    the narrowest of spaces – with its specially designed boom and a

    tail swing radius of just 1.90 m, the new 328D LCR tunneling excavator

    from Cat and Zeppelin is ideal for this type of work. The high-perfor-

    mance hydraulics on this machine offer outstanding tear and breakout

    forces. Its extremely robust construction, high-strength steels in areas

    under significant stress, additional struts, reinforced bearings, and

    generously dimensioned undercarriage ensure outstanding durability.

    The stable sliding door enables convenient entry and exit regardless

    of the position of the equipment. The comprehensive range of stan-

    dard equipment also includes a quick coupler and special tunnel

    construction equipment such as particle filters and a fire extinguis-

    Short TailThe particularly short design of the tail only marginally protrudesover the undercarriage, even when the upper structure is in a per-pendicular position. This is ideal for managing heavy loads onrestricted construction sites.

    Tail Swing RadiusThe small tail swing radius, which has been reduced from3080 mm featured on the 329D L to just 1900 mm on the 328DLCR, means that the operator can focus on the positioning of thework tool when working in restricted spaces. It also makes itmuch easier to maneuver the machine.

    Lift and StabilityThe boom has been moved further towards the center of the machine.The 328D LCR therefore has a greater lift capacity over the frontthan the 329D L. The 328D LCR is also equipped with theundercarriage of the 336D L, thus offering outstanding stabilityfor its class.

    Environmental ComplianceThe Cat C7 also features ACERT technology, a concept combininga whole host of individual innovations. It is applied directly to fuelconsumption to dramatically reduce emissions without compromi-sing performance, reliability, or serviceability. The C7 fulfills thestringent limits of Stage IIIA standards. The tunneling excavator isalso equipped with a particulate filter as standard.

    PerformanceThe C7 engine provides 8% more power than its predecessor the3126B, which was installed in the 325C LCR.

    Automatic Engine Speed Control (AEC)The two-stage AEC with its practical one-touch idle offersincredibly low fuel consumption and noise levels.

    Engine ControllerThe new ADEM™ A4 electronic control module manages andcoordinates injection and the quantity of intake air in order tooptimize the specific performance of the engine under any loadcondition. The variable performance characteristics controlmeans it is possible to adapt immediately to changing opera-ting situations.

    InjectionThe accurately-controlled pre, main, and post-injections resultin a significant reduction in the combustion chamber tempe-rature, leading to improved fuel combustion and considerablylower emissions. All things considered, this progressive tech-nology pays dividends through the resulting increase inproductivity.

    Cooling SystemThe cooling fan is driven by a temperature-controlled viscousclutch clutch to minimize fan noise. The electronic control unittakes into account the engine speed, coolant temperature, andhydraulic oil temperature to set the optimum fan speed.

    Air CleanerThe main cartridges and safety cartridges of the quick-changedry air filter can be installed and removed without tools. Anindicator in the monitoring system informs the operator whenmaintenance is required.

    Noise ReductionNumerous constructive measures have contributed to a conside-rable reduction in operational noise – such as carefully tailoredrubber bearings, sound-absorbing material on the oil pan, valvecovers, and spur-gear covers, plus an additional reinforced engi-ne block. Furthermore, the performancecharacteristic- controlledmultiple injection ensures that fuel consumption is noticeablyquieter.

    Component LayoutAll the main hydraulic components – the pumps, control blocks,and tank – are positioned as close to each other as possible tominimize friction and turbulence losses and thus optimize theefficiency of the system. The new radiator arrangement improvesoperator comfort, as the heated cooling air and diesel enginenoise are expelled on the side away from the operator.

    Pilot SystemThe pilot hydraulic pump is completely independent from thetwo main pumps and provides sensitive control for all thehydraulic systems.

    Cross-Sensing ControlThe hydraulic cross-sensing control makes the maximum horse-power of the diesel engine available to the two main pumps toensure fast work cycles.

    Boom and Stick Regeneration CircuitThe boom and stick circuits are fitted with an energy-recoverysystem, which noticeably improves the energy balance andaccelerates work cycles.

    Auxiliary Hydraulic Control ValveThe standard auxiliary control valve activates high and mediumpressure hydraulic work tools such as hammers and drumcutters.

    Hydraulic Cylinder SnubbersSnubbers are located at the rod-end of the boom cylinders andboth ends of the stick cylinders. Benefits include reducingsound levels, cushion shocks while extending component life.

    Standard Tunneling boomThe generously dimensioned box section with torsion resistantcross-sections is the base for the tunneling boom with 2x45°tilting mechanism. The robust and extra reinforced swing bearingis built into the boom and can be tilted by up to 45° on both sides.This ensures maximum operational flexibility in narrow tunnelprofiles. The tilt cylinders of the swing bearing are arranged asgenuine actuating cylinders, and are thus capable of more thanjust aligning the equipment accordingly before operation. Thebucket stick is 4,65 m long.

    Linkage PinsAll pins in the attachment linkage have thick, hard-chromiumplating for optimum protection against wear and corrosion.Their increased diameter ensures forces are distributed moreevenly.

    Short Tunneling BoomEquipped with this boom, especially tailored for common Euro-pean tunnel profiles and optimized for low working heights, the328D LCR provides almost its maximum advance of 2,30 m at aworking height as low as 5,50 m. That’s why the 328D LCR isthe only 43 t tunneling excavator requiring a work space likesmaller 27 t machines, while providing a much better advance,due to higher performance. Less required space may also decreasethe tunnel profile, which will reduce the material volume andenable a lighter tunnel construction.
