116WELCOME TO THE 31ST ANNUAL CANAL DAY
Today, we are celebrating 31 years of preservation and stewardship of the Schuylkill Canal and the three-mile area known as the Schuylkill Canal Park.
Thirty one years ago, a small group of passionate and determined volunteers set out to preserve the canal, recreate a 19th-century industrial history showcase highlighting the importance to our region’s economic development, and create an outdoor recreational resource. Over the years, countless volunteers for the Schuylkill Canal Association (SCA) have continued on this mission. The SCA’s current group of dedicated volunteers have joined together this year to present the 31st annual Canal Day for all to enjoy. These individuals have the same passion, perserverence and determination as those before them. The SCA’s ongoing efforts to preserve and maintain the canal area and continue in its stewardship could not happen without their help.
The Schuylkill Canal Park, owned by Montgomery County, is a special place. Visitors enjoy the natural beauty of the park, its woodlands, trails and waterways, all while learning of the history and heritage of the Schuylkill Navigation System. If you use the park to fish, boat, walk, run, hike or walk your dog, you benefit from the hard work of SCA volunteers—including Montgomery County Parks & Heritage Services.
Canal Day is the SCA’s biggest annual fundraiser, and the money generated at this event helps fund the SCA’s important work. Exelon Generation and Phoenixville Federal Bank & Trust are once again the main sponsors of this year’s celebration. The SCA is thankful for their support, as well as the support of our other sponsors, listed on page 11 of this program. Their generous donations are an investment in this community, as they help make this day full of family-oriented fun along the Schuylkill Canal possible. Please visit their establishments and thank them, so they know their support is appreciated.
Support the SCA by becoming a part of the stewardship and preservation of the canal as a member and/or volunteer. You’ll find a membership form on page 7; if you become a member at today’s event, you’ll get $5 worth of raffle tickets—that’s six chances at winning a prize (see page 11 for a list of possible prizes).
To all our volunteers and guests today: thank you for your support. Enjoy this year’s Canal Day!

The Schuylkill Canal Association (SCA) thanks the Philadelphia Rock Gym (PRG) for their continued support of the SCA’s efforts in preservation and stewardship of the Schuylkill Canal. Through PRG’s sponsorship of the Banff Mountain Film Festival, a premier outdoor enthusiasts’ event held in the greater Phoenixville area the first weekend of March each year, the SCA receives a generous donation from the proceeds of the festival as the non-profit beneficiary. In addition, PRG supports Canal Day each year by providing gift certificates and retail items that are used as prizes for the various competitive activities and for the Brown Bag Raffle held throughout the day. The SCA greatly appreciates the strong partnership formed with the Philadelphia Rock Gym and we are thankful for the support which provides much-needed funds to the Association.

10Become a member of the
Schuylkill Canal Association
The Schuylkill Canal Association is a non-profit organization established by area volunteers to preserve, maintain and restore Oakes Reach. It is one of only two remaining watered sections of the Schuylkill Navigation constructed along the river in the early 19th century. And it is the only one that has a fully operational lock within the entire Schuylkill River Valley. The SCA depends on the support and generosity of its local community to maintain the area. We welcome new members and are always looking for a helping hand to maintain and operate this beautiful park.
I wish to become a member of the Schuylkill Canal Association to support the ongoing operation and maintenance of the canal area as a historic and recreational
community asset.
