Abstract
The Creative Director of Pixar Animation Studios, John Lasseter once declares:
"Every animation studio all begin with the short film". Producing a short animation is
an important process that each animator has to experience. There are awards given out
for animated short films in domestic and international film festivals, and it has
become an original art form in the movie industry. A short film is not a compressed
version of a feature film, but they are telling stories through images. The director
captures images through the camera, and making it become a medium of
communication between the director and the audience. Therefore, making good use of
camera language to convey the story concept and express the emotion has always
been the most important issue to directors.
Hence, this study attempted to exam the camera shots method for making an
animation shorts. First, the research explored the history and development of
animation shorts, and also the structure of storytelling. Second, the study delved into
the process of 3D animation shorts and the use of shots in motion pictures. Last, the
research selected Pixar Animation Studio's short films as the aim of this study. In this
research, the content analysis cames from Focus Group and Expert Interviews, and
explored how successful commercial animation directors convey their story through
the camera.
The result of this study shows that shots in 3D animation short films have
various characteristics, which are extremely diverse and showing in various scenarios
in the story, the use of the stage, the atmosphere are also extensive. The shots and
angle in 3D animation shorts is bias in order to comply with human experience.
Through shots close to human experience, the audience can quickly get into the world

of the story. Supplemented by an objective shot and stable shot, the audience can
appreciate in the pure viewing, and carefully arranged story by the director.
Furthermore, the characteristics of virtual cameras does not make shots tends brilliant
array of special effects. The shot in 3D animation short film is still used to support
character performing, and is a method of storytelling.
