A Message from Rabbi FasmanRabbi Mark Fasman [email protected]

One of my favorite pictures was taken by a nurse-friend a few minutes after my son, David, was born. In the photo, I am holding him close to my face, which is radiating profound joy. I had just become an ancestor! I didn’t know anything about the newborn I was holding except that it was a boy and he was alive and breathing… and my descendant. But the moment wasn’t about me – it was about my son – my precious bundle of potential.

Early last month, on the same day, two individuals (each of whom had been president of one of our two legacy synagogues) made an appointment to speak with me. One wanted me to know that many members of Congregation A were feeling as though they had given up too much of their service and they were no longer comfortable with the Shabbat morning service. The other wanted me to know that many members of Congregation B were feeling as though they had given up too much of their service and were feeling alienated from the Shabbat morning service.

So, I guess we must being doing something right!

But seriously, we have to stop focusing on ourselves as ancestors and start loving our infant child, Kol Rinah. What should we do at High Holy Days? Whose melody do we use for Ha-yom, ha-yom, ha-yom…? How shall we do the hakafot? Will there be choir or not? In part, these questions will be resolved through compromise – there are, after all, two days of Rosh Hashanah. But for the most part, Cantor Melissa Cohen and I will decide what we think is best – knowing that half of the congregation may be disappointed, upset, angry, saddened or outraged at our choices.

That is the job of the professionals you have chosen to make those decisions.

In Deuteronomy, we read about the judges and officers who are appointed to insure justice in the community. The text refers to the judge asher yihye bayamim ha-heim – “who will be in charge at that time.” Our tradition insists that we must rely on those who are in a position of authority

at that particular time, even if they are not as great as those of previous generations. Only an authorized judge living in today’s world, in our particular circumstances, can understand how to apply the law today, and the same goes for religious leadership.

For better or for worse, you have chosen me to make those decisions for our newborn congregation. And the congregation has chosen officers and board members to make the administrative decisions that will shape the character of Kol Rinah and build a foundation for the future.

This Rosh Hashanah we celebrate not just the birthday of the world. This year we celebrate the birth of our congregation. Think of the potential! We are the loving parents – shame on us if we waste our energies arguing over which parent our infant most resembles. Kol Rinah will become what it will become – not because one parent “wins,” but because both parents invest our energies and resources and love in raising our child together.

As long as we are fair-minded in our actions, and as long as we remember what is truly important, we will, together, create a vibrant, sacred, Conservative Jewish community that sings to God b’kol rinah – with a voice of joyous song.

L’shana tovah u’metukah – may you be blessed with a good and sweet (and healthy) year.

Shanah Tovah!Welcome to Kol Rinah as we celebrate the completion of the year of our founding 5773.

We have much to celebrate!

As is custom preceding the High Holy Days, every member of Kol Rinah has received a letter asking for a High Holy Day pledge. Every member who has received "tickets" for the services can make a pledge by returning the ticket, with a turned down tab indicating the promised contribution, to a sealed box in the lobby area on Yom Kippur when leaving. Or make a pledge by phone, the secure donation page on the web site, mail or hand deliver to the Hanley building. REMINDER! All donations are tax deductible.

Receiving a contribution from every single member is the goal and 100% participation will be AMAZING! Remember it is the mitzvah

of giving, no matter the amount of the gift, anything from $1.80 to $18 million, that is really meaningful. Please give until your gift makes you feel good.

Besides the sense of satisfaction you will have by making a pledge, I promise that Kol Rinah will be a spiritual home for you that is a comfortable and proper religious place to pray.

Most importantly, your pledge is a gift that will provide for future generations, just as the visions and the gifts made by the founders of our legacy congregations erected the buildings in which we pray, learn, celebrate, find consolation and comfort.

I look forward to seeing you in shul.

L'Shanah Tovah

We had a successful Honey sale over the summer, selling over 120 jars. We benefitted from some last minute orders, just in time for free shipping. Thank you to all who ordered honey for this fund-raiser. It’s a win-win – Both our Sisterhood and ORT benefit from your orders.

Thank you to Mitchell and Janice Shenker for sponsoring a Sisterhood Kiddush on the joyous occasion of the baby naming of their first grandbaby, Elana Abigail Gottlieb. And Mazal tov to the proud parents Rachel and Russell Gottlieb.

Thank you to Don and Hedva Levy for sponsoring a Sisterhood Kiddush on the occasion of their son Jonah’s bar mitzvah; and to Omri and Juliane Praiss for sponsoring a Sisterhood Kiddush on the occasion of their daughter Lauren’s bat mitzvah.

I apologize for repeating myself, but anytime you choose to sponsor a Sisterhood Kiddush, you make a big impact on our ability to continue to give to the ECC, the USY, Jewish summer camp scholarships, Kol Rinah Religious School, the general operating funds of the Synagogue, as well as to maintain and update the kitchens. Please help us continue to give back.

Take the Challenge for the New Year 5774.

We are looking to forge a new Men's Club at Kol Rinah that fosters developing new meaningful relationships within and outside of our Kol Rinah community. We'd like to challenge all the men (and women) of Kol Rinah to increase the "Bayn's" of your existence, by that we mean your relationships (bayn - betweens in hebrew) at 9 levels (taken from Dr. Ron Wolfson's Relational Judaism). The intent will be to enhance your relationship with yourself, your family, friends, your Judaism, your community, the Jewish world, with Israel, with the world (Tikun Olam), and "between you and G-d: belief or disbelief; either way, a willingness to wrestle with the Divine". I strongly recommend you read Relational Judaism - I bought a copy (autographed) for our Men's Club. With this we'd like to increase our 3 B's: Belong, Believe and Behave (Thanks Rich G.)

We plan to have engaging programs throughout the year that will help you develop deeper and more personal, interpersonal and spiritual relationships.

Kol Rinah win's prestigious Torch award at FJMC national convention!

Kol Rinah won both a Club Quality Award and a coveted Torch Award for our Lag B'Omer program at the Federation of Jewish Men's Club Convention in July! We were one of only 4 congregations in the Midwest to win a Torch Award. Alan Schwartz and I had the pleasure of representing Kol Rinah and spending an outstanding 5 days with hundreds of men (and some women) from across the country. We brought back some exciting new programs which you will be hearing about. Here are some pictures from the convention.

Kol Rinah Religious SchoolAnita Kraus [email protected]

It’s September, finally, and with it are the High Holidays, lots of celebration and the beginning of the school year! By now you have (or should have) registered for childcare for your 0-5 year olds and registered for family and student programming for your school aged, middle or high school students as well. Once again, this year Rabbi Horwitz is leading a family service for all families with kids younger than middle school on day 1 of Rosh Hashanah, and on day 2 of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur he will lead a service for kids 2nd-5th grade. Leslie Gubitz, a wonderful song leader and cantorial soloist will be joining him. On day 2 of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Shelley and Jeff Dean will be once again lead Rhythm n’ Ruach for all of our younger kids and their parents. These services are a great way for families to participate in prayer and celebration in a meaningful, relaxed, fun way. Our Kadima and USY students will be engaged in a full-on participation service created by USYers and allowing for a meaningful experience. A family Kiddush will follow services on day 1 of Rosh Hashanah. We are also organizing community service projects for our youth and families to connect our Kol Rinah community with other organizations in the St. Louis area. I am very excited about our High Holiday programming this year. I hope you plan on joining us. If you have not registered, please

contact Anita, [email protected] or the Kol Rinah office.

September has a lot more to offer! We hope to see everyone on September 8th at Oak Knoll Park for our Tashlich singing service and on September 15th for Happy in the Hut to help decorate the sukkah. Both are a great ways to celebrate and see friends. For more information contact Anita, [email protected].

“Hot Cakes in the Hut” will kick off our school year on September 22nd. Based on last year’s feedback, our Sunday mornings will be 9:30-12:30. Also based on last year’s feedback, the morning will begin with Havdalah and announcements for students in Pre-K-5th grade. This year’s classes are designed a little differently. We will have a Pre-K class, K-1 class, 2-3 class and a 4-5 class. Our middle school (6th, 7th & 8th) grade students are participating in a 3 year Kesher (connection) program. This class is designed to connect middle schoolers socially and build Jewish identity through several interactive units of learning throughout the year as well as participating in community service projects. Kesher students continue their education into high school. Kol Rinah’s high school students have two opportunities to continue learning on their own terms. They either create learning groups to choose their

topics of study for the year and meet once a month as a group for discussion with the Rabbi or other community leaders to create their own learning program, or participate in JOLT (Jewish Opportunities and Learning for Teens, St. Louis’ community high school learning opportunity). JOLT allows students to not only meet other Jewish high school students from all over St. Louis but to also have a wide variety of Jewish learning opportunities.

Interested in a larger role in the religious school? We want to know! There are opportunities to work with students one on one, in a classroom situation or as a volunteer. We count on volunteers to help with marketing, creating ruach (spirit) and lots of details that can’t be done without you. Contact Anita, [email protected].

With the Jewish New Year and the start of school, everything seems fresh and new, and there is a great deal of anticipation for what we can achieve. I am looking forward to our first High Holidays as Kol Rinah. Our new merged community is officially one, and it will be wonderful to move forward with a renewed strength. I am excited to see families that we have not seen for a while and enjoy watching our children pray, learn, play, and socialize together.

If you have not informed us of your children’s participation in holiday programming and/or babysitting please do so immediately. We want to ensure the holidays are fun, meaningful, and safe for everyone and we need to have the correct amount of supplies and staff. Of course, Kol Rinah will have a variety of services and programming for children and families on both days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We will also have a family dinner prior to the Simchat Torah celebration. Dancing with the Torahs during the 7 Hakafot (which translates to

DorWays: Families & Young Members Jessica Wax [email protected]

‘to march around’) is a fun and meaningful celebration. Children look forward to the special treats they get after each Hakafah.

Kol Rinah received a generous grant for a Shabbat Rinah Family Retreat from the Gladys K. Crown Foundation honoring the memory of Shirlee Green, and the Jewish Federation’s Rich Fund. Our goals for the retreat are to build relationships between members of our new synagogue and allow each family the opportunity to explore the beauty of Shabbat as a community, as well as explore shared family values. A Shabbat family retreat will be a wonderful opportunity to learn, pray, play, eat, grow, and enjoy the beauty of Shabbat with their family and community. We will also have a variety of programs to help prepare and energize families for the retreat. As we move forward with the planning, we want to have the ideas and expertise of our members. If you are interested in serving on this exciting committee, please email me at [email protected]. Planning will begin after the High Holidays. Date and location TBD.

I look forward to seeing you during the holidays and all year long! If you have thoughts or ideas for programs you would like to see for young families, please let me know.

I wish you and your family a happy and healthy New Year!

B’Shalom,

Jessica Wax

A NEW NAME, A NEW START

At Kol Rinah ECC teacher training week we were very busy getting ready to kick off a great school year! Our staff was busy planning, cleaning, organizing, decorating, learning, and having fun.

Along with the new name for our synagogue/ECC the staff had fun giving our classrooms new names as well. They chose to name the classrooms after endangered animals. Throughout the year the children will learn about them, our environment, and ways that they can make a positive impact in our world.

The New Names are: Monkey, Owl, Sea Turtle, Panda, Koala, Penguin and Super Starfish.

Throughout these changes, one place you will see little change is in our wonderful teachers. The majority of our staff is returning

Nitzavim Introducing A NEW Parallel (traditional) Minyan for families.

The creation of parallel services is not an unprecedented innovation for either Kol Rinah or its legacy congregations. On almost any given Shabbat a year ago, a member household could have attended Shaare Zedek or BSKI and chosen from multiple services aimed at young children or older religious-school-aged children and their families. Shaare Zedek has also sponsored Shabbat drum and chanting services, and both synagogues have held learner’s services.

Over the past months of merged worship, Saturday morning service options at Kol Rinah have included not only the main (“traditional”) service but also Mifga Shabbat, Shabbat in the Alcove, Rhythm & Ruach, and Kidrash, each of which features varying degrees of lay leadership.

Multiple minyanim can enhance the overall health of a successful synagogue and lead to a renaissance in a struggling one. They can bring in new members and provide new pathways into a congregation, and at the same time they can provide opportunities to existing members ensuring retention. As long

as synagogue members work together, keep the community’s overall well-being in mind and are patient and seek consensus, multiple minyanim will make a synagogue the destination for everyone on Shabbat morning.

We are starting a new parallel minyan at Kol Rinah, "Nitzavim," which will offer a traditional lay-led service that is adult-oriented but child-friendly. ALL will be welcome to explore their own closeness to Jewish observance through a lay-led traditional service which begins with Pesukei d’Zimra and reunites with the main Kol Rinah service and any additional family/children’s offerings at Ein Keloheinu.

“Nitzavim,” our new service, proposes to provide an experience that will:

● empower our talented lay daveners and Torah/Haftarah readers while providing a friendly space for those interested in learning ritual skills;

● welcome families while appealing to adults seeking a traditional service for themselves and their children;

● provide an intimate encounter with G-d

and with Conservative Jewish prayer in a smaller, less majestic space than the main sanctuary;

● offer a recruitment and retention opportunity for prospective and current members who enjoy an intimate, lay-led service;

● contribute one more voice to the vibrant array of worship and community-building options that characterize Kol Rinah.

The Nitzavim services will be ritually similar to those in the main sanctuary -- potential differences may be the introduction to new melodies, including elements which are sometimes skipped in the main service, and planning a Torah discussion preceded by a short d’var rather than a formal sermon -- but their participatory, inclusive quality combined with their traditional format will offer something distinctively different from the existing worship options at Kol Rinah.

Nitzavim is being organized by a volunteer steering committee of participants including at least one member of the Kol Rinah Board. We recognize the rabbi of Kol Rinah as mara d’atra on ritual and halakhic questions.

Do you know or want to learn a Haftarah or read part of a Torah portion? We can help.

For scheduling, coaching or partnering, please call or e-mail either of our coordinators.

Torah & Haftarah Trope lessons available.

We have a new group learning to play mahjong at this time and we hope that others would enjoy playing with us as well as new learners. There have been some inquiries about an evening group .

If you are interested please contact Meir in the office (314.727.1747) and we will call you.

Our visits to the art museum were very successful as we had a wonderful docent

Bessie Zimbalist whose knowledge was incredible.

We hope to have some other tours to different museums in the future. We are open to suggestion from others.

We hope that the people attending the baseball game had a good time.

Please let us have your suggestions.

Welcome back from all your summer travels! Kol Rinah’s Youth Department hopes you’re having an easy transition back into the school year, and we’re here to help with the stress. We can’t wait for High Holidays this year and we’re excited to offer youth services to our middle and high school congregation members. There will be egalitarian youth-led full services on both days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. So how are youth services different than the main service? We will be offering ample opportunities for participation on whatever level is most comfortable for our different members. Opportunities to participate will range from non-speaking honors to reading Torah. We will also be breaking up our services with peer-led discussion and engagement activities guiding teens on reflections for the New Year. Finally, during the High Holidays we will be organizing community service projects that will connect Kol Rinah’s youth to St. Louis and will help those in need.

Let us know if you’ll be joining us for the High Holidays! We’d love to hear from you and make sure your teen is included in the celebration and kept up to date on all the fun activities we’ll be running for them. Teens are encouraged to share topics and articles they would like to see discussed during our High Holiday services and programming. Contact Tasha Kaminsky at [email protected] for more information and to get a full schedule.

If you would like to be involved in contributing to making this year the best year ever for Kol Rinah’s youth, please don’t hesitate to attend and/or contact us! We always want to hear from parents and youth about what they would like to see in our programming and what they are excited to share with us. If you would like to lend your voice to our youth department or receive regular updates on youth programming, please contact Tasha Kaminsky.
