VOLUME 37, ISSUE 1 WINTER 2012 1 Annual conference overview and President’s report Our Annual Conference in Farmington was a huge success, in large part due to the hard work and organization of conference chair Nancy Espinosa and the staff and volunteers of the San Juan Archaeological Research Center and Library/Salmon Ruins Museum and the Farmington Museum. Many thanks to Larry Baker and Bart Wilsey. Dr. William H. Doelle’s keynote was informative and site-specific with regard to Four Corners cultures and archaeology. Nuggets taken away from his talk were the philanthropic mantra “give until it feels good,” and his optimistic point of view: “maintain an ideology of abundance.” The sessions were well presented and attended. I want to thank all of our speakers: Candace Tangorra Matelic, Ph.D.; Carol Kennis Lopez; Rose T. Diaz, Ph.D.; Mary Lyle; Randy Forrester; Dale Anderson; Brenda Martin, Ph.D.; Marilyn Fletcher; Jeanne Brako; Lauren Addario; Caroline Brooks; Rianne Trujillo; Melissa Marquez; Angelo Mitchell; Gabriel Garcia; Deanna Threadgill and Martha McCaffrey; Kate Nelson; Michael Stevenson, Ph.D.; Craig Newbill, Ph.D.; Larry Baker; Lauren Bloemsma; Daniel Goodman; Kate Ware; Doug Patinka; Kathryn A. Flynn; M. Susan Barger, Ph.D.; Cynthia Anne Bettison, Ph.D.; Heather McClenahan; Selena Connealy; Stanley Cohen, Ph.D.; and Cynthia Baughman. Congratulations to the Photo Archives of the Palace of the Governors for taking home the prestigious Edgar L. Hewett Award for Excellence. “The staff of the Photo Archives has worked diligently to make the state’s visual record readily available to people in any part of the state and even the world,” said Dr. Frances Levine, Director of the New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors. “These resources will prove especially valuable as we prepare to enter our Centennial year as a state. We’re honored by this award.” Albuquerque will host our 2012 Centennial conference from November 7-10. Las Cruces will host in 2013 and Carlsbad in 2014. I’d like to thank the following outgoing board members for the service they have provided to our Association over the years: Selena Connealy, First Vice President; Tony Thibodeau, MPMA Representative; Pat Price, Archivist; and Tish Morris, Education Committee Representative. Pasty Jackson-Christopher, Director of the Carlsbad Museum and Art Center, was elected as First Vice President. Our MPMA Representative is Daniel Goodman, Curator of Collections, El Rancho de las Golondrinas. We are searching for someone to fill Pat’s and Tish’s shoes, so if you are interested in either of these appointed positions, please contact me. A complete list of your 2012 board is included in this issue. — Laurie J. Rufe, President The Hotel Albuquerque, on the edge of Old Town, will host the 2012 NMAM Annual Conference.

Award for Fort Stanton Cave Study Project

The Fort Stanton Cave Study Project has been honored by the Conservation Lands Foundation with its first-ever Conservation Leadership Award. The award recognizes the outstanding efforts of the FSCSP, which studies and protects the complex underground Fort Stanton Cave system. Scott Jones, Southwest Program Director of the Conservation Lands Foundation, said, “The work of the members and volunteers of the Fort Stanton Cave Study Project continues to reveal new scientific discoveries. Their work reminds us how much we still have to learn and why it is so important to protect critical areas like the

Snowy River Cave and Fort Stanton in the National Conservation Lands.”

NMAM member Lynda Sánchez is on the board of the FSCSP, and she says, “This recognition of the FSCSP is special for me because I have seen how much the cavers, many of whom are scientists and retired educators, have given of themselves over more than four decades. This ‘brain trust’

shows what a devoted group of men and women can accomplish and I am honored to be part of that organization.” Sánchez adds that “this year is the tenth anniversary of the discovery of Snowy River Passage. This discovery is one of the main reasons that the BLM National Cave Conservation Area was set aside for protection. The 25,000 acres of BLM that include the historic Fort Stanton Cave, also surround and protect Fort Stanton State Monument so we are most fortunate to have that mantle of protection for both sites.” The Lincoln County Commission recently honored the FSCSP with a proclamation recog-nizing the discovery and break through into Snowy River Passage.

More on the history and accomplishments of the FSCSP, including a video on the discovery of the Snowy River Passage, is at www.fscsp.org. Sánchez’s comprehensive book, Fort Stanton: An Illustrated History, Legacy of Honor, Tradition of Healing, includes cave exploration and mapping from the 1850’s by Fort Stanton soldiers through the modern era of caving and research represented by FSCSP.

Grants and Awards History Library Wins Grant to Catalog Extensive Map Collection

The Fray Angélico Chávez History Library at the New Mexico History Museum has won a $179,600 grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources to catalog its map collection, a three-year effort that will help researchers and the public find and make use of its hidden jewels. The council’s award program, Cataloging Hidden Special Collections and Archives, seeks to increase awareness of collections of substantial intellectual value that are unknown and inaccessible to scholars. CLIR administers this national effort with the support of generous funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The History Library’s map collection consists of nearly 6,000 maps on New Mexico and the Southwest region that provide valuable historical information on topics as diverse as early Spanish exploration, American settlement in the Southwest, famous roads like the Camino Real and the Santa Fe Trail, water rights, the development of cities and counties, and more. The materials include blueprint railway maps, surveyors' maps for Western expansion, topographical maps, and the hand-drawn, 18th-century manuscript maps of Bernardo de Miera y Pacheo.

With the grant, the library – currently a two-person operation – can hire a full-time professional librarian and two part-time assistants. With web-searchable records of the library’s holdings, available both locally in the library's catalog and on the international database WorldCat, the maps will be discoverable to an audience both near and far. (The grant, however, will not pay the further expenses of digitizing the materials; to see the maps, people will have to come to the library.)

The Fray Angélico Chávez History Library is a non-circulating, closed-stack research library that preserves historical materials documenting the history of the state, the Southwest, and Meso-America from pre-European contact to the present. The library is open to the public Tuesday through Friday, 1-5 pm (closed on major holidays).

Lucy Lippard Honored for Museum of New Mexico Press Book

Lucy Lippard has won the 2011 Caroline Bancroft History Prize for her book Down Country: The Tano of the Galisteo Basin, 1250-1782, published by the Museum of New Mexico Press. The Denver Public Library sponsors the prestigious award. The book also received the Fray Francisco Anastasio Dominguez Award for historic survey and research from the Historical Society of New Mexico.

Museum Professional from Texas Named Executive Director of Natural History MuseumA veteran museum professional with more than 25 years of experience in various management positions at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History has been named the new executive director for the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science. Charles Walter assumed his new position in Albuquerque on October 24.

“Charlie brings to New Mexico an extensive background in museum operations, exhibit development, educational programming, visitor services and fundraising—all of which make him an outstanding leader for our state’s most visited museum,” said Cultural Affairs Department Secretary Veronica Gonzales.

Walter was most recently the Executive Vice President of Programs for the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, an institution that he joined in 1986 as its Visitor Services Manager. He has also served the museum as its chief operating officer from 2004–2009 and as an interim director in 2003-2004. Walter holds a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Science with an emphasis in Museum Science from Texas A&M University and an MBA from the University of North Texas.

“During the interview process, I was truly taken by the quality of the facili-ties, programs, exhibits, collections and staff at this museum,” said Walter. “I am thrilled at the opportunity to become a part of this remarkable institution. I believe that museums are a vital part of strong communities and are critical to the learning process, Our exhibits and programs provide a spark that often leads to a lifetime of learning.”

New Mexico’s most visited museum (with about 200,000 visitors per year) opened its doors on Mountain Road near Old Town in Albuquerque in January 1986. The museum’s newest exhibition, Emergence, a new view of life’s origins, opened in July.

Put Local History on the Map

WhatWasThere.com

During the 2011 NMAM Tech Showcase at the Annual Conference in Farmington, AmeriCorps intern Rianne Trujillo demoed the website WhatWasThere.com.

Created by Enlighten Ventures in Ann Arbor, Michigan, WhatWasThere is a platform known for putting history in its place. By using Google Maps to tie historical photos to their location, users are able to see how current places appeared in the past.

WhatWasThere states that "if enough people upload enough photo-graphs in enough places, together we will weave together a photographic history of the world (or at least any place covered by Google Maps)."

In the Centennial year, it is proposed that museums and organiza-tions across the state, especially those with access to photo archives, take advantage of this platform in order to weave together a photographic history of New Mexico. It is an innovative tool for sharing and exploring history. Currently, WhatWasThere is a web based and iOS application, with an Android application in the works.

In order to upload photos, you may register with an email address for an account, at no cost. If you have any questions regarding the process of setting up an account and learning how to upload photos, you may contact Rianne Trujillo via [email protected].

New Mexico’s Small Museums, A Links Series

The New Mexico Veterans’ Memorial, Museum & Conference CenterLast summer I enjoyed the privilege of visiting a new-to-me New Mexico cultural site in Albuquerque. Board of Governors Chair Sara Gist-Bernasconi provided an informative and highly moving tour of the New Mexico Veterans Memorial.

New Mexico’s history reverberates with the names of famous military events and personalities. The Veterans' Memorial, amphitheater, and newly opened museum evoke memories for all veterans—from the moment of their deci-sion to serve until their return home. The twenty-five acre site includes the Fallen Friend area and the Homecoming area, designed to represent rural New Mexico with orchards, lavender fields, ramadas, and mountains. Powerful sculptures, both abstract and represen-tational, memorialize the experiences of veterans and invite contemplation.

The New Mexico Veterans' Memorial is located at 1100 Louisiana Blvd. SE, near the Gibson gate to Kirtland Air Force Base. Visitors are welcome Fridays through Mondays from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Admission is free. Visit the website at www.nmvetsmemorial.org.
