Martyrdom of John the Baptist
The Church, having celebrated the earthly birthday of St. John the
Baptist on June 24, today honors the anniversary of his martyrdom.
Besides our Lord and our Lady, St. John the Baptist is the only one
whose birth and death are thus celebrated. Today's Gospel relates the
circumstances of his execution. He had the courage to blame Herod to
his face for the scandal of his illegal union with his sister-in-law
Herodias, whose husband was still alive. Herodias contrived to make
Herod imprison him and took advantage of an unexpected
opportunity to obtain through her daughter Salome the beheading of
the saint.
There is no doubt that blessed John suffered imprisonment and chains as a witness to our
Redeemer, whose forerunner he was, and gave his life for him. His persecutor had demanded not
that he should deny Christ, but only that he should keep silent about the truth. Nevertheless, he died
for Christ. Does Christ not say: "I am the truth"? Therefore, because John shed his blood for the
truth, he surely died for Christ.
Through his birth, preaching and baptizing, he bore witness to the coming birth, preaching and
baptism of Christ, and by his own suffering he showed that Christ also would suffer. Such was the
quality and strength of the man who accepted the end of this present life by shedding his blood after
the long imprisonment. He preached the freedom of heavenly peace, yet was thrown into irons by
ungodly men. He was locked away in the darkness of prison, though he came bearing witness to the
Light of life and deserved to be called a bright and shining lamp by that Light itself, which is Christ.
Prayer
O God, who willed that Saint John the Baptist should go ahead of your Son both in his birth and in his death, grant that, as he died a Martyr for truth and justice, we, too, may fight hard for the confession of what you teach. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Corpus Christi Monastery is the oldest Dominican monastery in the United States, a 125 year old branch of the first monastery of nuns founded by St. Dominic de Guzman in Prouilhe, France, in 1206.
Our vocation places us In Medio Ecclesiae, in the heart of the Church, the heart of the Order. Such was the desire of St. Dominic in order to emphasize in a radical way the grace of contemplation, which is the very source of the itinerant apostolic
life begun by him. Rooted in God’s Word through prayer, study, community life and hospitality, we partake of the universal mission of our Order, receiving in the inmost sanctuary of compassion the needs of the entire human family.

In life we face many important choices, and today’s readings illustrate some of them. In the Letter to the Ephesians, Paul speaks about the foundational choice man and woman make when they commit themselves totally to each other: “and the two shall become one flesh.” In their self sacrificing love for each other in marriage, we glimpse the depths of Christ’s self-sacrificing love for the Church. The Book of Joshua presents the foundational choice the people of Israel face on entering the Promised Land: “Decide today whom you will serve, the gods your fathers served beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites?” Memories of God’s faithful love, mercy, and care influence their decision. “Therefore, we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.” The people renew themselves to the covenant relationship with God. At the conclusion to the Bread of Life discourse, Jesus asks his followers to make their foundational choice for or against him. So many were shocked by Jesus’ words and walked away when he identified himself as the “Bread that came down from heaven” and then went further by adding “unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood you have no life in you.” So Jesus asked his own disciples if they too wished to leave. As usual, Peter replies on behalf of the others, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” As God committed himself to his people, Jesus committed himself to us, the new people of God, through his Death and Resurrection. The self-sacrificing love in Christian Marriage witnesses to God’s love for us in Christ Jesus. How does Paul’s call to love in marriage show that
husband and wife are equal partners? What in the Gospel narrative shows that Peter’s
commitment to Jesus is a response to the gift of faith he has received?
Reflect on your own relationship and commitment to the
Lord. In what ways are you able to confess with Peter: “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
