THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS will once again be selling Christmas Cards. The proceeds this year will go to KOVAR, which supports the mentally disabled through its many local and national programs. We hope that you will consider helping to “Keep Christ in Christmas” through the purchasing and mailing of these beautiful Christmas cards. The Knights will have them available in the Commons this weekend and next. THE ANGEL TREE will be set up in the commons the weekend of November 28-29. Please

take an Angel off the tree, buy an age appropriate gift (no guns or violent toys please) and return it unwrapped to the church (gifts will be wrapped at a later date). OLPH has participated in this ministry with the Salem City Jail for a few years now. This program connects parents in jail with their children through the delivery of a Christmas gift. Pray for the families involved and think how you can brighten a child’s face and life this Christmas.

ROANOKE CATHOLIC SCHOOL invites you to start your Christmas season by attending a free performance of “THE NATIVITY PLAY”, featuring the school's new Drama Club, the RCS Celtic Singers, and Roanoke Catholic Dance. These performances will be held on Thursday, December 3, at 6 pm at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and on Friday, December 4, at 6 pm at St. Andrew's Church. For more information, contact Michael Hemphill: [email protected], 982-3532. THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS AND THE SQUIRES are sponsoring a float in the Salem Christmas Parade, which will be held on Friday, December 4. Parishioners of all ages are encouraged to assist in decorating the float and participating in this community event. Sign up in the commons at the bulletin board by the water fountain. We will need material and labor to transform our 40-foot trailer into a nativity scene. The theme is Keep Christ in Christmas. If you have any props and/or would like to help, call Dave Wyble at 529-4982. SAVE THE DATE for December 5 from 8am -11am. The OLPH Youth Group is sponsoring a breakfast with Santa. More information will follow. CHRISTMAS OUTING Are you 55 and older? Then come and join the Joy group and go to the Wolfahrt Hous dinner theatre in Wytheville to see “Christmas Spectacular” on Wednesday, December 9. Sign up in the Commons at the bulletin board; the bus leaves the parking lot at 10:30 am.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR! A valley-wide Advent Mission is planned for December 6-8, 2015 with Sr. Judith Gomila, MSC, of the Marianites of Holy Cross from New Orleans. The mission will be held at Roanoke and Salem area Catholic parishes with a focus on family, forgiveness and mercy. In addition to Sr. Judy’s presentations, the

mission will include an opportunity for participants to celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation and a valley-wide celebration of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and the start of the “Year of Mercy”. Look for more details to come in the

coming week!

THE FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING is, as Catholic feasts go, a relatively recent one. It was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925, to remind Catholics (and the world generally) that Jesus Christ is Lord of the Universe, both as God and as Man. Pius XI announced the feast in his encyclical Quas Primas, which was delivered on December 11, 1925. At the end of the encyclical, he declared that he expected three "blessings" to flow from the celebration of the feast: first, that "men will doubtless be reminded that the Church, founded by Christ as a perfect society, has a natural and inalienable right to perfect freedom and immunity from the power of the state"; second, that "Nations will be reminded by the annual celebration of this feast that not only private individuals but also rulers and princes are bound to give public honor and obedience to Christ"; and third, that "The faithful, moreover, by meditating upon these truths, will gain much strength and courage, enabling them to form their lives after the true Christian ideal."
