You have probably heard the phrase “sola scriptura,” which is used by many Protestant religions to describe their authority as coming from Scripture alone. Martin Luther originally defined the doctrine of using Scripture as the sole source of theological authority in the midst of frustrations with things happening within the Church’s hierarchy during the Protestant Reforma on. To this day, the source of authority remains one of the defining differences between the Catholic faith and many other Chris an denomina ons. Offering a Mass Inten on The custom of reques ng a priest to offer the Mass for a specific inten on, even when one cannot be physically present at the Mass, is a longstanding tradition in the Church. This is because the Church considers the Mass as the greatest possible prayer of intercession, insofar as it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father by making present the paschal mystery of his death and resurrec on. To request a Mass offering for the inten ons of a living person or for the repose of the soul of a deceased person, please feel free to contact the Parish Office. For more information and to make the request electronically (with optional payment by credit card) please visit corpuschristiphx.org/mass-inten on.

Please consider Online Giving! Safe • Simple • Secure

Our parish was founded 35 years ago, and we want it to continue strong in its mission to lead people closer to Jesus for the next 35 years and beyond! There has never been a bigger need, or better reasons, to use Online Giving to support our parish. To get started, please click the ONLINE GIVING button at corpuschristiphx.org and follow the simple instructions for repeat electronic giving to the Sunday Collection.

Thank you for your continued support & generosity!

unified and dependent on one another for revealing who God is and how He has worked throughout human history. The Catechism quotes an ancient Chris an saying attributed to St. Augustine to describe the unity of the two: “the New Testament lies hidden in the Old and the Old Testament is unveiled in the New” (CCC #129). It’s likely that you have heard someone say something along the lines of, “Catholics don’t read/study the Bible.” These days there are many, many Catholic-based Scripture studies and we host some excellent ones here at our very own parish. However, even Catholics who never pick up a Bible are s ll getting a healthy dose of Scripture if they are attending Sunday Mass every week. In our Mass, there are always two readings taken straight from Scripture – one from the Old and one from the New. Between those is a Psalm and following the second reading, there is always an excerpt from one of the Gospels. In addi on, many of the prayers prayed during Mass are taken directly from Scripture. The readings are chosen by the teaching authority of the Church, allowing for two things to take place. One, every Catholic in the world is reading and hearing the same Scripture on the same day which unites us all under God’s Word. Secondly, if we con nue to a end Mass, we will hear nearly the en re Bible read aloud, and we can con nue hearing it in its en rety throughout our lives. So, what is the problem with using the Word of God as our only source of authority if it is so revered? The problem is us. Man is so fallible, that when left to his own devices, he will eventually lose sight of, or even destroy, the intended message contained within Scripture. You’ve seen it before, where someone misuses or twists a scripture passage, or you’ve seen things taken out of context while other pieces are deliberately le out or ignored because it does not fit within the argument. Knowing how fallible we are, God built in two other forms of authority into His Church in order to safeguard His Word.

Tradition Our second source of authority is Tradition. Tradition

is how we describe the way in which things have been understood throughout the history of Christianity, star ng with the Apostles, and being handed down to today. The Apostles were closest to Christ and had very in mate knowledge of Him and His teachings.

Not every single detail was recorded in Scripture, though. As they spread throughout the world, teaching and preaching, a new generation of Christians formed and took on the same understanding and practices that were handed down to them. We get our interpretation and understanding of what is contained in Scripture from those Christians who came before us, going all the way to the beginning with Jesus and His apostles. We also consider the early Church Fathers when we are looking to Tradi on. Chris ans in the very earliest centuries did not have to suffer the distor ons that arose over long periods of me, and thankfully, they’ve le us an abundance of wri ngs to relay their understanding of faith to us. We can always turn to the early Church Fathers whenever we have a ques on about how or why things are done. Another point highly worthy of note regarding the relationship between Scripture and Tradition is that Tradition actually preceded Scripture. The Gospels and the epistles did not magically appear the second Jesus was resurrected. It took years for things to be written down and compiled, and the official canon of the Bible was not established un l 382 AD at the Council of Rome. Therefore, the Apostles did not have New Testament Scripture from which to quote, interpret, and preach. They had their memories and their experiences to use as reference. Thus, in order to begin the work of the Church, namely to evangelize and convert others, it was necessary that they start from the authority of Tradi on. So, if Christianity began with the handing down of Tradition before Scripture, how can others now say that “sola scriptura” is the only way?

Magisterium

Our final source of authority is the Magisterium, which is the teaching authority of the Church as an ins tu on created by Jesus Christ and protected by the Holy Spirit. We see the Magisterium u lized for the very first me in the Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 15, as we read about the Council of Jerusalem. There was a disagreement among believers on whether or not Gentiles should be circumcised upon their

conversion. Jesus had not given explicit instruction on the ma er, nor was there Scripture beyond the Old Testament to direct them, so some understood it to be done one way, while others understood it another way. The Apostles, who we understand to be the first bishops, got together to discuss the issue. After debating different points of view and reviewing the Scripture they had, they came to an agreement and dra ed a decree on official Church teaching. Shortly before this council was the feast of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Church, protec ng her work of salva on which, no doubt, included these first efforts of the Magisterium. The Apostles then distributed the decree to all of the other fac ons of the Christian Church. We still see this practiced today,

as we have throughout all of Church history. As issues and ques ons have come up in the Church regarding what we should do, how we should prac ce, what we should believe, and what Jesus intended – our bishops, cardinals, and popes have gathered under the protection of the Holy Spirit to discuss and debate God’s will for His Church under the guidance of Sacred Scripture. Then decrees are dra ed and then promulgated by the Pope, enabling believers to know the official teaching on the issue. This is how the doctrine and dogmas have been developed and revealed to us over the years. Believing that the Magisterium (the teaching authority and not simply the men themselves) is protected by the Holy Spirit, believers are called to give their assent to the Church teaching, whether we fully understand it or not, because it has been determined to be true and God’s will.

Think of our three sources of authority as a three-

legged stool. No single source is more important than any other and they all work together in a cohesive and uni ve way. We should not cling to our pope more than our Scripture, nor do we ignore the beautiful smells and bells of liturgy that have been handed on to us in order to study Scripture day and night. Our Faith is dependent on all three, equally and simultaneously, which have been given to us as a gift of insurance from God, protec ng the truth from our faulty human natures forever.

First Vatican Council, circa 1870, artist unknown

New opportunities to give of yourself with your time and talents! We are looking for new council members!

First, THANK YOU so much to all the current and previous Pastoral Council and Finance Council members. These two groups have played vital roles in making our parish what it is today! Your me, given in service to our parish, is so greatly appreciated!

We love all our council members and it is always sad when one of his or her terms comes due! Alas, things must change, and new perspec ves are needed to keep our parish growing! We have several member terms coming due, so we are looking for parishioners who are interested in serving on one of these councils!

The Pastoral Council meets with the pastor once a month to discuss, prayerfully discern, and provide advice on various topics regarding the parish. They also help to promote communica on, understanding, and resolu on among parish ministries, organiza ons, and parishioners.

The Finance Council meets with the pastor every other month to discuss and provide advice on all parish matters related to finance. A finance-related background (accounting, management, law, business, etc.) is helpful!

If you are a parishioner in full communion with the Catholic Church and are endowed with an overall knowledge of parish life and sensi vity to pastoral values, please prayerfully consider applying!

If prayer has led you to applying, please write a short le er or email (just one or two paragraphs is fine) to Fr. Rey (administrator@corpuschris phx.org) describing yourself, how you have been involved in the parish, and why you are interested in serving the parish, and our Lord, in this way.

Thank you!

T I A Your Feedback is Needed

Return of Our Monthly Speaker Programs Beginning September 2 at 6:30pm, we will resume our monthly speaker program “virtually.” As much as we’d all like to be back together in the Parish Center drinking coffee, ea ng snacks, and enjoying each other’s company, I’m afraid the virus is s ll preven ng that for now. As a result, our presenta on will be going virtual/on-line. Trust me, (Dcn. Dennis speaking here) as technologically challenged as I am, the process is very easy. Shortly before Sept. 2, a link and instructions will be sent out. We will also send the link out the day-of as a reminder. Our guest will be Mike Phelan, Director of Marriage and Respect Life for the Diocese of Phoenix speaking on: Three Virtues Needing Rebirth in the Catholic Man’s Heart: Magnanimity, Humility and Obedience.

Book Club Un l we can gather safely on a weekly basis, we have decided to act on the suggestion of starting a book club. We’ll keep it short and sweet. Participants will be asked to purchase a book, read approximately two chapters of it each week, and join a weekly virtual mee ng to discuss what was read. We will begin with Salva on: What Every Catholic Should Know, by Michael Patrick Barber and have our first discussion on Wed. Sept. 9 at 6:30pm.

ACTION NEEDED:

If you are interested in par cipa ng, please email either [email protected] or [email protected] to give us an accurate count of those who can commit to joining us. There are ten chapters to this book, so our total weeks in study and dialogue will be five weeks. As we get close to finishing, we will announce a new book and send out another invita on to our larger group.

Knights of Columbus Blood Drive Results

A “Thank You!” Shout-0ut

The Blood Drive on July 26, 2020, was an extraordinary success with 57 successful dona ons. Five of them were Power Red dona ons.

Power Red dona ons allow a person to safely donate two units of red blood cells during one dona on. This process separates the red blood cells from the other blood components, then carefully and comfortably returns plasma and platelets to the donor.

The 57 dona ons compare with 31 units donated on March 29, 2020. On December 8, 2019, 39 units were given. Last year, on July 28, 2019, 38 units were collected.

The Knights of Columbus Corpus Chris Council 10062 and Gary Kwapisziski, our Blood Drive Chairman, extend a hear elt “Thank you!” to everyone who made a contribu on to this worthy cause.
