Th e im portanc e of the archeologica l m ater ial here prese nted l ies in two facts : f irst , most of
i t com es from th ree dist inct si tes, Gizeh, Na ga ed-D er, and Der el-Ballas, and seco nd, the variou s
groups belong to certain definite periods, so that they afford a clear insight into the art anp
workm anship of the d if ferent p laces. T he N ag a ed-D er mater ial , which fol lows the Gizeh mate
r ial , incidentally br ings out m ore emphat ical ly the beauty of the ar t of Gizeh. T he mater ial repre
sents par t of the resul t s of the excavat ions carr ied on by the Hearst expedi t ion of the Univer
si ty of California more than twenty years ago.
In continuing the series in Eg yp tian A rch eol ogy s tarte d by REISNER and MACE, the auth or
has found c onside rable difficulty in al locating and c hecking t he m ea ge r d ata which we re furnished
the Museum author i ties . D uring th e two deca des that have p assed s ince the shipment of the
mater ial f rom Egypt to America, the or ig inal numbers g iven to the objects by the excavators
have , in many instance s, becom e alm ost i l legible or eve n c omp letely invisible, so tha t in a num ber
of cases no number could be assigned . In these case s, the s tones acqui red f rom our own expe
di tion were g iven numb ers prec ede d by T(e mp orar y) M(useum) N(um bers) . Ston es which be ar
the abbreviat ion Bt . before the Museum number have been purchase d.
Th e large col lect ion in the Egypt ian sect ion of the Universi ty Museum is now being cata
logued ; the author , however , com men ced work on the s teles whi le they were s ti ll uncata logue d.
His main endeavo r was di rected towar d reascer tain ing the prove nanc e, and the exact num bering,
corres pond ing to the tom b num bers, of the s tones. Copious no tes m ade dur ing the labor of
cata logu ing, could n ot be uti lized for this publication be cau se of the lack of a check which only
the ex cav ator 's note s can furnish. Dr . REISNER, no do ubt, wil l inc orp ora te within his account of
the Gizeh excavat ion that por t ion al so of the work which was carr ied on whi le he was in charge
of the Hearst expedi t ion.
W hile i t would in som e ways h ave b een desira ble to await his accou nt, i t wa s conside red
impract icable to hold back longer the presen tat ion of the mater ial . An d since I have succeeded
in a large n umb er of cases in ascer tain ing the correct pro vena nce of the s tones, scholars , no doubt ,
wil l welcome the pres ent publ icat ion. The arra nge me nt of the p lates is according to s i tes, which,
as seeming the most natural , has been fol lowed.
O wing to th e fact tha t the inscriptions of the steles do no t deviate in any way from th e well
known formulas, it was deem ed unnecessary to g ive t ranslat ions of them. A t tent ion has been paid

INTRODUCTION.
to the fact that the l i thographic p lates present a readable text . A scient i f ical ly exhaust ive t reatment
of the ma terial has no t bee n the pur po se and if und erta ken , could be fruitful of results only
after the classification of the entire material in the Museum. A discussion of the inscription on the
lower par t of s tone N o. 84, and of that of No. 85 wil l app ear e l sewhere. Th e tex t herewi th g iven
will fully suffice for an easy and quick orientation.
My than ks are du e to my friend, Profe ssor GUNTHER ROEDER, Dir ecto r of the Pelizaeus Museum
in Hi ldesheim, for the in terest he has taken in the work. He has assi s ted in reading the proofs ,
has supervised the m aking of the p lates , and he has g iven valuable advice in the arran gem ent
of the plates. I am also under deep obligation to the President of the Universi ty of California for
permission to include here the two colored plates of the beautiful stele of \ i \

5 Th e Mu seum also posses ses the stele of (1(1 which has bee n omit ted for publ ication .
6 The wife of

ac cording to the statue of husb md and wife found in the sand

was a stone and mud superstructure with a niche for the stele; also that i t bad no pit underneath, so that
i t must have belonged to one of the neighboring tomb s. This statem ent m akes i t certain that the stele
belongs to N 4746.
9 Th e M useum's No. NN N B ox 68 should be ch anged to N 4748, or to N 4746 (see above note 8).
