This week we feature Colorado Rocky Mountain School, located in Carbondale, Colorado. The college preparatory school of 160 students competes in Soccer and Skiing, both Nordic and Alpine. They feature outdoor sports, some of which are activity based, not for competition and those include Canoeing, Hiking, Kayaking , Rock Climbing and Snowboarding. In fact, the girls rock climbing team won the state competition in February. Their boys teams are known as the “Oysters” and the girls are the “Pearls”. Their esteemed list of alumni feature many author’s and activists and actor Oliver Platt. DID YOU KNOW? 68 teams find their way to the men’s NCAA tournament. 31 earn their way with a conference title and the other 37 are chosen by a committee. The tournament has enjoyed TV coverage since the year 1969. Leading champions are as follows: UCLA has won 11 times, Kentucky 7 and North Carolina and Indiana are tied for third with 5 titles a piece. Both Kentucky and North Carolina are #1 seeds this year, Indiana is a #4 seed and UCLA is staying home. WHAT IF I WERE TO TELL YOU... By now your brackets should be polished and ready to go. Each night you fall asleep with the TV on and each morning you wake to catch the scores you’ve missed. It is tournament time—NCAA, NIT, CIT, Men’s, Women’s, you can find a game on any channel whether you have DirecTV, Dish or gulp, regular cable. Post season basketball play is always an exciting time and this year especially has me wondering about a couple of what if’s. There is a jersey that hangs in Machovec Gymnasium, worn and retired long ago in honor of one of our greatest, Al Eberhard. Al graduated from Springville, played and graduated from the University of Missouri and was drafted in 1974 by the Detroit Pistons. You know the story. But did you know, this year’s NCAA men’s tournament features teams that two of his nephews play for? Tyler Zeller, a 7 foot senior for the North Carolina Tar Heels (you might have heard of them) and Cody Zeller, a 6’11” freshman for the Indiana Hoosiers both have Springville roots. Their uncle of course, but also their parents - both Lori and Steve Zeller are Oriole Legends themselves. And the Zeller boys have an older brother, Luke who was a 6’11” forward that played for Notre Dame and graduated in 2009. All three boys earned Indiana’s Mr. Basketball title. All three boys were McDonald’s All-American’s. And all three boys became part of elite collegiate programs. So here are my what if’s; What if the Zeller’s would have stayed put and had their boys attend Springville? Coach Merritt would have a sore neck, that’s what. What if the Tri-River’s conference had a 7 foot Oriole to contend with? Oriole Nation would go nuts, that’s what. What if the likes of Mike Brey, Roy Williams and Tom Crean found their way to Machovec to do a little recruiting? Oriole Pride would go crazy, that’s what. While all of these questions are fun to ponder, don’t get me wrong. We have plenty to be proud of and I wouldn’t change a thing. CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK

There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there, here’s your weekly dose of a U.S. high school with an out of the ordinary nick name.

THE FAMOUS AMONG US… OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT Now call me silly, but there are some people who walk among us, and they turn a head or two. And those heads are turned because they remind us of someone from time to time. This week let’s take a look at Springville teacher and coach, Mike Moran. Tell me, doesn’t he look like Australian Chef Curtis Stone? I mean—which one to the right is the “real” Mike Moran? Kind of creepy isn’t it?

LOOK OUT DES MOINES

Springville club volleyball will travel to Des Moines this weekend to test their skills against other teams in the 2012 Iowa Junior Regional Championship Tournament. Wells Fargo may never be the same. Aces, Side-out, chants and cheers – oh and spandex too. All under one roof. Let’s go O’s!

TRACK SEASON IS NEAR… Watch for upcoming season profiles, outlooks and schedules. Runners, long jumpers, shot putters and discus throwers are preparing for another season of Tri-Rivers competition. It all begins at the Cornell Indoor on Friday, March 23rd when both the girls and the boys will compete against conference teams in their inaugural meet.

It’s time to turn it up a notch as the regional tournament has arrived. Pictured from left to right; Leanna Mysak, Sid Hopkins and a team celebration in Monticello tournament play.
