The beautifully crafted 24-metre ‘Stella Nova’ DA 57 joins the Irish fleet and was built for the Supreme Fishing Company of Clogherhead. Supreme Fishing Company Ltd which is operated by father Seamus Connolly along with his sons Niall Connolly and Seamus Connolly Jnr who are currently fishing the 22-metre ‘Margaret Mary’ DA 56 and the 24-metre ‘Patrick C’ DA 107. The ‘Stella Nova’ is the second boat for the company to carry the same name with the previous ‘Stella Nova’ sold to Union Hall last year and renamed ‘Emerald Isle II’. When choosing a boat design and builder, Supreme Fishing had no hesitation in renewing their acquaintance with Mooney Boats Ltd who had delivered the companies previous boat, the ‘Patrick C’ back in December 2014. “We went back to Mooney Boats because they built our previous boat the Patrick C and we were very happy with the build and quality of work” says Niall Connolly speaking to the Skipper at Mooney’s boatyard in Killybegs. “The new Stella Nova is a sister-ship to the Patrick C and we were very happy with the design and layout. The Patrick C performed well and has proven to be very efficient, which was the main reason that we came back to this design with Mooney Boats Ltd.” This is the fourth boat designed for the company by Danish designer, Ove Christiansen of Vestværftet ApS. The hull was built in PTS Shipyard in Szczecin, Poland and towed to Killybegs for finishing. Previous boats designed by ‘Vestværftet ApS for the company included the old ‘Stella Nova’, a previous ‘Patrick C’. the current ‘Patrick C’ and the all new ‘Stella Nova’. There are a few little differences in the design to the ‘Patrick C’ but overall nothing noticeable to the naked eye. The style of the ‘Stella Nova’ is classic and looks well in the water. “The accommodation layout is a little different” Niall tells us with the galley moved to port side and the crew accommodation moved aft “and we also included the addition of extra freezing capacity but apart from that the rest of the boat remains the same. “Our previous experience with Mooney Boats Ltd gave us the confidence to return here to get the ‘Stella Nova’ built. It’s great to have these facilities in Killybegs and here in Ireland to rival any other boat or shipyard in Europe.” One slight noticeable difference is that the wheelhouse on the ‘Stella Nova’ is one-metre forward of the position on the ‘Patrick C’ and this slight correction was made to improve access to the wheelhouse from the deck below and also to gain more room on the stern area behind wheelhouse for net mending and repairs. The ‘Stella Nova’ will fish a twin-rig for prawns using quad- rig and twin-rig nets from Pepe Trawls of Howth and prawn hopper nets from Nordo Trawl. The boat will tow Thyboron doors but it won’t only be prawns that the ‘Stella Nova’ will be targeting. “It’s also hoped that we would diversify into cuttlefish and squid later this year” Niall says. Prawn, cuttlefish and squid catches will be frozen on-board before being landed into the Clogherhead Co-op from where they will be exported to the Continent. The ‘Stella Nova’ will be skippered by Cornelius Schaap and Damien O’Brien who will fish with a crew of five. In the wheelhouse, the electronics package was supplied & installed by Pat Maguire – Marine Electrician of Galway. NEW CLOGHERHEAD “STAR” FROM MOONEY BOATS LTD

Mooney Boats Ltd have just completed their

third purpose built prawn freezer trawler for the Irish fishing fleet.

The ‘Stella Nova’ is the second boat for the company to carry the same name with

the previous ‘Stella Nova’ sold to Union Hall last year and renamed ‘Emerald Isle II’.

Previous boats designed by ‘Vestværftet ApS for the company included the old ‘Stella Nova’, a previous ‘Patrick C’. the current ‘Patrick C’ and the all new ‘Stella Nova’. There are a few little differences in the design to the ‘Patrick C’

but overall nothing noticeable to the naked eye.

It’s great to have these facilities in Killybegs and here in Ireland to rival any other boat or shipyard in Europe.” One slight noticeable difference is that the wheelhouse on the ‘Stella Nova’ is one-metre forward of the position on the ‘Patrick C’ and this slight correction was made to improve

access to the wheelhouse from the deck below and also to gain more room on the stern area behind wheelhouse for net mending and repairs. The ‘Stella Nova’ will fish a twin-rig for prawns using quad-rig and twin-rig nets from Pepe Trawls of Howth and prawn hopper nets from Nordo Trawl. The boat will tow Thyboron doors but it won’t only be prawns that the ‘Stella Nova’ will be targeting. “It’s also hoped that we would diversify into cuttlefish and squid later this year” Niall says.

Kilkeel based Sirm UK supplied and fitted the WIFI system for the ‘Stella Nova’. When it came to the design, manufacture and installation

of the winches and deck crane for the ‘Stella Nova’, Supreme Fishing had to look no further than Killybegs’ owned EK Marine. The ever-reliable company provided: • 3 x EKM Trawl Winches,

15 tonne line-pull with level wind and a drum capacity of 750 fathoms of (2 x fitted with 20mm wire and one with 22mm wire).

• 2 x EKM Double Split Net Drums 6mcubic capacity with 11.5 tonne pull

• 2 x EKM Gilson Winches 5tonne line pull each with drum capacity of 100m of 20mm wire

• 1 x EKM Landing Crane 8m fixed boom lifting capacity

of 1 ton @ 8m and capable of 360degree continuous slewing equipped with 1 ton 2 speed winch, radio remote and deck mounted local controls.

• A hydraulic system, including a wheelhouse control system, consisting of a two-speed directional control for the five winches and two net drums, plus the vessels bow thruster.

• And a Scantrol System which is an auto-shoot and auto-haul system, capable of constantly monitoring winch speeds and the length and tension of the trawl wires.

The system is also capable

of monitoring fuel bunkering and efficiencies, tank levels, heel, trim and temperature all controlled and displayed via a10.1” touch screen pc and accessible remotely via wireless internet connection. Mooney Boats Ltd who are sole agents in Ireland for Guerra Marine Cranes supplied a Guerra knuckle boom marine crane short post Model MC40.55A2, which is fitted with a winch and radio remote control. The yard also supplied a Thistle 24” W Power Block Head for the crane which is fitted on top of the gantry aft. Again, as with the ‘Patrick C’, a huge influence on the choice of the ‘Stella Nova’ design is fuel economy. Maximum power trawling for the least fuel burn. This will be achieved, as with her sister-ship by using an extra-large propeller in conjunction with a slower engine. Fuel efficiency is critical for these vessels because of the distance they have to travel to their fishing grounds whether it be on the Porcupine Bank of the South-West coast in the summer, working the Irish Sea in winter or fishing cuttlefish off the south English coast in autumn. The engine package was supplied by Padmos of Kilmore Quay and consists of: The main engine is a Mitsubishi S6R-TMPTK-3 Tier 2 rated 423kW@1350rpm. This is a modern high-standard and fuel-

efficient engine. The gearbox is a Reintjes WAF reverse reduction 7,476:1, which drives a 2.5 metre four-blade fixed-pitch propeller, controlled with a Kobelt electric controller delivering a top speed of 10 knots. The tail shaft and stern tube are machined and manufactured by the Padmos Shipyard in the Netherlands. The hydraulics engine is a Mitsubishi S6B3-T2MPPTK-3 delivering 335kW@1500rpm with a 120kva Stamford Generator on the front end on the front end and a Technodrive gearbox for three 90kW hydraulic pumps by a 14” air flex coupling. There is also a six-cylinder Mitsubishi 6D16-T 120kva Stamford Generator as a second auxiliary with a Mitsubishi S4S 30kva (air-cooled based), which will be used as the harbour set. The main engine and hydraulic set are both cooled by Blokland double

(LT-HT system) box coolers. Mooney Boats Ltd engineers supplied and installed the complete engine package and piping system on the vessel. KER Group were commissioned by Mooney Boats Limited to deliver a refrigeration package for the new build. This comprised of the “turnkey” design and installation of the following:

• Fish Hold Chilling System at 0°C with Stainless Steel Evaporators & Bitzer Condensing Unit

• Cold Store Refrigeration System Holding at -20°C with S/S Door and Bitzer Condensing Unit

• -25°C Blast Freezer Room with S/S Door, Heavy Duty Product Probe & Bitzer Condensing Unit

• SIMEX Temperature Logging System with Realtime Temperature Readout in Wheelhouse for Hold, Cold Room, Blast Room & Blast Room Product.

Best wishes to Supreme Fishing Co on your new vessel Stella Nova.

Congratulations to the Supreme Fishing Co. with their new vessel “Stella Nova”.

The European Marine Fisheries Fund (EMFF) has provided a six-figure grant to make further improvements to the sustainability of six UK fisheries as part of Project UK Fisheries Improvements. These six fisheries have been selected by the UK supply chain due to their importance for the UK market.

The project is focussed on improving UK fisheries for North Sea plaice and lemon sole, South-West crab and lobster, Channel scallops and South-West monkfish.According to the MSC, the aim is to improve the data, impacts and understanding of these fisheries and to highlight best practice so that all six fisheries with that these fisheries could be entered into MSC assessment within five years.

The project is facilitated by the MSC and carried out by multi-stakeholder Steering Groups involving the fishing industry, fishery managers, scientists and supply-chain. The MSC is working in conjunction with the stakeholders to bring investment into the UK Fishing industry. The €250,000 grant will provide funding for, among other projects, a postdoctoral scientist to conduct research into the Channel scallop fishery. It will also provide funds for Cefas to carry out data assessments and research to understand more about the fisheries and fill in the gaps in their sustainability with work

starting shortly.

Project UK Fisheries Improvements is the latest large fisheries project to receive funding from EMFF. It is an innovative project working towards an environmentally sustainable future for UK fisheries by running Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs) on six UK fisheries.

‘As the chief source of scientific fisheries advice to the UK Government, and expert advisers to regional and international bodies, Cefas has extensive experience in informing policy and management decisions,’ said CEFAS Lead Scientist for the project Dr Stephen Mangi.

‘For Project UK Fisheries Improvement (PUFKI), our team of fisheries scientists will provide analysis and advice to ensure that the MSC fishery improvement programmes or the six commercially important species are underpinned by rigorous and scientifically credible data and information. PUKFI has developed and is in the process of implementing action plans for each fishery and will track progress using the MSC’s bench-marking and tracking tools as they work towards MSC sustainability certification.’

‘The Fisheries & Conservation Science Group in the School of Ocean Sciences at Bangor University, working in collaboration with the University

of York, brings together the top scallop expertise in UK Universities,’ commented Professor Michel J. Kaiser, chair in Marine Conservation Ecology at Bangor University.

‘The team will bring together the current information of the distribution of fishing activity, the distribution of ETP species and will model its effect on the seabed, based on recent influential publications. One of the first tasks will be to consult with industry to ensure that the mapped layers of fishing activity we have relate their view of the distribution of the fishery. The science that comes out of this work will provide the industry with an assessment of those areas where changes will be needed in the amount, frequency or distribution of fishing activity to move it to a more sustainable footing,’ he said.

‘It’s great that PUKFI has secured this EMFF funding to invest in the British fishing industry and help plug data gaps and drive improvements in these fisheries,’ added the MSC’s Claire Pescod.

‘The MSC FIP tools have provided an extremely useful template to help the project develop Action Plans specific to each fishery, identify where improvements are needed and actually implement changes on the water.’

She added that as market demand grows for sustainable seafood, more and more fisheries around the world are making improvements to get MSC certified and gain better access to these markets. This has led to a huge growth in ‘Fishery Improvement Projects’ (FIPs). Each project is a structured process to guide fisheries to fill in any gaps in their environmental sustainability.

Six figure grant for UK fisheries improvements

The recent decision by the Isle of Man Government to lift the requirement for licenced vessels to report for a daily catch inspection has been met with differing reactions.

Under regulations brought into force on January 15th, non-Isle of Man boats had been ordered to report all king scallop catches from Manx waters to an Isle of Man port.

The measure was introduced following concerns about the accuracy of catch reports, and was also aimed at preserving declining stocks.

It is claimed that in December 2017, incidents of catch ’misreporting’ were spotted, which raised concerns that if it

was a frequent occurrence it could affect ’stock security’. That led to the daily reporting requirement.

The pressing issue led to Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon to meet with the Manx government who agreed the rule would be lifted but misreporting catches could lead to licences being suspended.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture has now officially published its agreed policy on licence suspension and confirms that it will actively pursue anyone who breaches fisheries legislation in Isle of Man waters.

The Department has written to the owners of every licensed vessel to remind them that they are at risk

of having their licence suspended if there are reasonable grounds to suspect there is cheating by under-declaring the catch or any other breaches of legislation.

A specialist team at DEFA has been established to closely monitor all vessels’ activity on a daily basis and a risk based system is being developed to ensure that any potentially serious discrepancies are swiftly identified.

Scottish Fisheries Secretary Fergus Ewing welcomed the new arrangements and said the decision will help protect the country’s £3m scallop industry. After the decision by the Manx government to stand down on the reporting requirements, Mr Ewing said the decision was “a relief”.

Geoffrey Boot MHK, Minister for Environment, Food and Agriculture, said: “The Isle of Man Government has worked hard to develop this rigorous enforcement regime. Our valuable fisheries will continue to be carefully policed, as we are determined to protect our stocks.

“We have already contacted the owners of a number of vessels to advise them that we have spotted anomalies in their reporting and remind them they are at risk of licence suspension should this continue.”

Eighty-nine vessels are registered to fish for king scallops in Manx waters and the Isle of Man government said the industry is worth £12m to its economy each year.
