Maths for work and life

Christine Penfold

Christine’s job was changing and she felt it was time for a change. She looked into a career path she had been interested in doing years ago which, due to family commitments, she was unable to pursue at the time.

Christine had gained GCSEs and a Level 2 Health and Social Care qualification but was advised she would need to update or refresh her maths and English to be considered for a position in a childcare or educational setting.

Christine decided to enrol on Level 2 Functional Skills courses for both maths and English to get her started on her new career path.

Christine said:I received fantastic support and guidance from friendly and professional tutors in a

more relaxed and comfortable adult environment. All tutors were willing to go the extra mile to [help you] get the results you want. An all-round positive experience.

Christine has since gained full time employment in a local private nursery and plans to continue her learning with a foundation degree and hopes to complete a full degree at some point in the future.

English for work and life

Xiu Qin Zheng

Xiu Qin lived and worked in China for many years before moving to England with her son. Finding it difficult to translate school letters and other important information, she decided to enrol on an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course to help to improve her communication skills.

Xiu Qin completed the course in self-study time with her son, where they helped each other with ‘homework’. Outside of class, she now feels confident when using public transport, shopping and attending appointments.

Xiu Qin said:With my new English skills I can speak

to more people, help my son, and now I am working, I can make plans to run my own dressmaking business in the future.

Xiu Qin has now moved onto Level 2 English in order to continue to improve her language skills and is hoping to start a maths course later this year.

If English is not your main language, and you would like to improve your speaking and listening skills, then ESOL is the course for you. Improving your English can help you to:

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Chelsea Henderson

Chelsea was at sixth form, working towards her AS Levels; she was struggling with the learning format and found exam situations difficult, preferring to learn in a more hands on way.

After sixth form, Chelsea went on to complete a Level 3 in Health & Social Care but, not being keen on the idea of attending university, she was unsure where to go next. An opportunity to become an apprentice with the Adult Learning & Skills Service presented itself; Chelsea was drawn to this idea because she could learn whilst she worked and gain a qualification whilst being paid.

Chelsea went on to complete her apprenticeship and gained full time employment with the service. She was keen to continue with her education, but as she was now working full time she wanted to continue to work while she trained.

The Adult Learning & Skills Service supported Chelsea by allowing her to enrol for vocational learning. Chelsea attends a NVQ Level 4 in Business Administration, which she will complete in March 2017. Once completed she hopes to continue on to a HNC in Business.

Chelsea said:Learning while I work has given me much more than a qualification. It has provided me

with the skills, knowledge and confidence to begin my career.

Designed to reflect the current and future needs of employers, these qualifications will benefit people with minimal experience of providing administrative assistance through to those who implement business support services and organisational change.

Combining both knowledge and competence skills the Level 2 Diploma focuses on enhanced skills requiring some professional responsibility and support. The Level 3 & 4 Diplomas develop a more comprehensive range of

business skills, including team supervision and project management, as well as organisational strategy and caters for those in managerial role.

The flexible structure allows learners a range of entry points to reach their career goal.

On completion learners will gain the skills and knowledge required to progress on to relevant administrative roles in employment or alternatively onto the next level.

Diplomas in Business Administration Qualifications Level 2 to Level 4

April Drew - Traineeship

Employability training can offer a great first step for people who lack the confidence to go straight into work.

For April Drew the benefits have been huge.

April had tried courses previously but never managed to finish them.

But when she started the traineeship with our Adult Learning & Skills Service she felt differently.

I suffered from anxiety for a long time and found courses very stressful because there were so many people on them and I worried so much, April explained.

This course was so different. It was a really small group, held locally, and our tutor Gail was so supportive. Going every week has been really good for me and helped me conquer my anxiety. It’s given me a positive outlook for my future career.

Lesley Clough - Community Parent Volunteer

Lesley was a stay at home mam to her two children. Lesley achieved a Degree in Health & Social Care in 2015 but struggled to find employment due to her lack of experience.

Lesley spent time volunteering for Durham County Council’s One Point Service in her local Children’s Centre. Her volunteer supervisor invited Lesley to take part in their Community Parent Volunteer (CPV) programme as part of the Get into…Education course provided by the Adult Learning & Skills Service. This programme helped Lesley to gain the valuable hands on experience required by employers, and will support her previous qualifications.

Lesley said,I enjoyed being at home with the kids, but after they reached an age when I wasn’t

needed as much, I felt a hole in my life. This was when I decided that I would put my years of being a mum to good use and help other families in the community.

I started my educational journey with a wish to be a midwife; however, after volunteering within my local Children’s Centre I realised I wanted to be a family worker. During her time on the CPV programme Lesley had the opportunity to apply for a family worker vacancy within the One Point Service. Lesley was successful in her application and has since started her new role as a family support outreach worker.
