Dear Mr. Rolf,

Now, after about 32 years, you are going to officially handover the torch you first lit in 1986 envisioning a world free from hunger and fully enjoying the right to food by all. Your formal association with FIAN and struggles that we collectively fought may have been over but your guidance and the legacy you have left behind will always inspire us fighting against violations of right to food, injustices and discriminations of any forms and manifestations. We are aware of the struggles that you hard fought through several years. We share your feelings when you and other pioneers created Food First Informa-tion and Action Network (FIAN). We will not forget remembering you as the North Star of FIAN International.

As I recall we have been working together since 2010 and there have been several milestone moments in that trajectory - in relation to our shared commitment to People’s Sovereignty and Human Rights and the long search for access to justice for the affected communities impacted by the operations of TNCs.

It’s just eight short years but we have shared really groundbreaking developments:

Its been a trajectory of inter-change and shared learning - through several ETOs Conferences; Vi-enna+20 Conference-a strategic opening to migrant and refugees rights; TA Strategy Meetings & Statements; and in particular the joint work on the Global Campaign 8 Points, 6 Points and final text Proposals document on a Treaty on Transnational Corporations and their Supply Chains with regard to Human Rights (https://www.stopcorporateimpunity.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Treaty_draft-EN1.pdf). On this latter, Gonzalo recalls “the last series of consultations and debates within the Global Campaign about many issues involving mostly the role of States and the challenge put by TNCs re-garding human rights. It was through a debate on ‘violations’ that I learned more on the HR paradigm and how each piece of its puzzle accommodates in the whole picture. Rolf had to do a huge pedagogic exercise with me and our comrades. He was our teacher and we enjoyed challenging him a lot!”.

Our special encounters have also included in-depth principled debate on the threats to Human Rights and Corporate Capture – in the TNI-FIAN meeting in Paris and in the Conference with social move-ments in Heidelberg (2016).

There has been lively contestation and struggle of ideas-but always in a comradely spirit. Now we struggle together inside the Global Campaign – for a very ambitious Treaty. But it is not only the Treaty that unites us but our participation in the movements for transformative system change that aim to end – in the longterm - the hegemony of corporate power on our current economic and political paradigms.

We are very thankful - its has been an amazing opportunity to share this struggle with such a qualified, strategic and sensitive comrade.

We count on you dear Rolf to be close by in these ongoing and intense struggles! And in that context we wish you a very active and engaged work up ahead!

I have known Rolf for over 23 years now. It was at the end of 1993, quite a grim winter day if I remem-ber well but Rolf made it a lot brighter. FIAN was still new by then, yet some persons and institutions in Geneva, Maastricht and elsewhere had recognized the power of the human right to feed oneself. This was due to the very specific and unique Rolf power, the power to convince, to never give up, always the right tone, always insisting, ever again taking another perspective to put the right to food arguments back on the table, rendering them always a bit stronger. I was lucky to work closely with Rolf for over 10 years. I have learned so much and now I am so thankful for all the insights he gave me paired with this other aspect of the Rolf power: his humor.

Please Rolf, carry on writing for the right to food!

Ich habe eine ganze Zeit lang darüber nachgedacht, was das nachhaltigste ist, an was ich mich in unse-rer gemeinsamen Zeit erinnere.

Dann bin ich immer weiter zurückgegangen, bis mir das Wochenende meiner Dritte-Welt-Gruppe in Ravensburg in Arisried im Allgäu in den Sinn gekommen ist. Das muss ungefähr Frühjahr 1986 gewesen sein. FIAN international war gerade gegründet. Wir hatten eine Anzeige des Franziskani-schen Bildungswerks gesehen, das angeboten hat, ein Wochenende inhaltich zu gestalten. Da warst Du zusammen mit Pater Vincent angereist um die Idee von FIAN rüberzubringen. So haben wir uns kennengelernt. Der Höhepunkt des Wochenendes war ein Rollenspiel über einen Landkonflikt, bei dem die Teilnehmer des Seminars über sich hinauswuchsen und das die Problematik und den FIAN-Ansatz plastisch darstellten - war einfach super! Danach hast Du nicht aufgegeben zu kontaktieren und zur FIAN Gruppe Heidelberg-Land einzuladen. Obwohl der Ansatz und was ich an dem Wochen-ende gehört hatte wirklich beeindruckt hatte, hat es noch ein paar Monate gedauert, bis ich das erste mal dabei war. Danach nahmen die Dinge ihren Lauf: Erst die Fallarbeit um Togo, Orissa in Indien, dann die FIAN Gruppe in Karlsruhe mit der Fallarbeit um den Narmada-Staudamm. Meine Zeit als Rechnungsprüfer zusammen mit Bernd Riegraf bei FIAN-International und unsere Diskussionen um die Grenzen von DBASE in der Buchhaltung. Dann meine Zeit als Schatzmeister von FIAN Internati-onal. Da überall warst Du immer einer der wichtigsten Ansprechpartner und wir hatten viele, , viele, viele gemeinsame Diskussionen, auch kontroverse - allerdings stets aus der Perspektive was das Beste für FIAN ist. WOW, dieses Wochenende hatte wirklich Einfluss!

Dear Rolf,

I had heard about you before I met, the man behind FIAN. The man who turned a concern with the gaps in human rights activism at the time into action, moving from a discussion in your basement to a global movement. When we first met, during an International Council Meeting, I remember feeling out of my depth, a young student with little understanding of the issues we were discussing. Despite my inexperi-ence and naïveté, you, and the whole FIAN family, were welcoming and patient, always willing to take the time to explain, always inclusive. An inclusion that led to a career in human rights. But I also re-member other engagements – conversations over a beer and asparagus in Heidelberg, exhausted after an IC meeting in Paris, negotiating a code of conduct for the right to food somewhere in a forest in Germa-ny. So, thank you for the lessons and encouragement and for your dedication over the years. I wish you a fantastic and fulfilling retirement – you deserve it!

The way we remember Rolf - a silent soldier for right to food, who with his colleagues developed FIAN from scratch. Rolf visited us firsr time during anti eviction movement at Odisha in 80s. (agsinst pro-posed missile base expansion of the government which would lead to relocation of 100 coastal villa-ges). My father Biplab Halim and his colleagues were aactively supporting people's movements against eviction and tried to build larger CS opinion. At this juncture we came across Rolf (mid 80s) and he visited us and Odisha. Later he was the key speaker in quite a few lectures organised in Bengal and Odisha on right to food, which during those days was a relatively new concept, or tool of analysis. We remember him as very dedicated, well researched and down to earth person. We also remember his tremendous skill of organisation building and simplicity. Later on when we visited FIAN in Germany, in it's Taubenfeld's small office, Rolf would come to receive us in the railway station, we would be staying at the place of some FIAN volunteers. That simplicity, dedication, belief in his own ideology & work, gradually made FIAN known all over the world. With growth comes growth linked issues, today FIAN is a professional human rights organisation, better equipped etc. maybe at the cost of that simplicity and one to one bond of activism but for us Rolf's image remains that of a dedicated human rights activist, more than a human rights professional.

We do have sometimes disagreement on strategies but we never disagree on core principles, we too very much believe right to food is a basic human right. On behalf of FIAN West Bengal, I wish Rolf many more productive years ahead and his work would always inspire us, whenever we fight for right to food. I have an old photo here, from Germany. Allá hablamos sobre DESC y en el año 1996 Fian Internacional traduzio el libro amarillo "Derechos Económicos, Sociales y Culturales: su tiempo llegó". E asi empezamos una relación profesio-nal y de amistad hasta los dias actuales. En 1996 empezamos el intercámbio CPT-FIAN Internacional y plantamos las semillas de FIAN Brasil que fundamos formalmente en 2000 con su apoyo contínuo desde el Secretariado Internacional. Portantanto, Rolf: case 20 años pasaron y tenemos una sección de FIAN Brasil fuerte en la lucha por el derecho a alimentarse. For Rolf: a friend and fellow human rights advocate

Rolf has always been a source of inspiration for the struggle to protect human rights. For more than 25 years we have worked together and I got to know him as a committed advocate for a global society based on respect for human rights. His drive and perseverance have also motivated me. Not educated as a lawyer he admirably evolved into someone who is known for his creative ideas and reasoning. He has the ability to bring people together and work towards a common goal. He has acted as the motor of many projects which required a lot of coordinative work. I feel privileged that the two of us have been able to collaborate on many occasions, especially in the area of clarifying and developing norms in the field of economic, social and cultural rights (Maastricht Guidelines, 1997 and Maastricht Principles, 2011). Let’s hope that our latest project on the human rights of future generations will have a similar significance and outreach. Maastricht University is proud to be the academic partner par excellence of Rolf and FIAN. We have also been fortunate to place several law students as interns at FIAN’s Inter-national Secretariat. Rolf is a warm, empathic person whose strong commitment to the cause of human rights is an example to others. I very much wish that he will be able to continue his good work for many years to come.

Rolf Kunnemann from 1986 for more than three decades worked tirelessly and contributes immensely to the organisation that he founded. As a student of International Relations in the late 1980's in Gothenburg, FIAN soon become the answer for how to combine my university studies with engaging in real and transformative work - and in many ways this changed the course of my professional and personal life.

Together with Stina, Pia, Anders, Minja, Abi and others from the Swedish section - we all became part of that dynamic development of a young organization.

At the centre were Rolf and Michael W, working out of that very first small office in Rolf´s house. We met and worked with fantastic and inspiring friends from around the world and participated in so many international meetings, in so many places, Paris, Bonn, Bury St Edmunds, Copenhagen, Gothen-burg, Manila, Oslo, Gålö and of course Heidelberg.

Since I was the President of FIAN International 1998-2004 I also had the immense privilege of working even closer with Rolf during those years.

I´ve always cherished Rolf´s strong commitment for human rights, his strategic thinking, his sense of humour, and his happiness and pride in seeing FIAN grow over the years, in numbers, sections, experti-se and influence.

On an even more personal note, I met my Norwegian husband Carlan through FIAN. In the early 90's he was active in FIAN Norway, while I was part of FIAN Sweden. We first met at an International FIAN-meeting in Nydalshytta, outside of Oslo. With our daughter Elvira born in 2007, I guess I can thank Rolf not only for building a FIAN family, but also for my very own family.

Rolf un ser extraordinario, sensible, amable, tenaz, reflexivo, compartido, con una claridad de lo que quería hacer de FIAN, tuvo la capacidad de ver que existen derechos fundamentales para el ser humano. El es el responsable de que en el mundo se hable y se defienda el “Derecho Humano a Alimentarse”. Un ser comprometido y convencido de que los seres humanos tienen derecho a no padecer de hambre.

Inspirador de la Red Internacional por el Derecho Humano a Alimentarse FIAN, la revista Hambre de Justicia expresa lo que significaba los derechos económicos, sociales y culturales, visión que Rolf tuvo la capacidad de entender y luego de transmitir a los que buscábamos acabar con el hambre en el mundo, de exigir que los estados respetaran, protegieran y garantizaran la realización del derecho de las personas a “Alimentarse” por si mismos. Respetando sus tierras a los campesinos, el derecho a sus territorios y sus recursos naturales, derecho al trabajo y el pago de un salario digno. Recibimos de Rolf una gran enseñanza “Luchar por el Derecho Humano a Alimentarse” y los DESC. Y en ese aprendizaje también se fue construyendo y desarrollando la Red, junto con la profesionalización del equipo del secretariado, el aumento en el número de voluntarios, la organización y crecimiento de las secciones y coordinaci-ones. Pero sobre todo el desarrollo de la enorme organización que hoy es FIAN. Hoy está presente en más de 40 países de todos los continentes, tiene, incidencia en las Naciones Unidas, en La FAO, en el ECOSOC. Así como el establecimiento de relaciones y coordinaciones con otras redes y organizaciones a nivel mundial, como La Vía Campesina, La Coalición Internacional del Habitat, con el fin de desarrol-lar acciones conjuntas de incidencia con los gobiernos y lograr cambios en las acciones y en el actuar de estos.Desde 1993 FIAN México estableció contacto con FIAN Internacional, en la Conferencia Mundial de Derechos Humanos en Viena. “El Frente por el Derecho a la Alimentación”, asistía a ese foro, a denun-ciar el hambre y la desnutrición que padecía la mayoría de los mexicanos que vivían en pobreza en nues-tro País, ahí se inicio nuestra relación. En 1994 nos constituimos en una coordinación y en 1996 en la sección mexicana de FIAN y durante seis años participe en el Comité Ejecutivo de FIAN Internacional.

Además de que aprendimos de Rolf a elaborar y participar en acciones urgentes, a documentar casos, a hacer visitas de reconocimiento, a elaborar y a presentar informes paralelos ante ECOSOC. Tuvimos la oportunidad de asistir a las Conferencias bianuales de Fian donde se discutían conceptos importantes para las posiciones de FIAN ante FAO y ONU. Rolf siempre aportaba planteamientos importantes para definir lo que queríamos ser. Era nuestro guía, nuestro filósofo y nuestro educador.

A EL le debemos en mucho la construcción de la Red, el crecimiento de la organización, la capacidad para detectar a personas tan valiosas que han estado en el secretariado y la profesionalización de los miembros de FIAN en defensa del Derecho Humano a Alimentarse. I have known Rolf for more than 30 years, since the inaugural meeting of FIAN in 1986. I have memo-ries of a meeting full of enthusiasm and energy, in a freezing cold small chateau outside Heidelberg in June that year. Rolf is a man of the most impeccable integrity, solidarity, and commitment, and I am fortunate to be able to consider him one of my ‘oldest’ and dearest friends. I look back at many years of a fantastic collaboration and engagement to develop FIAN into the successful and respected organisati-on it is today, and later work on ETOs together. FIAN is a testimony to Rolf’s never ending endeavours. Rolf has many remarkable personal qualities, and he is the only person I know that can manage to syste-matise two days of brainstorming on ETOs into 16 categories and about 49 sub-categories and still keep the focus straight!

As he now embarks on a new chapter in his life, I wish him a long and happy ‘retirement’. I look forward to working with him on his new endeavour in the human rights struggle – the human rights on future generations.

ich habe neulich in Deinen Notizen zum Gründungsprozess von FIAN gelesen, die Du für den 20. Jahrestag um 2006 geschrieben hast. Es ist wirklich klasse, dass Du Dir damals die Zeit für diese Notizen genommen hast. Es war eine so einfache wie außergewöhnliche Idee, eine internationale Menschenrechtsorganisation für das Recht auf Nahrung zu starten. Dass Du diese Idee gefasst, die Initiative ergriffen und der Gründung und Entwicklung dieser Vision und Organisation einen großen Teil Deines Leben gewidmet hast, das ist einfach wunderbar! Ich weiß, dass Du Lobhudeleien nicht magst, und ich weiß auch, dass es nichts zu feiern gibt bei diesen Jubiläen und Abschieden, solange die Verletzungen dieses Menschenrechts und so vieler anderer Menschenrechte weiter gehen und weiterhin straflos bleiben. Dennoch ist mir wichtig, Dir für dieses Lebens-Werk zu danken. Die Saat ist aufgegangen, das Getreide wächst und bringst jedes Jahr eine kleine, aber sehr wertvolle Ernte ein. Es wird noch lange dauern, bis es eine Ernte gibt, die umfassend und durchbruchartig aller Welt zeigen wird, dass die Verwirklichung der Menschenrechte die Ursachen von Hunger und Mangelernährung hinwegfegen wird. Aber es sind in diesen über 35 Jahren große Schritte gemacht worden. Mehr und mehr Menschen, lokale, nationa-le und internationale soziale Bewegungen haben sich diese Verpflichtung ins Herz und auf die Fahnen geschrie-ben. Auch wenn die politische Großwetterlage derzeit ganz und gar nicht hoffnungsvoll stimmt: wir werden nicht nachlassen in diesem Bemühen, diese menschenrechtliche Verpflichtung und diese Bewegungen zu stärken auf allen Ebenen. Dieses Bemühen schließt ein ständiges Lernen ein, ein Nachdenken und ein Sich-selbst-neu-veror-ten im Lichte der ursprünglichen Idee. In diesem Spannungsfeld zwischen konkreter, dringender, praktischer Menschenrechtsarbeit und perspektiven-schaffender, visionärer Fortentwicklung der Menschenrechte hast Du von Anfang an FIAN entwickelt. Diese lebendige Anwendung einer konkreten Utopie hat mich von Anfang an fasziniert und inspiriert, und Du hast sie immer auch persönlich verkörpert. Ich habe sehr viel gelernt in dieser Zeit bei FIAN, von Dir und all den anderen. Ich bin dabei selbst zu einem leidenschaftlichen Menschenrechtler geworden, wie viele andere auch, mit denen Du gearbeitet, gedacht, gelacht und Ideen gesponnen hast. Ich bin Dir sehr dankbar dafür!

Ich weiß, dass Du auch weiter im Rahmen Deiner Möglichkeiten Deine Ideen einbringen wirst. Die Maastricht Konferenz zur Vierten Generation ist ein aktuelles Beispiel dafür. Aber ich hoffe auch sehr und wünsche mir, dass Du in den kommenden Monaten dazu kommst, auch die weiteren Jahre von FIAN nach 1986 etwas näher zu beschreiben, und besonders die roten Fäden, die sich seit dreieinhalb Jahrzehnten entwickelt, verändert und zu neuen Orientierungen geführt haben. Niemand kann/weiß das so gut wie Du. Als Anregung, als Gesprächs-beitrag natürlich, bewegt vom gleichen Motiv, mit dem Du auch 2006 diese quasi szenische Chronologie bis 1986 geschrieben hast: “that you, the reader, may come out stronger from such reflection and even more dedicated to our common cause – the human right to food”.

Rolf, you are what I would call a hero. Thanks to your hard work, commitment, idealism and professi-onal expertise, you have managed to do something incredible: You have changed the way the global so-ciety views the right to food as a human right. You have taught the international society so much about the various concepts and approaches of humanity. I have myself seen the change happen in FAO, the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee and the Committee on Food Security, and of course also in the NGOs and academia. There are few people who have contributed as much as you have to the current - more or less mainstream - approaches of economic, social and cultural rights. This has given concrete results on the ground struggle for the human right to food for people living in poverty. It is impressive!

As well as this, you are special on a personal level. You are one of the kindest, humblest, wisest and most generous people I know. You are really one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met and I am proud to call you a friend.

dich habe ich in den frühen 1980er Jahren bei Amnesty International kennen gelernt – oder sogar frü-her. Diese alten Manuskripte belegen dein Engagement von damals: Links (z. 1982) stehst du noch auf der Bezirksliste als Mitglied der Neckargemünder AI-Gruppe 1614. Rechts (Ende 1984) stehst du auf der ersten Seite als Leiter des AK Food First im AI-Bezirk 3690 auf. In den späteren Listen des Bezirks Heidelberg kommst du namentlich nicht mehr vor – FIAN hat sich schon 1986 ausgegründet! „Das Recht darauf, sich selbst zu ernähren“ wird fortan durch eine eigene Organisation vertreten. Hingegen hat Amnesty ihren Zuständigkeitsbereich erweitert und setzt sich inzwischen auch für alle WSK-Men-schenrechte ein. Es gibt Platz für alle Menschenrechtsverteidiger/innen!

Mit der Entwicklung des Briefeschreibens war klar, dass gute Fremdsprachenkenntnisse nötig waren. Ende 1992 hast du dich an mich (und das Dolmetscherinstitut der Uni Heidelberg) gewandt mit dem Vorhaben, in einem freiwilligen Workshop die entsprechende Terminologie zu erarbeiten. Das Ergebnis war ein fundiertes dreisprachiges Glossar, das noch bei mir im Büro liegt... Nach allen diesen bisherigen Initiativen - keep up the good work!

Es gibt wenige Menschen, die überzeugt von Ihren eigenen Ideen und unabhängig vom Mainstream etwas völlig neues beginnen. Rolf hatte diese Überzeugung. Mit einigen wenigen Mitstreiterinnen gründete er ab 1985 eine Menschenrechtsorganisation, die zu einem der wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und kulturellen Menschenrechte, dem Recht auf Nahrung, arbeiten wollte. Motivation: die Nicht-Akzep-tanz der politischen, gesellschaftlichen und wirtschaftlichen Gründe für Hunger - eine der zentralen Ungerechtigkeiten weltweit. Gegen den Mainstream der Völkerrechtler – nicht nur in Deutschland -, für die diese sozialen Menschenrechte eher politische Ziele waren; gegen den Mainstream der Experten für Ernährungssicherheit, die überwiegend über Bodenfruchtbarkeit, Getreidesilos, Düngemöglichkei-ten und Ernteerträge nachdachten. Welche Stärke liegt in diesem Mut und Aufbruch, neu zu denken, welcher Perspektivwechsel. Was hat die entstehende Organisation (FIAN) bis heute nicht an Trends beeinflusst, für das Verständnis von sozialen Menschenrechten, für das Nachdenken über strukturelle Gründe von Hunger, über systematische Diskriminierungen von Menschen und ganzen Gruppen.

Und dabei so engagiert, so wenig selbstverliebt, so wenig am eigenen Renommee arbeitend, sondern an Lösungen, guten Analysen und klarem strukturiertem Denken orientiert – eine wahre Freude war es immer – und soll es immer bleiben – mit Dir zusammenzuarbeiten und sich gleichzeitig zum Nachden-ken anregen zu lassen und die Ungeduld, die Unzufriedenheit mit dem Status Quo zu spüren und darin Motivation zu finden. Danke für die unglaubliche Kraft, die vielen Anregungen und die Lust am klaren Denken.

Und dabei hat es zudem noch so viel Spaß gemacht, im Keller von Wiesloch, so viel von Rolf zu lernen. Nur heimlich traute ich mich auf Englisch zu telefonieren, meine echte Schwachstelle damals; und mei-ne Rechtschreibfehler – in allen Sprachen…. Abwechselnd haben wir jeden Tag gekocht, ich wurde in die Familie Künnemann integriert, dafür mussten sie meine westfälischen Rezepte akzeptieren. Alles zusammen eher ungewöhnliche Bedingungen und trotzdem so nah, vertraut und freundschaftlich.

I feel deeply honored to have had the opportunity to work with you AND the team we have in Hei-delberg, Geneva, Rome, Brussels, and in all of our sections and groups, sure that we in our own capa-city will continue to work along the same lines of work we do now. Despite all our efforts and mostly efforts of this people in struggle, life has not become any easier for the majority of the population of earth. La vie nous a éloignés, géographiquement. Mais sois assuré que je garde des souvenirs vivaces même de nos premiers pas ensemble: des Magnum du Treff am Tüv aux discussions acharnées dans ton bureau de la gare, en passant par tous les moments passés ensemble avec des gens du monde entier. Sache que malgré nos différences d´opinions, parfois, je reste fascinée par ta persistance et ton enga-gement infaillible pour les droits humains, pour la cause. Tu prends une retraite bien méritée de FIAN mais je sais que tu prépares déjà ton prochain coup "Maastrichtien". Parfais, cela me rassure grande-ment, j´avais un peu peur que tu aies abandonné...que tu nous aies abandonnés! Au plaisir de te recroiser quelque part, à nouveau. Je ne te souhaite pas du repos mais une utilisation de ton incroyable énergie pour les choses qui te tiennent à coeur, en famille et en communauté.

Es increíble ver cómo el esfuerzo y la fe de las personas pueden llegar tan lejos. Con estos dos ingredien-tes, se pueden crear cosas tan maravillosas como FIAN, incluso si a día de hoy muchos abandonan la idea del cambio y sólo intentan curar los grandes problemas con pequeñas tiritas.

Te felicito y también te doy las gracias por haber puesto todo de ti y darle forma a este proyecto. Echa-remos de menos tu presencia en las oficinas de la Hauptbahnhof y en las salas del Consejo de derechos humanos, pero tu esencia estará impregnada en cada una de las cosas que hagamos en nuestro trabajo. Al fin y al cabo, FIAN nació en ti y siempre guardará esas raíces.

Termino con una frase de mi libro preferido -que además tú me regalaste este año por mi cumpleaños- resumiendo tu creación:

It is nearly impossible to imagine FIAN without you, your innovative, unconventional and radical thinking and creativity!

die (relativ kurze) Zusammenarbeit mit Dir war für mich stets mitreißend und spannend. Sowohl der warmherzige und offene wie auch überzeugte, unermüdliche, engagierte und gemeinnützig agierende Mensch und Kollege, der Du bist, hat mich mehr gelehrt, als Du sicherlich erahnst.Als ich zwischen 2006 und 2008 aufs Neue studiert habe (Menschenrechte…), habe ich meine Master-arbeit unbedingt über… „Recht auf Nahrung und ETOs“ schreiben wollen. Die Maastrichter Prinzipien gab’s damals zwar noch nicht, bin aber bei meiner ganzen Hintergrundlektüre einigen usual suspects über den Weg gelaufen, ob sie nun Sigrun, Mark oder… Rolf heißen. Echte „Menschenrechtsvorantrei-ber“, habe ich mir gedacht. Und es ist irgendwie ein zugleich schönes wie auch amüsantes Augenzwin-kern des Lebens, dass ich jetzt – was ETOs bei FIAN betrifft – z.T. in deine Fußstapfen trete. Dein aufrechtes Vertrauen wie auch Deine tatkräftige Unterstützung waren da sehr hilfreich.Ich bin sehr darüber erfreut, dass Du uns noch weiterhin aktiv zur Seite stehen wirst – und die Men-schenrechte vorantreiben willst, für eine gerechtere Welt.

After my application at FIAN you did the first interview with me via phone, later then Georg and then half team in Heidelberg. I still remember that I could not fully answer your question about where would I book this and that kind of expenses in the accounting system, but I think that was not a major obstac-le. As the RtF was somehow unknown to me, I did read your small book with great interest, even not understanding much at that time. I have a great admiration for you as a person that did manage to set up a small but powerful organisation, being able to truly integrate yourself as part of the team when FIAN got bigger and bigger. You have a place at the heart of FIAN and in the hearts of every FIANista. The RtF has more challenges than ever and I am sure you will continue being part of this struggle in many ways.

In a world where being an expert in mathematical sciences appears to be more appealing because it can help to explain how sophisticated machines and other object operate, you courageously left this intellectual baggage aside to speak truth to power and champion a cause that ensures that people can put the nutritious food that they chose to either cultivate or buy on their tables.

For me, you are this father who sits on his dining table while eating and asks yourself this question: are others, miles away from me able to feed themselves with nutritious food?

I still remember fondly and vividly when I first came to FIAN as an intern and worked with you during those initial days/years. Our old FIAN office in Wieblingen, its heat absorbing corrugated iron roofs and the first-ever Hotline I prepared for the Narmada Valley case, etc… The excitement and the feeling of positive nervousness I sensed when you first interviewed me in the meeting room on the first floor still accompany me every morning when I ride to our new office at Willy-Brandt 5.

You have made FIAN – from a basement-office in your house to an internationally renown organisation for the right to food with sections across the globe, an organisation where not only dedication, forward-thinking, strategic and creative ideas to push for the right to food come together, we still remain true to ourselves, to who we are and for whom we are. In all these years, FIAN as an organization has become a “home” for many of us, and I was lucky enough to share this chapter of FIAN with you. Thank you very much, Rolf!

I believe you will always have a place in FIAN, as well as FIAN a place in you.

Du hast damals in meinem Vorstellungsgespräch gesessen, und auf Deine Fragen zum System der Ver-einten Nationen habe ich nicht wirklich brilliert - dennoch bekam ich einige Tage später die Zusage, und konnte mein Glück, bei FIAN arbeiten zu dürfen, kaum fassen. 14 Jahre lang haben wir nun dieselbe Hauptbahnhofsetage geteilt, in der ich die konstruktive Zusammenarbeit mit Dir trotz durchaus manch-mal variierender Meinungen sehr zu schätzen gelernt habe.

Bewundernswert finde ich, was Du vor über 30 Jahren geschaffen hast, aber auch, was Du seitdem hast wachsen lassen: Eine internationale Organisation, die sich hinaus in die Welt bewegt hat, mit eigener Dynamik und Persönlichkeit, auf den Ursprüngen basierend, und in Veränderung begriffen - eine leben-dige Organisation, die Deine Ideen hoffentlich noch lange in die Welt hinaustragen wird.

Dir alles Gute für den nicht ganz so ruhigen Ruhestand, bleib streitbar und widerständig für eine besse-re Welt!

Wir hatten ja nur wenige Berührungspunkte aber ich habe die Zusammenarbeit mit dir bei der Organi-sation von Konferenzen als sehr angenehm und strukturiert erlebt. Auch wenn es manchmal ein paar Unwägbarkeiten gab, waren diese Meetings dank deiner Flexibilität immer ein Erfolg.

Nun ist es an der Zeit dein 30-jähriges Kind „FIAN“ alleine auf die Reise zu schicken und ich bin über-zeugt, dass wir alle zusammen die Aufgaben von FIAN mit dem gleichen Engagement und Idealismus weiterführen werden.

Cuando llegué a FIAN como practicante en 2003 Rolf era el Secretario General, pasaron variosos anios de traducciones y discusiones y luego nos convertimos en colegas de debates jurídicos y compinches (Kumpeln) para desarrollar estrategias de cabildeo. El primer tema fue la justiciabilidad, luego trabaja-mos sobre las ETOs y al final sobre la responsabilización jurídica de las empresas y los derechos de las generaciones futruras…esto último cuando se convirtió en abuelo . • Lo que mas admiro: La visión de Rolf…7 generaciones hacia adelante!!!• Lo que mas nos une: el compromiso por un mundo mas justo!!!• Lo que mas recordaré: la convicción y el humor!!!Tras estos 15 anios de trabajar con Rolf, ahora como representante de FIAN en Ginebra, agradezco a la vida por haber tenido un gran maestro, que espero lo seguirá siendo por algunos anios.Querido Rolf: Mil gracias por todas las buenas conversaciones y los buenos momentos.
