3D Digital Restoration of Caligula
3D Scanning, Digital Modeling, and Digital Sculpting by Direct Dimensions, Inc.
Baltimore, Maryland, USAwww.directdimensions.com
September 2010, Direct Dimensions traveled to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia to 3D laser scan the Caligula statue. The scanning took a full long day using the Faro Platinum Arm, the Faro Laser Scanner, and PolyWorks software.
Onsite 3D Scanning – Data Acquisition
Raw Scan Data: each color represents a different scanned area
The 3D data captured was pieced together and converted into one single 3D digital model that serves as an extremely accurate digital archive of the priceless sculpture. This high resolution 3D model would become the starting point for a complete digital restoration of the sculpture.

Meeting of the Minds
Direct Dimensions’ Jason Page (2nd row far left) worked with a team of experts in art history, world heritage and conservation from the University of Virginia, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Art, Emory University, and the University of Florence. The team provided specific direction and reference materials which would guide the artistic digital restoration.
High resolution renderings were provided to the scholarly advisors who would direct the digital restoration process.

Digital Painting
Original Caligula without color
One of the goals of the project was to attempt to interpret how the sculpture may have been painted, and apply color in the virtual space. Scholars instructed us to use the Copenhagen Caligula example as an initial reference.
