CUB SCOUT PROGRAM CUB SCOUT PACK

THIS IS CUB SCOUTS

CUB SCOUTS ARE AWESOME.History. Tradition. Adventure. It’s like play with a purpose, but better. Boys in first thru fifth grade do their best and have fun doing it!

Your son is a member of a den which:

• Has five to nine boys

• Meets 2-3 times each month in den meetings

• Is led by a Den Leader (usually a parent), who is assisted by an assistant Den Leader

Includes games, sports, crafts, hands on learning and periodic field trips.

1DO YOUR BEST.That’s the Cub Scout motto. Kids are pretty amazed at what they can achieve when they try, but we knew they could do it all along.

2A SCOUT IS CLEAN,

BUT ISN’T AFRAID

TO GET DIRTY.

Cub Scouts are active. They get elbows deep in

projects and games. That’s as it should be.

3CUB SCOUTS LEARN CHARACTER.

There’s a lot of play, but we do other things, too. Important things.

4MOSTLY, THIS IS ABOUT HAVING FUN.Cub Scouts get a chance to try things and see places that they normally wouldn’t.

Always a good thing.

5CUB SCOUTS IS FUN,

BUT IT’S NOT ALWAYS EASY.

The program is meant to challenge kids to do

their best. They’ll learn a lot about

themselves along the way.

BOBCATAll boys earn the Bobcat badge first, by learning the Scout Oath and Law, handshake, salute, sign, motto, tell what they mean and complete the exercises in the Youth Protection Parent Guide. After receiving the Bobcat badge, the boys work on requirements based on their grade level.

TIGERThe Tiger badge is earned after completing each of the 6 Tiger Required Adventures with your den or Family, completing one Tiger elective adventure of your den or family’s choosing, and complete the exercises in the Youth Protection Parent Guide.

WOLFA Cub Scout who has completed first grade (or is age 8), works to complete the 6 Wolf Required Adventures with your den or family, complete one Wolf elective adventure, and complete the exercises in the Youth Protection Parent Guide, to earn the Wolf badge. After he earns his Wolf badge, a boy may work on electives in different interest areas until he is old enough to begin work on the Bear badge.

BEAR

A Cub Scout who has completed second grade (or is age 9), works to complete the 6 Bear Required Adventures with your den or family, complete one Bear elective adventure, and complete the exercises in the Youth Protection Parent Guide. After he earns his Bear badge, a boy may work on electives in different interest areas until he is old enough to become a Webelos Scout.

WEBELOS

When a Cub Scout has completed the third grade (or becomes 10 years old), he transfers to a Webelos den. Led by an adult Webelos leader, the boy works on requirements for the Webelos badge he must be active for at least 3 months, work on the 5 required adventures, complete 2 elective adventures, and complete the exercises in the Youth Protection Parent Guide. The Arrow of Light – has similar requirements and is the highest award in Cub Scouting.

Camping and outdoor programs are an important part of the 18 month Webelos program. In February of a Webelos 5th grade year, he graduates from Cub Scouting into the adventure of Boy Scouting at an impressive graduation ceremony. Every boy deserves an opportunity to be a Boy Scout.

THE BASICS FOR A NEW SCOUT

| NEW SCOUT BASIC NEEDS

BOYS’ LIFE RECOMMENDEDBoys’ Life Magazine has been around almost as long as boys have been Scouts. It is the only magazine especially designed for the Scout.

With features such as camping around the world and hiking, hobbies such as model cars and boat building, bicycling, fishing and nature, and articles on current Scouting, sporting and new events, Boys’ Life has just about everything to offer your son.

Make sure on your application you mark the Boys’ Life square and put your correct mailing address. In approximately 2 to 3 months, your Scout will receive his first issue delivered directly to his home. This is one step you can take to make sure your son will receive a full year of great Scouting.

HOW TO GET STARTED… BASIC NEEDSContrary to what your son may tell you, the first thing he will need to get started is not a uniform, but a book. The books in Cub Scouting are related to his age.

A first-grader will need the Tiger Cub Book, a second-grader will need a Wolf Book, a third-grader needs a Bear Book, and a fourth or fifth grader will need the Webelos Book.

These books contain the basics he will need for the coming year, especially the requirements for that particular advancement award.

NEW SCOUT BASIC NEEDS |

CUB SCOUT UNIFORMDon’t get the idea that uniforms aren’t important, they are. After going through your son’s book with him you’ll probably have a good idea how serious a Cub Scout he will be. The uniform is an important part of the program and it represents an investment on your part. Our uniforms are of very high quality and, in most cases, will last for several years. So, be sure to buy one large enough for him to grow into.

If you can find an ‘experienced’ uniform in good shape, be sure to get it. Many of these ‘experienced’ uniforms will be justlike new and will be all he needs at a very low cost.

Most new Cub Scouts will have to buy a uniform and the Council Scout Shop is the official distributor of BSA uniforms and equipment. It is located in the Council Service Center on the first floor at .

Cub Scouts don’t require much more than this, but in Boy Scouts he will need to acquire personal camping gear for their many outings. The boys are encouraged to wear their uniforms to school on the day of their Scouting meetings. The Cub Scouts especially enjoy this, and the uniform serves as school clothing one day a week.
