•Students will draw a basic shape and trace the shape onto chipboard

•Students will cut two of the shape, one slightly larger for the top of the box

•Students will cut .75” & 2” strips of chipboard for the sides of the box

Good

Placement Poor Placement

•Students will not waste materials; they will plan carefully

Page 3: 3D Project

•Students will form a thin line of glue around the edge of the larger shape (top)

•Students will wait 1 minute so the glue will be sticky, not wet

•Students will attach and hold the .75” strip to the larger shape (top)

•Students will hold the strips in place until the glue holds

Larger shape is the top of the box

Narrow strips get glued to the top of the box

Smaller shape is the bottom of the box

Wide strips get glued to the bottom of the box

Page 10: 3D Project

Cut two identical pieces because you will need a front and a back.

Page 11: 3D Project

Cut out all the negative spaces.

Using 1.5” or 2” wide strips, create spacers that fit exactly around the

edges of the negative spaces.

Tape them securely into place. Since this is the inside, the tape will

not be seen.

Good craftsmanship will prevent unsightly gaps in the piece.

Page 13: 3D Project

Once the negative spaces have had the spacer walls built around them, you will start to build a wall around the outer edge of the piece.

You will run a thin line of glue and let it set up for about one minute. This will help the glue work better than if you use really wet glue.

Make sure you use the same width strips you used for your

negative spaces. (All 1.5” or all 2”)

You will have to hold the strip into place until it feels like the glue is

holding. You will have to be patient and work carefully.

Good craftsmanship is the key to doing a good project.

Page 14: 3D Project

Here you see a student carefully holding the outer edge in place until the glue feels like it is holding.

Remember, it is important to wait at least one minute after applying glue before adding pieces. The glue should be tacky (sticky) and not wet.

You will tape after the glue is dry to strengthen the piece.

This is what the back of the project looks like.

Page 17: 3D Project

Here is a piece with the outer wall completed.

Page 18: 3D Project

The next to last assembly step is to run a thin line of glue along the top of all spacers and the outer wall. This needs to be done

all at once because then you set your top onto the piece.

Page 19: 3D Project

The assembly part of the project is now completed.

Page 20: 3D Project

The decorative part of the project begins with a coat of gesso to prepare the chipboard for painting just like you would with a canvas.

Do the styles and colors go with the word? Is there good craftsmanship in the project?

Page 24: 3D Project

This was a difficult piece but you can see that the craftsmanship is not very good. There are lots of gaps because

the top and the bottom were not cut out carefully and the student rushed

through the gluing process.

•You need to have patience for good craftsmanship!

•Rushing might get your project done but it won’t be finished!

This piece is difficult to read because the question mark is not separated from the word correctly with the paint.

•Plan your painting carefully!

If you have access to a computer with a paint program like Photoshop Elements, you can play around with your design even before you add one drop of paint. The computer is an excellent tool for design experimentation.

Step by step painting process. Sketch out the areas before you begin to paint.

Good craftsmanship in painting is another key element to a good project.
