3G is about bandwidth and high-speed data services
ITU World Radio Conference 2000 identified four bands for IMT-2000 (3G)
– 806-960 MHz
– 1710-2025 MHz
– 2110-2200 MHz
– 2500-2690 MHz
Each band has equal priority
Country administrations determine band sharing for their needs
3G is not spectrum-specific

In which bands do CDMA subscribers reside?
? 87% in 800 MHz and 1900 MHz bands
? Remaining 13% in 450 MHz, 1700 MHz and 2100 MHz bands
?Most CDMA2000 operators did not require new licenses from their governments
? Backwards compatibility enabled in-band migration to 3G

CDMA2000 is leading the evolution to high-speed data and multimedia services
Operators are rapidly deploying high-speed data technologies…
– 18 commercial 1xEV-DO networks; 18 more in deployment and 5 trials
– 14 million users today
– Nearly 130 million 1xEV users in four years; 40% of CDMA2000 subscribers
…to grow wireless data – With an average of 300-600 kbps up to 2.4
Mbps, CDMA2000 1xEV-DO offers the highest data rates of any commercial wireless network…
– …allowing operators to introduce advanced multimedia applications for consumer and enterprise customers
– Data is the fastest-growing business and, for some operators, will account for 50% of revenues in five years

CDMA in IndiaFlexible, technology-neutral policies adopted by the Indian government stimulated growth of wireless and greatly benefited consumers
– Wireless penetration increased four-fold • Number of wireless users grew from 10 million in 2002 to over 45 million users• Wireless surpassed fixed-line penetration• Wireless penetration will increase from 8.2% in 2005 to 14.5% by 2008*
– More consumers have access to lower-cost and broader range of wireless services• Tariffs dropped 74%• Wireless services expanded to previously underserved areas• Operators have introduced high-speed data services enabling hundreds of applications
and Internet access
CDMA has greatly contributed to success of wireless services in India– CDMA grew from 1 million in December 2002 to over 14 million users in December 2004, and
now accounts for 25% of the market – CDMA will account for over 30% of adds in 2005**– Reliance Infocomm has become the largest operator in India– CDMA operators are rapidly expanding and offering lower cost services in previously
underserved areas– With CDMA2000, operators are introducing advanced data services

Summary
?CDMA is the platform for 3G and will be the dominant wireless technology
? ITU identified a range of bands for IMT-2000 and all bands have equal priority
?Band-sharing plans permit CDMA2000 and WCDMA to co-exist in ITU identified bands
?CDMA2000 dominates the 3G industry with over 147 million subscribers
?CDMA2000 operators can choose from multiple frequency bands
?87% of CDMA2000 3G subscribers are at 800 and 1900 MHz
?Dual-band phones enable seamless global CDMA2000 roaming
? Indian consumers and economy stand to benefit from affordable wireless communications and advanced 3G services
? Indian government should continue flexible policies that allow competition of 3G CDMA technologies
