JUNE-JULY 2016 ● Iyar-Sivan-Tammuz 5776 RABBI DAVID LAZAR

❖From the Executive Director Doug Morton

Can you believe

summer is here again!

The good news, this is

also the time we have our

summer socials! We are

going to Kaiser Grille,

Eight4Nine and Sammy

G’s ... see the box to the

right for dates. These are

always fun so mark your calendars and join

us! Also, this is a great event to bring

prospective members!

Have you checked out our new website

www.templeisaiahps.com? Same

address, exciting new look, thanks to Jeff

Diebley, Rabbi Lazar, Andrea Newland at

Nesteggg and Larea Pettersen, who have

spent countless hours helping to design and

make this work. Some of the major

differences (just to name a few) on our new

website:

• Ability to view your own account, what

you owe and what you’ve paid right on

line (only your own information)

• You’ll be able to edit your own profile

including address, phone number(s)

and yahrzeits

• Online Temple Directory

(only available to members

with a sign in)

We will be sending out an email

- hopefully even before you read

this - with directions how to set

up your password. If you don’t

have the information by mid-

month, call and let us help you

get up and running.

Even if you didn’t see ‘Yossi

and Jagger’ last month, come

join Twice Blessed on Wednesday June 15

at 7:00 pm for ‘Yossi’, the story of a

closeted gay man in Israeli society.

(While the film ‘Yossi’ follows after the

first movie, they are separate stories, so

do come on the 15th if you can). These

Twice Blessed events are great evenings

... come see a good movie, have time

to mingle, and more. You can sign up

ahead of time or just pay when you come

to the door. Members: only $5; guests:

$10.

M e m b e r s h i p

renewal packets

are coming out

shortly and there

is an early bird

discount if paid

by July 15. Even

though our dues

are going up

10%, this is the

first increase in

many years.

We have all committed to do what it

takes to make our congregation

strong. The dues we get now

only cover approximately 30% of

our costs. Please consider

upgrading your membership, if at

all possible. We look forward to

your continued support through

your membership.

Hope to see you all at services

and at our Summer Socials!

Shalom,

Doug

❖From the Rabbi’s StudyRabbi David Lazar

We will soon celebrate the festival ofShavuot which marks the culmination ofthe seven weeks of counting the Omersince Pessah, Passover. In the biblicaltradition, this was purely an occasion tocelebrate the completion of the grainharvest - at that time, first barley, thenwheat - and to begin looking forward togiving thanks for the first fruits of the trees- again, at that time, figs, pomegranates, dates, olives and grapes - throughout thesummer months. It wasn’t until Sukkot, the Feast of Booths, that the entire harvest was celebrated and that all eyes wereturned toward heaven in prayer for, and in expectation of,rain. So then, Shavuot was only a partial celebration of harvestand thanksgiving, and while the stressful period of the grainharvest was over, there was still a lotof work to do, and much to lookforward to. This is our first year anniversary, members of Temple Isaiah andmyself and it’s been a mostwonderful year! I have felt bothprofessionally fulfilled and greatlyappreciated over the last 12 months. In a way, this time of year is acelebration of our harvest together, all that we have accomplishedtogether. Yet, we have just begunand know that there is much work todo as there is so much to lookforward to! But there is another reasonbehind the Shavuot celebration - thiswas the time of year when theIsraelites received the Torah fromGod through Moses at Mt. Sinai. Itdidn’t surface until sometimebetween the end of the biblical ageand the beginning of the rabbinicperiod, but with time, and as a result of Jews living aroundthe world, very often unable to own and farm their own land, this became the primary focus of the holiday. You may know of the custom to stay up all night studyingTorah a sort of reenacting of the ancient event, or perhapsthat of reading the book of Ruth, a story that reaffirms theidea that our tradition of the covenant with God being open toall who choose to be included therein. Perhaps then, it’s most appropriate that we celebrate ourone-year anniversary on Shavuot. We are surely acommunity that is welcoming to all who seek out our traditionand choose to become part of the Jewish people. Ouropenness to all who walk through our doors and wish to studyour tradition attests to our spirit of inclusivity. And we are also a congregation of learners - our activeparticipation in ongoing classes and courses, seasonallectures and events like the Film Festival and our Twice

Blessed series, shows that we are a congregation that lovesto learn and expand our Jewish horizons. We will be adding even more opportunities for intellectualgrowth in the season to come.

● In addition to our Philip & Eleanor Short Lecture

Series in partnership with UC Riverside, we will be offeringan exciting new series this year, through a generous grantfrom our local Jewish Federation, entitled “Judaism For the21st Century,” in which some of the most provocativecontemporary rabbis will present new approaches to prayer,God and Jewish Mysticism.

● We have recently received a multi-year commitment fromour member Harold Clumeck for an annual four-part series -“Psalm Springs” in memory of his life-partner, JerryBehrend. We are building on the success of a mini-seriesthat we offered together with the Church of St. Paul in theDesert and I will be inviting local Christian clergy to teach, together with me, their favorite psalms.

● After the success of our ten-part series in which we readRabbi Arthur Green’s little book, wewill continue this coming season with“Reading with the Rabbi” that willoffer participants a chance to read -in a guided and augmented fashion -a noteworthy offering from the worldof Jewish literature. These and a number of othercourses will be offered throughoutthe season beginning in September.Stay tuned for more information inthe coming weeks! We might not stay up one night ayear, but we certainly keep the Torahstudy going throughout the year! Both celebrating the harvest -what was and what will be - as wellas renewing the covenant of Torahon Shavuot are ancient concepts yetstill relevant to us here at TempleIsaiah. For my part, I am trulygrateful for a fantastic first year ofstudy, prayer and action. And Irenew my commitment to our

congregation and to Jewish life in the Palm Springs area. Hag HaShavuot Sameah!
