SAINT MARY ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH BEDFORD, OH

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL In this Sunday’s Gospel, we find that Jesus “...went around all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and cur-ing every disease and illness among the people.” This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to proclaim the good news of the kingdom to the poor, by assisting many families with food, utilities, etc.

Please remember in your prayers the repose of the souls of Jackie Vlk-Maire, Lena Simione and Pete Scimone who were buried from our Church this past week. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in the arms of Jesus and Mary

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 26, 2020

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Dear Parishioners, This Saturday, January 25th, we celebrate a some-what unusual feast. Normally on a feast day we cel-ebrate a saint or an event in the life of our Lord or the Blessed Mother. But this Saturday we celebrate the Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle. The Solem-nity of St. Peter and St. Paul is celebrated on June 29th, but this Saturday we celebrate the seminal event in the life of Saul (St. Paul). The conversion experience of St. Paul was recorded in Chapter 9 of the “Acts of the Apostles”: “Now Saul, still breath-ing murderous threats against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for let-ters to the synagogues in Damascus, that, if he should find any men or women who belonged to the Way, he might bring them back to Jerusalem in chains. On his journey, as he was nearing Damas-cus, a light from the sky suddenly flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ He said, ‘Who are you, sir?’ The reply came, ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. Now get up and go into the city and you will be told what you must do (Acts 9: 1-6).’” We know from the “Acts of the Apostles” that a temporarily blinded Saul went to Damascus and visited Ananias who laid hands on Saul and re-stored his sight. After recovering his sight, Saul was baptized, and he began to proclaim Jesus as the Son of God in the synagogues of Damascus. When the Jews of Damascus plotted to kill Saul, he escaped during the night by being let down in a basket through a hole in the wall. Then he went to Jerusa-lem to meet the other disciples. According to a foot-note in the New American Bible on Acts 13:9, there is no reason to believe that his name was changed from Saul to Paul upon his conversion. The use of a double name, one Semitic (Saul), and the other Greco-Roman (Paul) was well attested at that time. Thirteen letters were attributed to St. Paul in the New Testament, and many of these are remarkably autobiographical. St. Paul’s conversion tells us that even the worst of sinners can be-come saints. That should give all of us hope! Christ’s peace, Father Joe

CATHOLIC CHARITIES ANNUAL APPEAL Faces of Hope. Though we are many, we are one in Christ. Many parishioners received letters in January, inviting their support of the Annual Appeal. Your sup-port of the 2020 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal will help us serve those individuals who are most in need and most vulnerable. From Matthew’s Gospel: Whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me. When we feed the hungry, take care of the sick, and welcome the stranger, we are also serving Jesus himself. We appreciate your donation and will take special care to use it wisely in providing essential pro-grams and services to people in need throughout all eight counties of the Diocese of Cleveland. We invite you to view stories of inspiration online at www.catholiccommunity.org/ 2020Appeal. To make a donation today, text CCHOPE to 41444 or visit CatholicCommunity.org/Donate. We appreciate your donation. HELP NEEDED We need one person to help vacuum God's house. You will vacuum with another person once a month and at a time that is best for your schedule. It is usually the first week of the month. Please contact Ginny Mone at 440-232-6415 BLESSING OF THROATS There will be a Blessing of Throats for the Feast of St. Blaise during all weekend masses at both Our Lady of Hope and Saint Mary next weekend, February 1st & 2nd. The throat blessing will take place after the gen-eral intercessions. VAPING AND THE EFFECTS Vaping—The action of inhaling and exhaling the vapor produced by an electronic cigarette or simi-lar device: there is concern that young people may take up vaping as a less harmful alternative to smoking. Please join us on Tuesday, February 11th at 6:30 p.m. at St. Monica Church in St. Bene-dict School Cafeteria, 13623 Rockside Road, Gar-field Hts. The presenter is Dr. Humberto Choi who will speak about Vaping and the effects, dangers and health risks that this entails. Call 216-662-8685 to register.
