On the program of this 38th edition:7 operas and oratorios

> The festival starts with Jérémie Rhorerwho will conduct, en primeur in Beaune, theamazing “The Magic Flute”, magic and fairy-likeopera that Mozart composed in the last months ofhis life and that, at every moment, fascinates andcarries us with Tamino and Pamina into the «Reallife», where Good and Evil, Day and Night, Loveand Hatred alternate in a perpetual dance.

> Christophe Rousset and his TalensLyriques continue their exploration and therediscovery of the work of Antonio Salieri, composer, contemporary although controversialof Mozart, one of the most important of his time,by performing his opera Armida, the one of hisgreatest successes, which they will give in worldpremiere. By associating the musical charactersof the French operas and Italian operas.

> With “Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria”, weopen a trilogy of Monteverdi’s operas led by anew guest conductor, Stéphane Fuget, one of hismost eminent performers. Monteverdi, at thepeak of his art, composes for this Ulysses severalof the most grandiose scenes of dramaticliterature, particular in Act 1, the lament ofPenelope who deplores the never ending waitingfor the return of Ulysses («Torna, torna, dehtorna, deh torna Ulisse «).

> William Christie and Robert Carsenoffer a program designed in the form of apasticcio, as it was so popular with the Baroqueaudience: a delicious patchwork of musical jewelsselected from the finest pages in the Europeanmusic repertoire. Seventeenth and eighteenthcenturies will be performed by two exceptionalsoloists’ mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre andcounter-tenor Jakub Jozef Orlinski.

> Ottavio Dantone conducts “Il Trionfodel Tempo e del Disinganno”, Haendel’s firstoratorio composed at the age of 22 in Romeduring his trip to Italy, and which already bearswitness to the extraordinary stylistic mastery of amusician freshly imported from multiplevirtuosities.

> Jean-Christophe Spinosi returns toVivaldi, a composer he had already beautifullyperformed in Orlando Furioso or Finda Ninfa. Heconducts L’Olimpiade, one of his most beautiful

compositions in which the constantly renewedmusical writing knows how to take advantage ofthe great variety of the dramatic situations.

> After he brilliantly conducted Les Indesgalantes last summer, the 24 year old ValentinTournet comes back to Beaune with his musicalensemble, La Chapelle harmonique, to performthe complete 6 Bach Motets, in German.Composed for the funeral ceremonies of highdignitaries, these motets are considered asBach’s most completed works and a climax inWestern sacred music. Thus the famousmasterpieces – Jesu meine Freude and Komm,Jesu, Komm – show a perfect balance incelebrating man’s farewell to his body and to theworld. They thoroughly lead to an astonishing andmoving performance.

> Leonardo Garcia Alarcon will conduct“The Magnificat”, one of Bach’s most famoussacred music. With a confusing wealth ofinvention, the Cantor demonstrates his sense ofimage, his desire to put musical expression in linewith the symbols of the libretto.

> After the sensational 9th Symphonylast summer, Jérémie Rhorer continues hisBeethoven cycle, with two new symphonies: theSymphony No. 3, called «Eroïca», which revisitswith sensitivity the heroic and martial style thathad invaded many European symphonies duringthe years 1790-1815 and the Symphony No. 5with its famous motif of Destiny knocking on thedoor, before irrigating all the musical material.

> 3 recitals: Mari Eriksmoen, awonderful Norwegian soprano, performs Mozart’sand Haendel’s opera arias around the greatheroines he has so magnified. Chiara Skerath, ayoung soprano, performs Gluck’s and Mozart’sarias. At the end of this 38th edition, AndreasScholl, fetish countertenor of the festival, since1994, offers us a program entirely focused onNeapolitan cantatas and arias of the 17th and18th centuries. After having conducted, Idomeneo, The Marriage of Figaro, Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, withthe phenomenal success that we know, Jérémie Rhorer conducts, in Beaune, The MagicFlute. The most popular and marvelous opera written by Mozart, the unrivalled magician. Theopera is based on a masterful libretto of Mozart’s friend Schikaneder, librettist but also initiatorof the role of Papageno. Created two months before his death, the Magic Flute is a magicalfairy tale dealing with the elevation by wisdom, love and goodness of the human being to ahigher morality corresponding to the ideas of the Age of Enlightenment, the Aufklärung ofrationalism. Since the beginning “The Magic Flute” was a real success. At the moment Mozartleaves one world to enter another: the music of the Magic Flute marks the beginning of the19th century.

Christophe Rousset and his Talens Lyriques continue their exploration and the rediscoveryof the work of Antonio Salieri, this time with Armida. This composer, contemporary ofMozart, thus finds a place more in line with his genius. Based on a libretto by MarcoColtellini, who also worked with Gluck, this drama set to music is inspired by the epic poemof the liberated Jerusalem of Tasso. Salieri associated the topic with the musical charactersof French operas and Italian operas: he works successfully with the melodic richness «àl’italienne» while putting it in the dramatic context of the French lyric tragedy. Like the«music dramas» characteristic of the eighteenth century, Armida is in three acts. But thedramatic structure is built around four characters and the acts are much shorter thanpreviously. The ouverture of the opera follows the precepts of Gluck and his librettistCalzabigi in the preface of Alceste (published two years earlier). It announces the dramaand facilitates action: by her enchantments, the magician Armida has already attracted anddetained many knights captivated by her beauty, when the Christian hero Rinaldo arrives...

Il Trionfo del Tempo e del DisingannoMoral Oratorio in 2 parts, created in Roma in 1707. Libretto by Cardinal Benedetto Pamphilij

ORCHESTRA ACCADEMIA BIZANTINAConductor : OTTAVIO DANTONE

Belleza Ana Maria Labin, sopranoPiacere Emmanuelle de Negri, sopranoDisinganno Delphine Galou, altoTempo Emiliano Gonzalez Toro, tenor

New production

Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno has a singular place in the history of what has become agenre in itself: the Haendelian oratorio, of which it is both alpha and omega. First oratorio of ayoung virtuoso of 22 years. The Beauty (Bellezza) who swore fidelity to Pleasure (Piacere), isreminded by Time (Tempo) and by Disillusionment, or rather the «Non-illusion», that is to saythe Truth (Disinganno). This oratorio reveals the extraordinary stylistic skills of a freshlyimported musician. First of all the vocal virtuosity, especially in the arias of Beauty andPleasure and the duo that brings them together. Orchestral virtuosity in the air of Pleasure,Come nembo che fugge, and in the swirling quartet, Voglio Tempo. And finally the virtuosity ofwriting, until the perfection of the quartet, one of the most prodigious ensembles of his time, exhilarating and whirling like a waltz. The aria which follows, rises perhaps still higher by theforce of a total simplicity; it has barely been changed and will become Rinaldo’s first Londonopera, one of the composer’s most famous works under the title Lascia ch’io pianga.

Magnificat BWV 243 in D majorComposed between 1728 and 1731 for the Feast of the Visitation of the Virgin

NAMUR CHOIRORCHESTRA CAPPELLA MEDITERRANEAConductor : LEONARO GARCIA ALARCON

Soprano Mariana FloresCountertenor Christopher LowreyTenor Valerio ContaldoBass Christian Immler

The Magnificat in its final form has become one of Bach’s most famous sacred works. Itopens and ends with two powerful choral movements between which the vocal andinstrumental soloists interact according to constantly varied formulas of a confusingabundance of invention. The Cantor shows its sense of the image, to align the musicalexpression with the symbols of the libretto. Among the most original ideas, we highlight thechoir singing on the words «omnes generationes» to evoke the multitude of humans acrossgenerations, the duet subtly balanced for alto and tenor with flutes in «Et misericordia», theimpressive choral fugue of «Fecit potentiam» that expresses the power of the Lord, thelimpid trio for 3 sopranos in «Suscepit Israel» and the first choir’s return to the topic for thefinal «Gloria Patri». Beyond these brilliant ideas, this festive work confirms Bach’s never-denied affection for the character of the Mother of Christ.

After the sensational 9th Symphony last summer, Jérémie Rhorer continues his Beethovencycle, with two new symphonies. Since 2006 his orchestra, the Cercle de l’Harmonie, foundedin 2005, has become one of the best orchestras performing on period instruments. Dedicated toBonaparte, presumed «hero» of the French Revolution, the Symphony No. 3, called «Eroica»,revisits sensitively the heroic and martial style that had invaded many European symphoniesduring the years 1790-1815. Praised in 1808 by the writer E.T.A. Hoffmann as «one of the mostmemorable works of our time”. Over the four movements, it is a real symphonic volcano thatexplodes on stage: a monument of power and fervor that we cannot escape from unscathed.

Chiara Skerath hassung many roles of Mozart’s operas such as Despina, Zerlina, Servilia, Cinna, Sifare orPamina. We are now greatly looking forward to her recital that she will focus on arias ofMozart and Gluck, with some arias of Hasse and Haydn. She will perform Mozart’s: «Achich fühl’s» (The Magic Flute), «Giunse alfin il momento ... deh Vieni» (Le Nozze di Figaro),«Lungi da te, mio bene» (Mitridate) or «S’altro che lagrime” (La clemenza di Tito); andGluck’s: «Se mai sensi spirarti sul volto», «Che fiero momento» or «Nocchier che inmezzo all’onde» (Orfeo e Euridice). We also have the great pleasure to see her in the roleof Megacle in the Vivaldi’s opera L’Olimpiade conducted by Jean-Christophe Spinosi onthe last weekend of the festival.

Récital Andreas Scholl, countertenor«Neapolitan arias and cantatas from 17th& 18th centuries»

ENSEMBLE 1700Flute and Conductor : DOROTHEE OBERLINGER

To close the 38th edition of the Festival, Andreas Scholl – one of its favourite and faithfulcountertenor – comes with an unusual and exclusive program based on Neapolitancantatas and arias of the XVIIe and XVIIIe centuries. He will be accompanied byEnsemble 1700 founded and directed by the virtuoso flute player, Dorothee Oberlinger. They will take us in the footsteps of young Handel, who travelled in Italy from 1706 to1710 and who discovered the vocal inventiveness of Scarlatti, of Leo and of Porpora,Farinelli’s master. Handel composed overthere an impressive number of masterpiecesdevoted to the musical capitals that were Florence, Roma, Venice and Napoli. Among thecantatas Andreas Scholl will sing in Beaune, let’s mention « Mi Palpita il Cor » by Handel, that the composer probably wrote in Napoli. This cantata became one of his most popular;its striking repeated notes are meant to figure the singer’s heartbeat. The aria «Torcere ilcorso all'onde», from Porpora’s Il Trionfo di Camilla and written for the famous castratoSenesino, is one of those exhilarating tunes that last for long once you’ve heard it.

Since 1983 Anne Blanchard, founderand artistic director of the Beaune InternationalBaroque Music Festival, has developed: apioneering artistic policy by rediscoveringBaroque opera on period instruments focusedon high quality productions, the reconstructionand interpretation of unpublished worksaccording to the latest musicological research;a conductor policy inviting most renownedconductors as well as the young generation; apolicy to identify new vocal talents byorganizing auditions in France and Europe; aproduction and coproduction policy by settingup a European broadcast network with otherfestivals and opera houses, a recording policyof its events with over 20 albums coproducedwith famous record companies.

The Beaune International BaroqueMusic Festival is regarded within the Europeanlyric festival movement as the referenceBaroque Festival (“the Salzburg of Baroquemusic” according to Diapason magazine). Ithas taken part in the “Baroque movementrevolution” by broadcasting Baroque music to anew audience in France and Europe. By focusing on European BaroqueOpera, and Italian opera seria dating formthe17th and 18th century, the Festival hashighly participated in the revival of Handel’soperas and oratorios in France, revealing to thepublic some missing works in the history ofmusic, and especially the following operas:Handel: Flavio (1990, Dir. René Jacobs),Scipione (1993, Dir. Christophe Rousset), Poro(1994, Dir. Fabio Biondi), Riccardo Primo(1995, Dir. Christophe Rousset), Admeto(1998, Dir. Christophe Rousset, Partenope(2005, Dir.

Its importance, its inspiration andexpressive effectiveness make DixitDominus to be considered as the mostfamous motet composed by Handelduring his stay in Rome. Composed in1707 it reveals Handel’s stunningcapacity to absorb the Italian style, whichhe reuses later for his English oratorios.Vivid and exultant, elegant anddemonstrative, the nine movements ofDixit Dominus contain Handel’s futurework. The explosive opening and endingchoirs don’t they sound like themonumental choirs in Israël en Egypte orMessie? How can you resist theirresistible verve of the writing, therhythmic energyand the

sumptuous choirs?
