The International Dyslexia Association® (IDA) is an international organization that concerns itself with the complex issue of dyslexia. IDA membership consists of a variety of professionals in partnership with individuals with dyslexia and their families. They actively promote effective teaching approaches and intervention strategies for the educational management of dyslexia. The organization and its branches do not recommend or endorse any specific speaker, school, instructional program or remedial method. The Southwest Branch of The International Dyslexia Association® is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide information to the public regarding dyslexia and to support the rights of people with dyslexia so that they may receive appropriate education and lead fulfilling lives. The branch disseminates information, publishes a newsletter, provides referral services, and offers workshops, professional trainings, and conferences. The Branch’s geographical area covers all of New Mexico and the El Paso, Texas area.

The Reading Brain in a Digital Culture: Threats & Promises

Presenter: Maryanne Wolf, Ph.D

This presentation will describe how the brain learned to read and the implications of its plasticity for reading development--both  in different languages and on different mediums. The promise and the challenges of reading development within a digital culture will be emphasized. A new direction of research on global literacy will be discussed.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS

The Elephant in the Room: What We Overlook regarding Dyslexia

Presenter: Nancy Mather, Ph.D

The purpose of this session is to address specific issues (that are often overlooked or ignored) that af-fect the identification of students with dyslexia, as well as the provision of appropriate interventions, and to attempt to propose solutions. Examples of these issues include the misguided assumptions that: (a) an RTI process is sufficient for dyslexia identification; (b) the only cause of dyslexia is poor phonological awareness; (c) twice exceptional children do not exist; (d) teachers are adequately prepared to teach reading to students with dyslexia, and (e) dyslexia only affects reading and writing performance.

Professionals Conference - Saturday10:00 am – 11:30 am BREAK-OUT SESSIONS (SELECT ONE)

S1. Executive Functioning Skills: The Gateway to Learning

Presenter: Amy Miller, MA, MFA, CALP

Students with dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning differences often have weaknesses in executive functioning skills such as initiation, planning, prioritizing, organization, and other aspects of self-regulation. This session will define these executive functioning skills and explain why they are important for success in school and life.

Goal: To provide an overview of executive functioning skills and how they affect students’ performance in school.

Audience: Teachers, Administrators, Dyslexia Therapists, SLPs and related professionals

S2. Experience Dyslexia

Presenter: SWIDA Board Members

A simulation experience and sensitivity training in which participants rotate through learning stations that simulate various tasks encountered by individuals with dyslexia in the classroom or workplace.

* Limited space available -Due to the hands-on nature of this session, participation is capped at 70

Audience: Teachers, Administrators, Dyslexia Therapists, SLPs, Diagnosticians, Educational Psychologists, and related professionals

S3. Dyslexia: Its Prediction and Intervention

Presenters: Maryanne Wolf, Ph.D

This presentation will highlight some of the newest research in cognitive neuroscience on dyslexia before and after the child has begun to read. An important new set of studies on prediction with over a thousand kindergarten children indicate the presence of several different profiles that would require targeted intervention. Another set of studies of multi-component forms of intervention will be presented to exemplify intervention of the future.

Audience: Teachers, Administrators, Dyslexia Therapists, SLPs, Diagnosticians, Educational Psychologists, and related professionals

S4. Executive Functioning Skills: The Importance of Visualization and Internalized

Language in Learning and Life

Presenter: Amy Miller, MA, MFA, CALP

Students who demonstrate weaknesses in executive functioning skills often have deficits in two es-sential cognitive processes: visualization and internalized language. This session will explain the role of these two cognitive processes, demonstrate why they are important in learning and in life, and provide specific strategies for building the capacity for visualization and internalized language in chil-dren. Goal: To provide an in depth discussion of the role of visualization and internalized language in the development of executive functioning skills and in promoting characteristics such as “grit” and “growth mindset”.

Audience: Teachers, Administrators, Dyslexia Therapists, SLPs, and related professionals

S5. Use of the WJ-IV for the Identification of Dyslexia

Presenter: Nancy Mather, Ph.D

In this session, the presenter will explain the unique features of the Woodcock-Johnson IV (WJ-IV) that can help in the identification of dyslexia. The different discrepancy and variation procedures will be explained. The relevance and importance of assessing strengths and weaknesses in performance as part of a comprehensive evaluation will be discussed, as well as how the identification of specific processing deficits can contribute to an accurate diagnosis. A case study will be used to illustrate the main interpretive features.

Audience: Diagnosticians, Educational Psychologists, Dyslexia Therapists, SLPs, Teachers, Administrators

S6. Deep Reading Comprehension Processes

Presenter: Maryanne Wolf, Ph.D

The most essential aspect of reading is its ability to propel thought. This presentation will describe the cognitive and emotional processes that comprise the deep reading processes from background knowledge and inference to insight and novel thought. An important emphasis will be on the development of these deep reading processes in the young, particularly in a digital culture that can  either impede or promote these processes.

Audience: Teachers, Administrators, Dyslexia Therapists, SLPs, Diagnosticians, Educational Psychologists, and related professionals
