Your new home stands proud in Hackney Wick. What was once for centuries the beating heart of industrial East London is now an artistic hub where old blends with the new and a generation of curators have turned this canal side village into the most exciting place to be in the city.

This is where it happens. Where beer is served straight from the tank, where coffee shops are workplaces and where restaurants are housed in barges nestled on the water.

The Smokehouse is the place to enliven your living.

Clarnico: Aerial shot, with Hackney Wick to the left of the River Lea Navigation

Old Smokehouse

1922

Back in Victorian London, the Gas Light and Coke Company established FishIsland at Hackney Wickas a small factory townfor their workers and they named the streets after freshwater fish found in the River Lea.

Today the naming of Old Smokehouse tips itshat to the long traditionof family businessessmoking fish in HackneyWick for generations, standing as a symbol ofthe historical graft andcraft in the Wick.

The best is yet to

comeAs old Hackney Wick makes way for the new, an exciting wave of culture is set to hit the area. The artistic personality of the Wick will grow and thrive as the V&A, London College of Fashion and Sadler’s Wells Theatre all make the neighbouring Olympic Park their home.

Educational institution UCL is also setting up camp across the canal, and Loughborough University has a base at Here East. Lying just a few minutes’ walk from Hackney Wick Here East houses over 1.2 million sq ft of shops, restaurants as well as a workers across the tech and business worlds.

It’s such a great spot that BT Sport has already moved in.

An area within Queen Elizabeth Park, already home to the Copper Box arena, Velodrome and London Stadium, is also set for major development which will include new homes, schools and The International Quarter – a business centre and new office for TFL and the Financial Conduct Authority. All this change will generate over 50,000 jobs for the area and see The London Legacy Development Corporation establish one of the largest new urban spaces in Europe for over 150 years.

What's Happening

After dark

There is a unique vibrancy to Hackney Wick. It’s a home, a place to create and a place to share new experiences. The Yard Theatre

Sandwiched between two parks, and wrapped in canals, here, you feel as though you’re in a village rather than a bustling metropolis.

Pretty barges line the tow paths, and groups of friends huddle around small tables outside cafes before picking up street

food from London’s gourmands.

No day in Hackney Wick is ever the same. Temporary galleries pop up, quirky pilates studios play with a new workout and exciting developments rise from the rubble. If something’s happening here, you must be involved.

Bars and restaurants dot the canal side whilst quirky restaurants and pop up’s house themselves in the remnants of disused factories where locals sit at shared tables and the staff remember your name - and your regular tipple.

In the summer, terraces and beer gardens that cater for catch up’s in the sun, transform at twilight when the secret warehouse parties too cool for guestlists evolve the atmosphere to accommodate the nocturnal party animals of East London.

ParklifeKnown by many as ‘The People’s Park’, Victoria Park lies less than a 5-minute stroll west of Old Smokehouse.

Hot summer days see the perfectly maintained grounds attract friends barbequing and children cart wheeling, whilst all year-round, joggers and cyclists make their way around the fishing pond and boating lake alongside social butterflies Instagramming the view.

East of the Wick, the newer Queen Elizabeth Park basks in the Olympic legacy afterglow. As well as giving you 560 acres of woods and trails to explore, here, you can step inside impressive venues such as the Velopark and Aquatics Centre, built in the run up to the 2012 games. Plus there’s a 114m high helter-skelter winding down the Arcelormittel Orbit sculpture if you fancy something a little different.

Victoria Park

waterwaysHackney Wicks’ waterways served as a transport link for thousands of years and acted as trade veins during the peak industrial era as well as during the Olympics, connecting Hackney Wick to the rest of London and the home counties.

Today, the canals are popular with everyone from business owners who sell books from a barge, to people who prefer to pedal their bicycles along the miles of paths. Hertford Union Canal and River Lea Navigation pass north and east of The Wick, whilst Regent’s Canal provides gets you from east to west, all the way from Limehouse to Paddington via Angel.

Wick Way of LifeAs the home of creatives for decades, Hackney Wick’s vibrant modern history serves as the perfect backdrop for the thriving communities living and working in Fish Island today.

The Yard Theatre, locatedjust moments from OldSmokehouse, hosts eventsand performances all yearround, whilst musicians andDJs are drawn away fromthe mainstream venues inShoreditch and have movedfurther east to Hackney tohost their gigs in clubsand bars for those in theknow.

Retail TherapyOver 250 shops and 70 restaurants are what you’ll be greeted with, after a 15 minute walk, behind the doors of Westfield Stratford City.

As the largest shopping mall in Europe, you’ll find anything you could possibly need from groceries to designer shoes and everything in-between.

But this is no ordinary shopping centre. Westfield is a destination.

Train like an OlympianWant to take your workout beyond a jog round the park?

Within a 10 minute walk of Old Smokehouse you can reach the most exciting sporting venues in the country, where you can follow in the footsteps of Olympic heroes.

The London Aquatics centre gives you access to two 50m pools along with the Tom Daley Diving Academy, whilst over at the Velopark you can have a go at track cycling, road racing, BMX or mountain biking. Upon structural completion, the renowned Buckley Gray Yeoman worked on the wayfinding, exterior and communal areas of the building. Listed as one of the top 50 UK architectural practices, BGY were guaranteed to deliver the highest quality designs that bring the outside in, drawing on the industrious past of Hackney Wick to highlight feature brick walls and exposed woodwork.

buckleygrayyeoman.com

We worked closely with the award winning team at HWO to conceive, design and plan the development of Hackney Wick and Fish Island.

At the forefront of this creative process was their willingness to take cue from the area’s historic warehouses to generate a series of buildings that seamlessly merge the old with the new.
