C O L O U R C O N S U L T A T I O NDuring the consultation we must consider the clients’ personality – including suitably and their requirements; along side their natural colouring and haircut. Successful consultation will enable us to use the correct products and most suitable colour placement technique.
First establish why the client is colouring their hair, and what their priority is (e.g. covering white hair)
Why do clients colour their hair?• Add shine• Covering white hair• Add highlights• Boredom• Fashion accessory (seasonal, trends)• Like friends colour
Hair colour consultation• Skin tone• Eye colour• Natural hair depth• Soft, rich or intense result• Soft or dramatic technique• Favourite colours• Major colour in wardrobe• High or low maintenance [durability]
NATURAL DEPTH may be DARK (1-3), MEDIUM (5-6), or LIGHT (7-9)SKIN TONE may be described as COOL or WARMEYE COLOUR may be described as BROWN, BLUE (inc. Grey), or Green
Warm coloured clients suit: warm chestnut, intense reds, warm blondes and coppers.Cool coloured clients suit: natural browns, cool chestnuts, burgundy & plums, iridescent and cool ash blondes.

C A S E S T U D I E SCase studies give all colourists a logical, step by step formula when carrying out any colour application. In the same way that a clothes designer will follow a pattern, or a chef will follow a recipe, case studies are our detailed directions when colouring.
Introducing and explaining case studies early in anyone’s hairdressing career, will ensure that they can follow a precise guideline from early on. Once learnt, the principle of case studies will stay with them throughout their hairdressing career, and will make a perfect colour selection much easier.
So where do we start…There is a certain amount of information we need to gain prior to commencing the colour application. A full consultation will be required to enable us to establish what the client requires, and the effect they would like to achieve with colour. Once we have this information we will be able to decide the most suitable brand and product to achieve their desired results. We also need to assess the client’s hair in order to establish certain facts:
1 The first step is establishing the client’s natural base. First we decide is it: • Blonde • Brown • Black From there we can establish is it light or dark blonde, light or dark Brown? We now know the natural depth.
2 Is there any white hair, if so what % of white hair is present? Is it evenly spread throughout the hair or just in a certain area?
3 Shade required, also sometimes referred to as Target shade. Is the chosen colour on the same depth as natural hair? If not, we can either lighten or darken - this will also help in selecting the most suitable product to achieve the desired result. If going lighter than natural hair, how many levels of lightening are required? This will also give us a strong indication as to which product we will need to use and the correct oxidant strength.
4 Undercoat – if we are using permanent colour mixed with an oxidant, an undercoat will be achieved. It is important to know what this is, as it will influence the end colour result.
5 Any colour remaining on the length and ends of the hair?If so, what depth & reflect can you see on the remaining colour. This will enable us to establish if the previous colour is compatible with the new chosen colour, some preparation may be required on the lengths and ends before the desired shade can be applied. If we are going darker than previous colour, the undercoat will need to be replaced. If we are choosing to go lighter, then the previous colour will need to be removed. If there is no previous colour on the hair we will need to treat it is a virgin head application.
6 Condition – Is the hair sensitised or porous?
7 Once we have gathered all the facts, we can then decide on what product to use, and what the correct application technique will be.
All of the above is abbreviated in the following format:NB Natural Base SR Shade required L&E Level of depth and tone on the length and endsLL Levels of lighteningU/C UndercoatResult Shade required and the remaining UndercoatUse Product used to achieve the shade
