MISSIONSTATEMENTFOR-NMJ• Provide inspiration for our members’ mean ingful programs and degrees.

• Provide convenient opportunities for our members to enhance their lives.

• Provide enjoyable programs and fellowship for our members.

FROMTHESECRETARY-Ill. James G. Fidler, 33° Brethren, in December we look back on the calendar year coming to a close and look forward to the new Masonic year that is upon us, as evi-denced by the Installations of new Masters of the symbolic lodges. The strong Masonic bond linking the Valley of Canton to the blue lodges is evidenced by the active participation of past and current Scottish Rite officers in their symbolic lodges, several of whom continue to serve in prominent positions in their lodges. The Valley’s links to the Grand Lodge are exemplified by the service of our Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Ill. Bro. R. Wesley Webber, Jr. as Trial Commissioner-in-

Chief; by the service as District Education Officers of WB Daniel Schario, Master of Cer-emonies in Brenton Chapter of Rose Croix and newly appointed WB Eric Muehlenbein, Junior Warden, Emeth Lodge of Perfection; and by the service as District Deputy Grand Masters of Ill. and RWB David Hopkins, a past Commander-in- Chief of Stark Consistory and newly appointed RWB Brennan Wallick , Senior Warden, Mystic Council Princes of Jerusalem. RWB Michael Lengler, Most Wise Master, Brenton Chapter of Rose Croix, joins the ranks of Past District Deputy Grand Masters this year. Be sure to extend congratu-lations and offer your support to these brethren who have striven and continue to strive to assist all Masonic Brothers in learning as much as possible about the Fraternity we all love so much. Let’s make sure that all of our symbolic and Grand Lodge officers have our total support as they assume their duties for another great Masonic year. Remember, without the blue lodges, there would be no Scottish Rite. The month of November was a memorable one for the Valley of Canton. Our enormously successful 240th Reunion honoring Ill. David A. Trautwein, 33°, the Valley’s Hospitaler, got underway at our Stated Meeting on November 10 and featured superb ritual work, great dinners and good fellowship as 90 members saw 9 Master Masons complete their Scottish Rite journey and receive special commemorative jewels celebrating their status as 32° Scottish Rite Masons. The Reunion culminated in a gala celebration on November 12 of Scottish Rite Day which included a fantastic performance by the Hall of Fame Cho-rus enjoyed by over 200 people in the Cathedral Room and an evening banquet Honoring Our Veterans attended by over 400 people who heard sometimes humorous and always inspiring remarks by Col. Donald E. Ballard (Ret.), a Medal of Honor Recipient. Scottish Rite can receive no greater accolades than those it receives for hosting an event paying proper respect to those to whom we owe so much. The 241st Reunion of the Valley of Canton will be on April 21 and 22, 2017, and will honor our Valley Secretary, Ill. James G. Fidler,33°.On November 24 we celebrated Thanksgiving, a day when we ponder the things in life that are truly important and express our gratitude to our Divine Creator for the countless bless-ings He has bestowed.Be sure to join us for our Quarterly Stated Meeting at 7:30PM on Thursday, December 8, preceded by a delicious dinner at 6:30PM.Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

GALAEVENTSMARKVALLEYOFCANTON’SCELEBRATIONOFSCOTTISHRITEDAYOn Saturday, November 12, 2016, the AASR, Valley of Can-ton gave the public a glimpse of Scottish Rite’s sense of patriotism and dedication to the community as we celebrat-ed Scottish Rite Day with two events that people will be talking about for quite some time to come!In the beautiful Cathedral Room of the Canton Masonic Temple, the Hall of Fame Chorus entertained over 200 people with a medley of popular and patriotic tunes that left everyone asking for more.In the evening over 400 attended a banquet honoring our veterans with Medal of Honor recipient Col. Donald Bal-lard as the featured speaker. There are no words to describe the sensations we were all experiencing as we listened to stories of courage, com-mitment and sacrifice on the part of U. S. servicemen and women who put their lives on the line to preserve our free-dom. This event also provided an opportunity for the Valley to demonstrate Scottish Rite’s commitment to serving the community and identification with efforts to assist veter-ans through financial support of Col. Ballard’s Forgotten Veterans Program, which provides free funeral services for distressed veterans, and to Dr. Timothy Novelli’s Patriot Project, a nationwide network of Chiropractors furnishing free services to wounded veterans. Dr. Novelli played a key role in securing Col. Ballard’s appearance as the speaker for the evening. The Valley of Canton looks forward to future joint endeavors with Dr. Novelli’s organization.Scottish Rite Masonry promotes religious freedom, patrio-tism, service to humanity and love for our fellow beings. We are pleased that the successful events of Scottish Rite Day enabled the Valley of Canton to share those values with the public in an inspiring and enjoyable way.

Membership by Scott Garan, Chairman So I have been preaching that we show WHAT being a Mason means by HOW we conduct ourselves. It is so very im-portant, because people see us as Free-masons and wonder what’s it all about. Now if we are good men, they will see

that. If we are not, then they will see that too. We can either be our best advertisement or our worst!Another thing I have preached is that we must get the word out to non-Masons that we do good for others! That is the shining light we can show to everyone. Now I have to say, I try to practice what I preach. As most of you are aware, I started a campaign to help worthy veterans in our Valley. I asked that we all bring in some new socks, underwear, shirts, and sweatpants to help out the Canton VA clinic. When I was looking for a veterans group to help, I asked our very own brother Sherman Brick to help. He is a Viet Nam era Special Forces soldier that volunteers to help those at the VA in Canton. He suggested collecting the clothes as many come in for help and may need a change of clothes when they leave. Thus we came up with the idea to collect the clothing.I must say, I think we did better than I expected. I placed a very large box next to the Valley office, and it slowly got filled. Each business meeting would pass and I would see more and more clothing thanks to your generosity! In November, myself and Bro. Sherman Brick met representa-tives at the Canton VA and dropped off our donation. Breth-ren they were very happy. These items of clothing that we donated will give the veterans that need them, some dignity if they are needed. I am very proud of our work and wish to thank all those who donated. As membership chairman I say we need to SHOW others that we DO care for people. With this gesture we have shown a group of veterans that we DO care! To me, THIS is how we spread the word of Masonry! To the veterans that need these items, they will see an outside group that cares for them. There is NO better way of spreading the word about the good we Freemasons do in the world!Once again, I am so proud of all the work we have been doing to spread the word that Freemasonry is more than just an “old boys club,” but that we support our community! I plan on having another drive for the VA in the future, and pray that each of you will participate.I ask that each of you do your best to continue to share hope with non-Masons. To show them that we are men of honor! If we continue to do this in our daily lives, we will grow our ranks because others will want to emulate what we do.Once again brethren, our fraternity has done something that will change someone else’s life, even if it’s for a short time.

JOBSEARCHTIPSTHATHAVECHANGEDBy Monica Rose GwinOhioMeansJobs Centers in Stark and Tuscarawas Counties

The process of searching for a job has evolved and changed in recent years. While the internet has made applying elec-tronically an option, there are many other changes that you need to know in order to make your job search most effective. This month Amy Miller, Resource Center Manager/One-Stop Officer for OMJ Centers in Stark and Tuscarawas Counties, highlights job search tips that have changed.“There have been several significant changes in resumes. Resumes are no longer restricted to one page, especially for people with a professional background. If you are new to the workforce and don’t have a lot of skills, one page is still ap-propriate,” says Miller.Miller cautions that just because you have a great deal of ex-perience, you should avoid writing detailed paragraphs about yourself. Your resume should be concise. You also do not need to include “references available upon request” at the bottom of the resume. If an employer wants references they will ask you for them. Also, the “objective” portion of the resume has been replaced by a “career sum-mary” of an individual’s skills and abilities.“Resumes should be customized. A generic one size fits all resume will not likely be reviewed. Make sure that you are using action words in your resume that match the duties and responsibilities on the job description,” adds Miller. More and more companies are using electronic scanners to do the first review of resumes. The scanner looks at the resume and determines if the items listed in the job descrip-tion match what is on the resume. If they don’t match, your resume won’t get a second look. Always make sure that you Google yourself so you know what will show up if the employer conducts a search on you. There is a wealth of information about everything and every-one at our fingertips. It is naive to think the employer isn’t going to take a few minutes to Google you. It also is very likely that they will search for you on social mediaFinally, be prepared for any type of interview. Interviews can be in person, via telephone, Skype and video, or in a group setting. No matter what medium is used to conduct the interview, you have to be able to impress the employer. Be prepared for whatever type of interview you are asked to complete.Job search is a changing field. The most important step in finding a job is to do your research on what an employer expects, and the most effective way to make the employer notice you. I am proud of each of you for making this world a better place!Scott Garan

Christmas time is quickly approaching as is the Big Ques-tion: “What to do about gift giving?”While there are those who need to receive a tangible gift, there are many who seem to have everything. Something many children don’t have is the ability to read, spell and comprehend due to having the neurological impairment of Dyslexia. Right now there are 20+ children in each of the Ohio Dyslexia Centers receiving one-on-one tutoring to learn the skills needed to become one who understands what was read, to be able to read a-loud without fear of embarrass-ment and to successfully spell in order to write sentences to convey a message. There are just as many on a waiting list in each of the 7 Centers and many more yet to come. Now, about that gift: Give a monetary gift to continue the service offered by the Children’s Dyslexia Center. Honor your gift recipient with a donation to the Center of your choice. Perhaps that someone special has been called home, honor the Memory and the wonderful life of that individual. Recognize an event, anniversary, birthday or award of one who is celebrating. Give the Gift of Reading to a child. For more information, contact the Children’s Dyslexia Cen-ter in your AASR Valley or OES Grand Chapter committee chairman: Diane Phillips at [email protected]

Merry Christmas from the Children’s Dyslexia Center,A big thank you to the members of the Board of Governors for the dedication and enthusiasm they put into keeping the Children’s Dyslexia Center in operation. Their devotion to helping children in the community is commendable. Dyslexia is a language based learning disability. The sci-entific study of dyslexia is ongoing. Brain imagery studies show differences in the way the brain of a dyslexic person develops and functions. Children with dyslexia have prob-lems discriminating sounds within a word. Dyslexia is not due to lack of intelligence or desire to learn; with appropriate teaching methods, dyslexics can learn successfully. Studies show that about 15% of the population has dyslexia. This can affect a person’s self-image. Students with dyslexia often end up feeling “dumb” and less capable than they actually are. Dyslexia also runs in families, dyslexic parents are very likely to have children who are dyslexic. The cost of private tutoring is overwhelming to many parents and they are happy to find out about the Children’s Dyslexia Center. The program at the Center is twofold. We provide free of charge, the highest quality multisensory tutoring in reading and written language instruction to children with dyslexia and we also offer a scholarship for tutors in the art, science and practice of tutoring children using the Orton-Gillingham approach to multisensory teaching of reading, writing and spelling. The program is estimated to be $5000 per scholar. We now have 27 children enrolled in the program who are being tutored by 12 certified tutors and 4 scholars. The wait-list is quite lengthy with 28 children. Fundraising: Please save your ACME receipts. The ACME Cash Back Program opened on August 11 and will end the last of this month. Books are for sale in the main lobby of the building. We have received a grant from the Health Foundation of Greater Massillon to sponsor a child for $5000.This will enable us to take a child from the waitlist who lives in the greater Massillon area. Thank you for remembering the Center with a donation when you paid your Scottish Rite dues. Carol Jones, ICALP, Director Children’s Dyslexia Center

MedalofHonor“Quotes”

“ Greater love hath no man than to lay down his life for his friends.’ From the Revolutionary War, forward, our American service men and women have done that in the name of the freedom you enjoy today.” Jacklyn H. “Jack” Lucas United States Marine Corps Medal of Honor“ As a commander in peace and war, God gave me wisdom and courage to lead; He taught me to defend freedom and seek peace. Wthout peace there can be no freedom. He taught me to love my neighbor as myself and to love my enemy.” Van T. Barfoot United States Army Medal of Honor“Freedom, patriotism and choice are your inalienable rights given to us by the sacrifices of the men and women who serve in the armed forces. In wartime, ordinary Americans will always step forward to defend freedom and protect our liberties.” Alfred V. Rascon United States Army Medal of Honor “There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he doesn’t mind who gets the credit.” PresidentRonaldW.Reagan

MilitaryHumorAfter retiring from the army, a former Artillery Sergeant took a job as a high school teacher. Just before the school year started, he injured his back. He was required to wear a light plaster cast around the upper part of his body. Fortunately, the cast fitted snugly under his shirt and was not noticeable when he wore his suit jacket. On the first day of class, he found himself assigned to the toughest students in the school. The smart-ass punks, hav-ing already heard the new teacher was a former soldier, were leery of him and he knew they would be testing his discipline in the classroom.Walking confidently into the rowdy classroom, the new teach opened the window wide and sat down at his desk. A strong breeze through the window made his tie flap. He picked up a stapler and stapled the tie to his chest!Dead Silence.

Son’s Dyslexia Diagnosis Prompts Mom’s Search for AnswersSeth Gast has dyslexia and a language disorder. For three years, he has used Bookshare’s online accessible library for schoolwork and to find Boy Scout manuals to obtain his merit badges and become an Eagle Scout. His mom, Dina Gast, credits his academic progress to a renowned dyslexia center, excellent teachers and tutors, and Bookshare. In recognition of National Dyslexia Awareness Month, here is Seth’s story.EarlyReadingFrustrationEntering first grade, Seth was a bright little boy, but his mom noticed his enthusiasm for school and learning diminish. He liked books, but seemed to be frustrated with reading. A shadow followed Seth and his family for years. His mom, Dina Gast, arose each day with uncertainty. She remembers her son bringing books home from school that he could recite from memory. Seth had begun to compensate for his reading challenges with memorization. Mrs. Gast talked with teachers about her son’s lack of reading progress and says, “You never want to hear that anything is wrong with your child, but the answers and solutions for my son did not come easily.”Mrs. Gast began to help Seth with schoolwork; still, his read-ing interest and grades fell. By third grade, she enrolled him in the Ohio Virtual Academy, a tuition-free, fully-accredited, online public school. By sixth grade, Mrs. Gast scheduled tests at the Akron Children’s Hospital where a physician who specializes in neurology developmental and behavior science diagnosed Seth with dyslexia. He also recommended Book-share and the Children’s Dyslexia Center, Inc. run by the Scot-tish Rite Charity and Masonic Order. Mrs. Gast quickly signed her son up for an individual membership to Bookshare.FromBarelyReadingtoReadingwithFullComprehensionFor two years, Seth worked with his online teacher and a certi-fied tutor at the Children’s Dyslexia Center using accessible ebooks from Bookshare. At that time, Seth’s reading, writing and spelling skills were barely at a first grade level. “It’s been amazing to watch his progress,” says his mom. Seth went from barely reading to full comprehension. His handwriting, once gigantic and messy, turned into beautiful cursive. His vocabu-lary and spelling skills improved. Seth also has a much higher self-esteem and a greater understanding of his reading dis-ability. “At first, I did not want people to know that I could not read,” he said. “I memorized a lot of books, but that got harder to do. Bookshare, my teachers, my technology and my mom helped me so much!”BoyScoutsHonorThis year, Seth is completing his Boy Scouts of America merit badge series to become an Eagle Scout. He says, “I still like to hold a printed book or textbook, but I also want to hear the information read aloud.” He reads on an iPad with Read2Go. “The best thing about a digital accessible book is that you can read with your eyes and listen with your ears. This type of

sinks in for me. I know I am smart. My brain is just wired differently.”LeisureReadingSparksaCareerInterestGrowing up, Seth loved to read about nature and animals. It is no surprise that in high school he does well in animal sci-ence and biology. He wants to attend Ohio State University to become a zoologist. He says, “I was inspired by Jack Hanna, a well-respected American zookeeper at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium who has dyslexia too.”Since identifying Seth’s learning disability, Mrs. Gast is so proud of her son. “Our lives and Seth’s reading skills have improved significantly! He is still a slow reader, but listening to audio books has improved his ability to get schoolwork done with less frustration. He just completed his first se-mester in high school with all A’s. This achievement would not have been possible without teachers who know the advantages of using accessible ebooks and technologies and these valuable resources to support children and adults with dyslexia and other print disabilities.”

Wayne-HolmesClubWith the Holidays (Holy Days) coming soon, it is time to move away from Wayne/Holmes Club activity and direct our attention to family and friends. It is a good feeling to be re-membered on these occasions hearing from folks with whom we may have lost touch.Christmas especially, with all our lights and parties and gifting (if that is a word) is a time to think about God’s gift. Reaching out again to touch the lives of his children. With all of the inclusiveness we have brought upon ourselves, acknowledgement and worship of the god of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, our God, father of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, have been lost or ignored or at most, moved from center spotlight. Our nation was founded by men of faith. It was the churches that formed the concept of a civil government. The early colonial constitutions required one to be of a particular reli-gious persuasion; later changed to be any Christian other than Catholic, then any Christian, then included Jews, then any belief, and now no confession of faith is required at all and Christianity is shunted aside or even outlawed.Have we forgotten who we are? And whose we are? This sounds too much like a sermon, but for the greatest joy of the holidays remember family and friends by remembering the greatest gift of all time; the One who redeems us all.Brother Dana Keirstead

InmemoriamWhen the world is upside down, brush away the tears, the frown,

Say a little prayer and soon, a ray of hope will conquer gloom. Our lot is easier to bear when we talk to God in prayer.

And like a beakon shining bright, prayer will soothe the grievous plight.Tales of woe, like useless weeds, serve no purpose, but the seeds

That enable us to cope are the prayers of faith and hope. The Grand Architect of the Universe has received the following into His Presence:
