 The LORD has taken away the judgments against you,he has turned away your enemies.

 The king of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst;

you shall fear disaster no more.On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem:Do not fear, O Zion;

do not let your hands grow weak.

 The LORD, your God, is in your midst,a warrior who gives victory;

he will rejoice over you with gladness,he will renew you in his love;

he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival.

I will remove disaster from you,so that you will not bear reproach for it.

I will deal with all your oppressorsat that time.

 And I will save the lameand gather the outcast,

and I will change their shame into praiseand renown in all the earth.

 At that time I will bring you home,at the time when I gather you;

for I will make you renowned and praisedamong all the peoples of the earth,

 All stand.

 The Holy Gospel Luke 3:7-18Priest  The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

People  Glory to you, Lord Christ. John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Donot begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God isable from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at theroot of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and

thrown into the fire." And the crowds asked him, "What then should we do?" In reply he said to them,"Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has foodmust do likewise." Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him,"Teacher, what should we do?" He said to them, "Collect no more than the amountprescribed for you." Soldiers also asked him, "And we, what should we do?" He said to

them, "Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages."

 As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their heartsconcerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I amnot worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spiritand fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."

So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people.

Priest  The Gospel of the Lord.People  Praise to you, Lord Christ.

 The Nicene Creed All standing, the people join in saying

 We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,maker of heaven and earth,of all that is, seen and unseen.

 We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven:by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,and his kingdom will have no end.

 We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified.He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

 We look for the resurrection of the dead,and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The people stand or kneel . Then the Celebrant continues

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when wehad fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent JesusChrist, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will,

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, andsaid, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance

of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them,and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shedfor you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for theremembrance of me.”

 Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People

Christ has died.Christ is risen.Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of yourSon, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him.
