Gas Exchange! When oxygen from the environment is
exchanged with carbon dioxide from the body
! 2 requirements! ! a moist, clean membrane ! a structure with a large surface area
Gas Exchange in the Lungs (O2 and CO2)! Occurs in air sacs called alveoli ! Oxygen in lungs moves into capillaries (blood) ! carbon dioxide from the blood into the alveoli
How has bigger lungsMales or females?Athletes or non-athletes?
Athletic female or non-athletic male?
Respiration! Breathing: Muscular action that moves gases in and
out of the lungs
! Respiration: Using O2 gas along with sugar in food to produce energy in the cells mitochondria
Oxygen + sugar (glucose) ! carbon dioxide + water + energy
O2 + C6H12O6 ! CO2 + H2O + Energy
Respiratory SystemStructure Function
Pharynx Part of digestive and respiratory system
Larynx Voice box (Adam’s apple) Contains vocal cords
Trachea wind pipe -cleans the air
Respiratory SystemStructure Function
Bronchi Conduct air into each lungs
Bronchioles branches off bronchi sends to alveoli
Respiratory SystemStructure Function
Alveolus (alveoli)
tiny sac for gas exchange exchange
Capillaries surround alveolus (where gases enters the blood)
Respiratory SystemStructure Function
Lung Made up of alveoli, bronchioles and capillaries
Diaphragm Muscle that aids in inhalation and exhalation
