Chapter 1 A Quick Guide to Operation

Since the function of the alarm box is only limited to send audible-visible alarm prompt to the equipment maintenance personnel upon receiving the alarm, it needs to be used together with the alarm console. When an alarm is generated, the basic operation procedures are shown as below:

1) After the alarm box received the alarm message, the alarm indicator of the corresponding severity level will flash and the speaker will generate voice alarm prompt to notify the maintenance personnel of its occurrence.

2) The maintenance personnel starts the alarm console to inquire the detailed information of the received alarm, such as its ID, name, module and parameter, and notes them down;

3) The maintenance personnel performs "stop the alarm tone" operation to the alarm box on the alarm console to stop the alarm tone (Please refer to Operation Manual or User Manual for Operation Console of relevant products for details.) If the alarm tone stops, please go directly to Step 5);

4) Step 3) can be skipped by pressing the "Alarm Confirmation" key on the panel of the alarm box to stop the alarm tone;

5) Refer to Maintenance Manual of the relevant products according to the detailed alarm information noted down and troubleshoot the alarm under its guidance.

If the alarm occurs frequently, you can turn off some of the alarm tones of low level by following the methods below:

1) At the initial state, the four "alarm tone on-off" indicators are always OFF;

2) Press the "alarm tone on-off" key once, and the "NOTIFICATION alarm tone on-off" indicator will turn ON and the rest

will be always OFF, which indicate the NOTIFICATION alarm tone is turned off;

3) Press the "alarm tone on-off" key for the second time. The "NOTIFICATION alarm tone on-off" indicator and the "COMMON alarm tone on-off" indicator will both be always ON and the rest will be always OFF, indicating that the alarm tones at COMMON and NOTIFICATION level are turned off;

4) Press the "alarm tone on-off" key for the third time. The "NOTIFICATION alarm tone on-off" indicator and the "COMMON alarm tone on-off" indicator and the "IMPORTANT alarm tone on-off" indicator are always ON and the other indicators are always OFF, which indicate the alarm tones at COMMON, NOTIFICATION and IMPORTANT levels are turned off;

5) Press the "alarm tone on-off" key for the fourth time. All the four indicators will be always OFF and return to the initial state. Repeat this process following the steps above.

The "alarm tone on-off" key is on the left bottom part of the front panel; and the four "alarm tone on-off" indicators are on the edge of the panel in parallel to the corresponding alarm level indicators. Top down the indicators are the "EMERGENCY alarm tone on-off" indicator, the "IMPORTANT alarm tone on-off" indicator, the "COMMON alarm tone on-off" indicator and the "NOTIFICATION alarm tone on-off" indicator, which are as shown in Figure 1-1.

Chapter 2 Product Overview

2.1 Purpose and Networking Mode

The alarm system is an inseparable part of the network platform. As a part of the alarm system, the alarm box provides audible and visible alarm information for the users. After having thoroughly heard users' suggestions on the design of the alarm box, Huawei made great improvement on the first generation alarm box such as the original CC11ALMZ Alarm Box. It introduced the new generation Universal Alarm Box characterized by more convenient utilization, more reasonable structure and more flexible networking mode.

Universal Alarm Box (also known as GM12ALMZ Alarm Box) is applicable to all the products of Huawei including products of switching, transmission, mobile communication, data communication, intelligent network and access network, etc. Furthermore, it's completely compatible with the first generation alarm box such as CC11ALMZ Alarm Box, i.e. users can replace the original alarm box with the Universal Alarm Box directly.

According to its actual usage, Universal Alarm Box has two networking modes: one mode is that the alarm box generates centralized alarms through the alarm console, and the other is that multiple network elements connect directly to the same alarm box.

The networking mode that the alarm box generates centralized alarms through the alarm console: The alarm information of all the network elements (One network element corresponds with one functional entity.) managed by the network management system is first sent to the network management server, where it will be gathered, analyzed and processed, and then it is sent to the alarm console, which transfers it to the alarm box. The alarm box then generates audible and visible alarm information. This mode is recommended for Huawei’s future alarm systems as is shown in Figure 2-1.

The networking mode that the multiple network elements connect to the same alarm box: multiple network elements connect to the same alarm box through their respective alarm serial ports (One alarm box can be connected to 5 network elements at most.), which will generate audible and visible alarm information as is shown in Figure 2-2.

Note: For the two networking modes (the networking mode of the centralized alarms and the networking mode that the multiple functional entities or modules connect to the same alarm box), the alarm box only provides audible and visible alarm information. For detailed alarm information one should consult Enquirer on the alarm console.

As is shown in Figure 2-1, when the alarm box generates centralized alarms through the alarm console, it is connected to the alarm console through an RS232 serial port. The maintenance and management of the alarm box is done by the alarm console. This mode is characterized by unified management and centralized monitoring, and it is applicable to the products adopting centralized alarm management.

Note: There is one variant for centralized alarm mode, which also connects the alarm box through the alarm console but can only generate alarms for one network element of a certain product. The equipment adopting this alarm networking mode includes M900/M1800 MSC V61 and so on.

As is shown in Figure 2-2, when multiple network elements are connected to the same alarm box, the alarm box communicates with the alarm boards (such as ALM, CHD) of some network elements through RS422 serial ports, and it communicates with the system boards of some network elements or BAM through RS232 serial port

of the other network elements. This networking mode is completely compatible with the former networking mode of CC11ALMZ Alarm Box connecting the network elements. Formerly, this networking mode requires that the multiple network elements be connected with multiple alarm boxes. Now a single alarm box is enough in this networking mode. For instance, for GSM system, if BSC, MSC and HLR are placed in the same equipment room, the alarm networking mode (the networking mode that multiple network elements connect to the same alarm box) as shown in Figure 2-3can be adopted.

Note: 1) The alarm board used in GSM system is GALM board, which is identical with the ALM board in its function and usage. The relevant contents about ALM board described in this Manual is also applicable to GALM board in GSM system. 2) BSC communicates with the alarm box through two serial ports, of which one is used for the alarm of BSC itself, and the other is used for the alarm of BTS controlled by BSC.

2.2 Functions and Features

Adopting open design concept, the Universal Alarm Box has powerful functions and is easily maintained. It has the following functions and features:

It has the ability to provide the following four levels of audible and visible alarm information in a real-time and accurate way: EMERGENCY, IMPORTANT, COMMON, and NOTIFICATION. The display of the alarm is visible, and the alarm voice is clear.

The coordinated use of the alarm box and the alarm console not only effectively makes use of the alarm console resource but also facilitates the users. The alarm box only provides the alarm level information, while the alarm console provides detailed alarm information; therefore, the resources of the alarm box and the alarm console are utilized most reasonably and effectively.

Flexible networking modes: It provides two networking modes according to the actual conditions: the networking mode of centralized alarms and the networking mode that multiple functional modules that connect to the same alarm box.

Powerful functions of the serial ports: There are 8 serial ports in the alarm box: 4 RS232 serial ports and 4 RS422 serial ports. A maximum of 5 serial ports can be provided to the external equipment to work simultaneously. The communication distance of RS232 serial

port reaches 80m and that of RS422 serial port reach 100m in normal state.

Alarm voice prompt in two languages "Chinese" and "English", And its volume can be adjusted manually. The IMPORTANT, COMMON and NOTIFICATION alarm tones can be turned off. To ensure normal operation of the system, EMERGENCY alarm tone cannot be turned off.

Functions of remote alarm and remote alarm tone control: By connecting with remote small sound box, the alarm box sends alarm information to the remote end real-time, a distance of 30m at most. Through the remote alarm tone switch, the alarm tone can be turned off or on. The remote alarm tone switch could be as far as 30m away from the alarm box. The combination of the two functions can meet users' need to operate and maintain the alarm box remotely.

It has a DY5 interface functioning like an electronic switch. When there is alarm in the alarm box, the electronic switch will be on. When there is not alarm in the alarm box, the electronic switch will be off. By this way, the Universal Alarm Box interconnects with the unified alarm system (The unified alarm system here refers to the alarm system which the operator uses to connect with the alarm boxes of various telecom equipment).

Simple fault locating method and convenient maintenance: The faults of the alarm box can be quickly and accurately located through the maintenance serial port.

Flexible power supply modes: Providing multiple power supply modes of AC 220V, AC 110V and DC -48V to meet various power supply requirements home and abroad.

The reliability, security and electromagnetic compatibility and other attributes of the product have all passed relevant tests such as environmental test, EMC, EMI, etc.

It has the characteristics of simple profile, visible display, small volume and simple installation.

Total compatibility with other alarm box interfaces of Huawei, which facilitates the upgrading and management of the alarm box.

2.3 Profile and Structure

The Universal Alarm Box adopts a box structure, and it is advanced in technology and reasonable in layout with thorough consideration of operability, maintainability and security. The profile of the alarm box is shown in Figure 2-4.

On the front of the Universal Alarm Box, there are mainly the audible and visible alarm information display (such as the four level alarm indicators and speaker) and operation buttons. On the side there are the power supply, interface sockets, etc.. Considering the security of the alarm box, the door of the box is equipped with a lock. Only the personnel with the keys can open the alarm box to perform operations inside the alarm box. All the keys are the same for the convenience of the maintenance personnel. The door of the alarm

box is removable for the convenience of installation and maintenance. All the external cables enter the box through the protective cable sheathing at the bottom of the box.

Chapter 3 System Structure

3.1 Overview

The Universal Alarm Box, which features flexible networking, easy installation and convenient operations and maintenance, can provide real-time audible and visible alarm information for various communication equipment of Huawei, such as equipment of switching, access network, transmission, wireless and data communication. The alarm box is mainly composed of control, power supply, display, interface, etc. The system structure is as shown in Figure 3-1.

3.2 The Control Part of the Alarm Box

Designed as the main control board, GM11ALMM board, which is the control part of the alarm box, performs the control over serial port communication, indicator and various interfaces to implement maintenance and management of the whole alarm box. The GM11ALMM board mainly consists of CPU, memory, logic control, serial port communication, and peripheral interface.

3.2.1 CPU and Memory Parts

As the core of the alarm box, CPU has the functions of serial port communication, interface monitoring and so on. The memory consists of Flash Memory and SRAM, the former of which stores the program of the alarm box, while the later provides room for program operation.

3.2.2 Communication Part of the Serial Port

The Universal Alarm Box has 8 serial ports: 4 RS232 serial ports (J4, J5, J6 and J7) and 4 RS422 serial ports (JT6, JT7, JT8, JT11). J4 occupies the serial port 1; J5 and JT6 share the serial port 2; J6 and JT7 share the serial port 3, JT8 occupies the serial port 4, and JT11 occupies the serial port 5. S21 and S22 of the DIP switch S2 on the main control board decide whether serial port 2 and serial port 3 use RS422 or RS232 to communicate with the outside. J7 is the RS232 standby serial port, which is reserved and not used for the time being. In the case that the alarm box needs more RS232 serial ports, normal communication of J7 can be completed by upgrading the alarm box software.

The alarm box adjusts the rate of each serial port to 4800bit/s or 19200bit/s automatically by using the method of automatic remote end rate detection.

The longest transmission distance of RS422 differential serial port is 100m at the communication rates mentioned above, and it is used to connect the RS422 differential interfaces on the boards such as ALM and CHD.

To RS232 differential serial port, the longest transmission distance is 80m at the communication rates mentioned above, and it is used to connect serial interfaces of the computers such as the alarm console and BAM.

To save space, RS232 serial port adopts RJ45 socket, while RS422 adopts standard 6-pin socket.

3.2.3 Logic Control Part

The logic control part is responsible for the control and coordination of the whole alarm box, and it implements functions such as decoding, control and status monitoring of the access addresses on the board and serial port conversion. The logic control part mainly consists of address decoding part, DIP switch part, communication status part, alarm level part, alarm level turning off part, version reporting part, and interruption part, etc.

3.2.4 Peripheral Interface

Peripheral interfaces include inter-board interface connected to the power supply board, control interface connected to the keys, indicators and speaker on the panel of the alarm box, and external interfaces connected to external equipment. For detailed information of the actual interfaces and connecting cables, please refer to the section of the internal connecting cables of the alarm box in Chapter 5 .

Board GM11ALMM also provides two potentiometers (RP1 and RP2) to adjust volume as are shown in Figure 3-2. They are used to control the volume of the alarm tone: RP1 is used to adjust the volume of the speaker and RP2 is used to adjust the volume of the remote small sound box. For detailed adjusting method, please refer to the section of volume setting of the alarm box in Chapter 5 .

As is shown in Figure 3-2, there is one small button on the right bottom part of GM11ALMM board, which is used to start resetting the hardware circuit so as to reset the system.

3.3 Power Supply Part of the Alarm Box

The power supply part provides two kinds of power supply interfaces of DC -48V and AC 220V/110V. While using -48V power supply, the alarm box can be connected directly to the DC power distribution cabinet or the Busbar of the product cabinet like switches. While using AC 220/110V power supply the alarm box can be connected directly to the Mains Supply. The 220/110V power supply interfaces share one external interface, which can be selected by the internal DIP switch.

The power supply demanded by the boards is +5V and +12V (+5V mainly serves as the working power supply for integrated circuit components on the main control board GM11ALMM such as CPU and logic components. +12V mainly serves as the power supply for the equipment such as the speaker and the alarm level indicators.). The power supply part needs to transform the power supply input of AC 220/110V or DC -48V into +5V and +12V DC output. The power supply part is designed as the power supply board GM11APWR separately, which structure is shown in Figure 3-3.

3.3.1 AC Part of GM11APWR

The AC part of GM11APWR is composed of transformer unit, rectifier part, and filter part. After 220V/110V AC is transformed to -48V power supply by the transformer part, it is rectified by the rectifier part and filtered by the filter part, and then it enters the DC part. To reduce the height of the power supply board, the transformer part is designed as an independent part connected to the GM11APWR through cables. In addition, the AC part also includes one DIP switch to select the input voltages 220V or 110V, which is also located outside the power supply board.

3.3.2 DC Part of GM11APWR

The DC part of GM11APWR is mainly composed of the soft start circuit part, DC-DC module part and filter part. The important function of the soft start circuit part is: It ensures the power supply close

slowly when the power supply is being powered on, in order to avoid the power supply's impact on the system during the course of powering-on. The function of the DC-DC module part is to transform -48V power supply into +12V and +5V power supply.

3.3.3 Power Supply Selection Part of GM11APWR

To avoid the -48V power supply transformed from the AC power supply and -48 DC power supply be connected to GM11APWR DC part simultaneously, GM11APWR adds one selection circuit. It compares the voltages of the power supply on both sides and selects the power supply with higher voltage to be connected to the DC part.

3.4 The Panel and External Interface of the Alarm Box

The panel and external interface of the alarm box are used for indicating alarms and connecting the relevant peripheral equipment. The following will only concentrate on the introduction of the functions of the various parts on the panel and interfaces. Detailed connecting cable mode will be described in Chapter 5.

3.4.1 The Front Panel of the Alarm Box

The front panel of the alarm box mainly consists of the "alarm tone on-off" indicator, the alarm level indicator, the serial port communication status indicator, the speaker, the "Alarm Confirmation" key and the "alarm tone on-off" key. The diagram of the front panel is shown is Figure 3-4.

I. The "alarm tone on-off" indicator

The "alarm tone on-off" indicator to display current on and off state of the alarm tone consists of 4 green indicators. Top down there are "EMERGENCY alarm tone on-off" indicator, "IMPORTANT alarm tone on-off" indicator "COMMON alarm tone on-off" indicator and "NOTIFICATION alarm tone on-off" indicator. If the indicator is ON, it signals that the alarm tone of the corresponding level is turned off. For the details of the "alarm tone on-off" indicator, please refer to the "Alarm Tone On/Off" section in Chapter 4 .

II. The alarm level indicator

The alarm level indicator is used to display the level of the current alarms, and it is composed of four color indicators of red, orange, yellow and green, which correspond with the four alarm levels of EMERGENCY alarm, IMPORTANT alarm, COMMON alarm and NOTIFICATION alarm respectively. When an alarm occurs, the corresponding indicator on the alarm box will flash (ON for 0.1 second and OFF for 0.1 second). For the details of the alarm level indicator, please refer to audible and visible alarm in Chapter 4 .

III. The serial port communication indicator

The serial port communication indicator consists of 5 green indicators, which displays the communication states of the 5 corresponding serial ports respectively. If the communication of one serial port of the alarm box is normal, and there is no new alarm received from it, the corresponding serial port communication indicator will flash slowly (once every second). If the communication of one serial port of the alarm box is normal, and there is new alarm received from it, the corresponding serial port communication indicator will flash fast (once every 0.2 second). If the serial port is not in use, its corresponding indicator will be always OFF. If the communication of the serial port is interrupted, its corresponding indicator will be always ON.

Note: New alarm refers to the alarm received from last time the "Alarm Confirmation" key is pressed to this time the "Alarm Confirmation" key is pressed.

IV. The speaker

The speaker is used to give out corresponding alarm tone of the current alarm level. For the details of it, please refer to the audible and visible alarm section in Chapter 4 .

V. Key of Alarm Confirmation

The key of Alarm Confirmation is used to stop the current alarm sounding and change the corresponding alarm indicator from flashing to always ON. Its functions are the same as those of Stopping Alarm Tone of the alarm console. For the detailed functions of the "Alarm Confirmation" key, please refer to the audible and visible alarm section in Chapter 4 .

VI. The "alarm tone on-off" key

The "alarm tone on-off" key is used to select the level of the alarm tone (including that sent to the remote sound box) sent. It is used in coordination with the alarm tone on-off indicator. For detailed functions of the "alarm tone on-off" key, please refer to the Alarm Tone On/Off section in Chapter 4 .

3.4.2 The Side Panel of the Alarm Box

The side panel of the alarm box includes the AC power receptacle, power switch, remote alarm small sound box interface, indicator test key and the lock. The diagram of the side panel is shown in Figure 3-5.

I. AC power receptacle

AC power receptacle is the standard single-phase 3-core plug used to connect AC 220V/110V power supply. It must be connected with the single-phase 3-core female socket. On the condition that it's not convenient for the alarm box to adopt -48V DC power supply, for instance, when the alarm box is connected to the alarm console in the remote control room, the alarm box generally adopts AC power supply.

II. Power switch

The alarm box uses this power switch whether it adopts AC power supply or DC power supply. However, the installation of the power switch is related to the power board interface and the types of the power supply, which needs to be noted during installation.

III. The remote alarm small sound box interface

The alarm box provides one interface to connect to the remote small sound box (1W active sound box with the matched resistance 8Ω or 16Ω). The interface supports the longest distance of 30 meters (Huawei doesn't provide the alarm small sound box. If the user wants to use this function, please equip it on your own.).

IV. The indicator test key

The indicator test key is used to detect all the indicators. Press this key and all the indicators including the alarm indicator, the alarm tone switch indicator and the serial port communication indicator, which shall be always ON until the key is pressed once more.

3.4.3 The Peripheral Interface

Except for the remote alarm small sound box interface, all the other peripherals need to be connected directly to the peripheral interfaces on the main control board GM11ALMM by using cables to get through the public cable outlet on the bottom of the alarm box. The interfaces include communication interface, DY5 interface and remote alarm control interface. The DC power cable should be connected to the DC power interface of the power supply board through one separate outlet on the bottom of the alarm box. For the usage of the peripheral interfaces, please refer to the relevant contents in Chapter 5 .

I. The communication interface

The communication interfaces mainly include two serial ports of RS232 and RS422, of which the former connects the alarm console and BAM, and the later connects the differential serial port on functional entities (ALM board, CHD board, etc.), and connects internally the serial communication part of the main control board.

II. The remote alarm control interface

The alarm box provides one interface to be connected to the remote alarm tone control switch so as to implement the function of turning off the alarm tone remotely. The interface supports the longest distance of 30 meters. Once an alarm tone occurs, the user can stop the sounding of the alarm through this switch. The function of the remote alarm control switch is the same as that of "Alarm Confirmation" key.

III. DY5 Interface

The alarm box is connected with the unified alarm system of the operator via DY5 interface. It works like an electronic switch. When there is alarm in the alarm box, the electronic switch will be on, thus a closed loop is formed between the alarm box and the unified alarm system. Details please refer to 4.4 DY5 Interface.

IV. The DC power interface

The DC power interface is one -48V DC power interface, which can be connected to the cabinet busbar of Huawei’s products through power cable. Generally speaking, the alarm box adopts this power supply mode.

Chapter 4 Introduction to System Function

To meet various requirements of different products and users to the alarm, the Universal Alarm Box provides diversified functions. The new alarm box not only makes enormous optimization over the original functions of CC11ALMZ alarm box, but also adds many new functions for the users' convenience. The important functions include audible and visible alarm, alarm confirmation /alarm tone on/off and DY5 interface, etc.

4.1 Audible and Visible Alarm

The functions of audible and visible alarm are: When the alarm box receives the alarm information sent by the host, the corresponding level indicators of the alarm box will flash or light up and the speaker or the remote alarm small sound box will sound according to the sounding mode of the corresponding level.

4.1.1 The Light Alarm

Upon receiving an alarm information, the alarm box will drive the corresponding alarm level indicators, and the red indicator denotes EMERGENCY alarm, the orange IMPORTANT alarm, the yellow COMMON alarm, and the green NOTIFICATION alarm. The alarm level indicators have three states, which are always OFF, always ON and flash respectively. The implications are shown as the following:

1) The alarm level indicator is always OFF: Implying that there is no such level alarm in the alarm box, or corresponding fault of such level alarms have already been cleared.

2) The alarm level indicator is always ON: Implying that there is such level alarm in the alarm box and corresponding fault has not been cleared. Or the person on duty has pressed the "Alarm

Confirmation" key or sent the "Stopping the Alarm Tone" command at the background after browsed the alarm information. Or no alarm of such level is received or the fault of such level alarms received has already been cleared after the above operations.

3) The alarm level indicator flashes: There are such level alarms received and the corresponding faults have not cleared yet from last time when the "Alarm Confirmation" key is pressed or the Stopping the Alarm Tone command is sent from the background to this time the "Alarm Confirmation "key is pressed or the Stopping the Alarm Tone command is sent from the alarm console. The alarm level indicator flashes once every 0.1 second.

4.1.2 The Sound Alarm

The volume of the alarm tone is controlled by the alarm tone control switch in the alarm box (It is in the middle of GM11ALMM board). The voice alarm is in Chinese and English, which can be selected through DIP switch S26 on the GM11ALMM board. When S26 is set ON, English is used as prompt; when S26 is set OFF, Mandarin is used as prompt.

The rule of sounding is that the alarm tone of an EMERGENCY or IMPORTANT alarm will keep on all the time until it is manually stopped or the fault is cleared, and that the alarm tone of a COMMON or NOTIFICATION alarm will keep on only for a fixed period of time (i.e. one minute) until it stops automatically or is stopped manually.

4.1.3 The Processing Principles of the Audible and Visible Alarm

The audible and visible alarms are handled according to the latest alarm principle and the highest alarm level principle.

The so-called latest alarm principle means that once a new alarm information is received, it will be displayed and sounded immediately no matter whether there is alarm before.

The so-called highest alarm level principle means that the alarm of the highest level will be displayed and sounded when the alarm box receives alarm information of several levels successively.

To be specific, when the alarm box receives one piece of alarm information, the alarm level indicator and sounding will be processed in the following way:

1) If no alarm occurs to the alarm box currently (All the alarm level indicators are always ON or OFF), the alarm box will produce the alarm tone of the level and drive the alarm indicator of the corresponding level to flash.

2) If the highest level of the current alarms is higher than that of the alarm just received, the corresponding alarm level indicator of the newly received alarm will flash and the corresponding alarm tone will be sounded. The states of other alarm level indicators remain unchanged, i.e., it is processed following the latest alarm principle. After 10 seconds, the alarm tone of the current highest level alarm will be sounded, and the flashing of the alarm level indicator remains unchanged, i.e., it is processed following the highest alarm level principle.

3) If the highest level of the current alarms is lower than that of the alarm just received, then the corresponding alarm level indicator of the alarm just received will flash and the corresponding alarm tone will be sounded. The states of the other alarm level indicators remain unchanged.

4) If the level of the current alarm is the same as that of the alarm just received, then the corresponding alarm level indicator of the alarm just received will flash again, and the corresponding alarm tone will be sounded.

4.1.4 The Processing Rules of the Recovery Alarm

The alarm level indicator and the alarm tone will be processed in the following way when the alarm box receives the recovery alarm:

1) When the corresponding faults of the recovery alarms received have all been cleared, the corresponding alarm level indicators will turn OFF. If the level is not the current sounding level, then the sound remains unchanged; otherwise the sounding level will be set anew according to the highest alarm level principle.

2) When there exist other alarms of the level and all the corresponding faults of the new alarms of the level have been cleared, the corresponding level indicator will change from flashing to always ON. If the level is not the current sounding level, then the sound remains unchanged; otherwise, the sounding level will be set anew according to the highest alarm level principle.

3) In other cases, the alarm level indicators and the alarm tones will not be changed.

4.1.5 Re-sent Alarm

As for the alarm information with the same contents received for several times, the alarm box can produce audible and visible alarms for several times. The alarm information received other than the first time is called re-sent alarm, but the alarm information is only saved once in the alarm box.

The re-sent alarm occurs because there is already one alarm of a certain level on a certain module of the equipment, and the alarm has already been sent to the alarm box. But for some reason, there occurs the same alarm of that level from that module, then the host re-sends the alarms to the alarm box.

Notes: 1) The "new alarm" described in this document refers to the alarm received from the "Alarm Confirmation" key is pressed last time before the "Alarm Confirmation" key is pressed this time. 2) When there is new alarm in the alarm box, the corresponding serial port indicator of the serial port receiving the new alarm will flash fast (once every 0.2 second) to indicate which serial port has received the new alarm.

4.2 Alarm Confirmation

When pressing the "Alarm Confirmation" key (including the remote confirmation switch) on the alarm box or having received the Stopping the Alarm Tone command sent from the host, it implies that the maintenance personnel has already browsed the detailed alarm information at the alarm console and the alarm box has made the following procession to the alarm level indicator and alarm tone. If the alarm tone is sounding, then it will be stopped; if the alarm level indicator is flashing, it will also be stopped and changed into always ON to indicate that there is still some fault to be cleared; if the there is no new alarm, it remains unchanged.

All the corresponding alarm level indicators of all the alarms that received from the "Alarm Confirmation" key is pressed last time to the "Alarm Confirmation" key is pressed this time will flash. Indicating that there are new alarms coming in, but for the alarm tone, the highest level will be sounded; after the "Alarm Confirmation" key is pressed, the speaker will stop sounding and all the alarm level indicators will stop flashing till a new alarm is received again. The alarm level indicator will flash and the alarm tone will sound according to the new alarm level.

4.3 Alarm Tone On/Off

Except the EMERGENCY alarm tone cannot be turned off, the three levels of alarm tones, EMERGENCY/COMMON/ NOTIFICATION, can be turned on/off by pressing the "alarm tone on-off" key. The alarm tone on/off state can be read from the ON or OFF state of the four indicators on the alarm box corresponding to the NOTIFICATION alarm tone on-off indicator, COMMON alarm tone on-off indicator, IMPORTANT alarm tone on-off indicator and EMERGENCY alarm tone on-off indicator. If the indicator is always ON, it indicates that the corresponding level alarm tone is turned off and it will not sound when the alarm of such level is received. If the indicator is always OFF, it indicates that the corresponding level alarm is turned on and the alarm tone of such level will be sounded when the alarm of such level is received. However, since the EMERGENCY alarm tone can't be turned off, the EMERGENCY alarm tone on-off indicator is always OFF.

The relationship between the "alarm tone on-off " key and the four "alarm tone on-off" indicators is shown as below: In the initial state, the four Alarm Tone On-off" indicators are always OFF. Press the "alarm tone on-off" key once, and the NOTIFICATION Alarm Tone On-off" indicator will be always ON and the rest will be always OFF, which indicates that the alarm tone of the NOTIFICATION level is turned off and it will not sound when the alarm box receives the NOTIFICATION level alarm, and the alarm tones of other levels will be given out as usual. Press the "alarm tone on-off" key for the second time, and the EMERGENCY Alarm Tone On-off indicator and COMMON Alarm Tone On-off indicator will be always ON. The rest will be always OFF, which indicates that the COMMON and NOTIFICATION level alarm tones are turned off, and it will not sound when the alarm box receives the NOTIFICATION or COMMON level alarm, and the alarm tones of other levels will be given out as usual. Press the Alarm Tone On-off key for a third time, and the NOTIFICATION Alarm Tone On-off indicator, the COMMON alarm tone on-off indicator and the IMPORTANT alarm tone on-off indicator will be always ON. The rest will be always OFF, which indicates that the alarm tones of the three levels of EMERGENCY, COMMON, and

NOTIFICATION are all turned off and it will not sound when the alarm box receive the alarm tones of the three levels. When the EMERGENCY alarm tone will be given out as usual, press the alarm tone on-off key for the fourth time, and the four indicators will all be always OFF and return to the initial state. Repeat this process following the above steps.

The flashing/lightening/ going out of the alarm level indicators are not affected by this function.

4.4 DY5 Interface

DY5 interface is used to connect the alarm box with the unified alarm system of the operator. It functions like an electronic switch. When there is alarm in the alarm box, the DY5 interface will be on, thus, a closed loop is formed between the alarm box and the unified alarm system. When there is no alarm in the alarm box, the electronic switch will be off. There are two DY5 interfaces (DY50 and DY51) installed on the main control board GM11ALMM.

4.4.1 Connection mode of DY5 Interface

The DY5 interface can be connected in two modes. In the first mode, all the alarm information will be sent via DY5. In the second mode, alarms are classified into key alarms and non-key alarms and sent to DY5.

The connection mode is implemented via setting the S23 and S24 of the DIP switch S2 on the main control board. When S23 is set to "ON" and S24 to "OFF", all the alarms will be sent to DY50 interface. That is, once alarm is generated, the unified alarm system corresponding to DY50 will be connected and send alarm.

When S23 is set to "OFF" and S24 to "ON", key alarms will be sent to DY50 interface and non-key alarms will be sent to DY51 interface. For specific connection and DIP switch setting, please refer to relevant content in Chapter 5 .

4.4.2 Alarm Sending Principles

The alarms are sent via DY5 interface according to the following rules.

First, determine the alarm sending mode according to the setting of DIP S23 and S24, i.e. determine to send all the alarms to DY50, or send key alarms and non-key alarms respectively to DY50 and DY51.

1) If the second mode is adopted, the alarm box will judge the level of the alarm received. When receiving a new alarm, the alarm box will put the corresponding DY5 interface connected, so that the unified alarm system could generate alarm.

2) After recording the detailed alarm information at the alarm console, the personnel on duty presses the "Alarm Confirmation" key on the alarm box to disconnect the DY5 interface, so that the recovery alarm could be generated.

3) Before pressing the "Alarm Confirmation" key, make sure that all the alarms received after the last pressing of the key are cleared. Otherwise, the DY5 interface should remain connected.

Note: The key alarms here include EMERGENCY alarms and IMPORTANT alarms. And the non-key alarms include COMMON alarms and NOTIFICATION alarms.

4.5 The Operation of the Alarm Console to the Alarm Box

4.5.1 Reporting the Version

The version displaying function is that when the alarm console sends query for the version of the alarm box command, all the version information of the Universal Alarm Box sent to the background will be displayed on the alarm console. The version information includes versions and sub-versions of the hardware, the software versions, pigeonholing time and logic versions, etc. For the time being, the alarm consoles of some products do not provide this function.

4.5.2 Resetting the Alarm Box

After receiving the "reset the alarm box" command sent from the alarm console, the alarm box will start the hardware resetting circuit to reset itself. The function is the same as that of the RESET button on the main control board.

4.5.3 Stopping the Alarm Tone

Upon receiving the stop the alarm tone command sent from the alarm console, the alarm box will start the Alarm Confirmation process. Its function is the same as that of the Alarm Confirmation key on the alarm box. For the processing details, please refer to the Alarm Confirmation section in this chapter.

Chapter 5 Installation of the Alarm Box

5.1 Installation Overview

The installation of the alarm box can be divided into steps of components installation, internal cables connection, box fixing, peripheral connecting cables and installation of the lock. Among the steps, the components installation and internal cables connection are completed before the alarm box leaves the factory.

5.2 Components Installation

The components that need to be installed inside the alarm box mainly include GM11ALMM main control board, GM11ALMM power supply board, the transformer and the AC 220/110V selecting DIP switch.

5.2.1 Main Control Board Installation

Place the front of the finished GM11ALMM board on the fixed position in the alarm box, and fix it accordingly with screws in a diameter of 3mm. The position numbers of the holes that need to be fixed with screws are M1, M3, M4, M6, M7 and M8, which correspond with the six holes on the alarm box body, L1, L2, L3, L4, L5 and L6 respectively. The positions of the holes are shown in Figure 5-1. When installing the screws, please make sure to align the positions of the holes to ensure that the board will be fixed firmly, and then the four bolts (H1, H2, H3, H4) on the box body get through the four holes (M9, M10, M12, M13) on the GM11ALMM board.

5.2.2 Power Supply Board Installation

After the GM11ALMM board is fixed, proceed with the installation of the GM11APWR power supply board, which is supported and fixed by the four bolts on the box body by getting through the four holes (M9, M10, M12, M13) on GM11ALMM. The fixation method goes like the following: First, place the front of the power supply board on the four upright bolts to make the four holes (P1, P2, P3, P4) on the power supply board correspond with the four holes (M9, M10, M12, M13) on the GM11ALMM board in sequence. Then fix the power supply board on the four bolts H1, H2, H3 and H4 with screws in diameter of 3mm.

5.2.3 Transformer Installation

Place the transformer on the positions of H5 and H6 (The input and output lines of the transformer should be close to the power supply board.) in the alarm box to make the holes on the transformer correspond with the holes on the alarm box. Then fix it with M3 self-driving screws.

5.2.4 AC Power Supply Selecting Switch Installation

Since the distribution cable of the AC power supply selecting switch is made combined with the distribution cable of the single-phase 3-core female socket, the single-phase 3-core female socket also needs to be installed when installing the AC power supply selecting switch. The installation procedures are:

1) Put the distribution cable of the AC power supply selecting switch through the hole for the installation of the single-phase 3-core female socket and put the connecting cable terminal and the selecting switch together in the alarm box;

2) Lock the single-phase 3-core female socket on the side of the body of the alarm box;

3) Then place the front of the selecting switch (from the top down the numbers 230 and 115 facing the front panel) on the H7 and H8 bolts, and make the installation holes of the selecting switch correspond with those of the bolts one by one;

4) Select the M3 self-driving screw to fix the selecting switch on the bolts;

5) Install the lead-out terminal (4PIN head) of the selecting switch on the JT2 position of the GM11APWR board.

5.2.5 Light Tube Installation

The Alarm Tone On-off indicator and the serial port communication indicator both lead out the light produced by the light emitting diode through the light tube. When installing the light tube, please align the hole of the light tube to the corresponding bolt on the inside of the front panel, and use the self-driving screw to fix it, so as to ensure the light tube is aligned with the corresponding light emitting diode.

5.3.1 Overview of the Internal Connection Cable in the Alarm Box

The internal connection cables in the alarm box refer to the cables connecting the main control board, the power supply board, and the panel of the alarm box, through which the alarm box becomes one integral functional entity that provides the function of audible and visible alarm. The connection cables include those connecting the main control board and the alarm indicators, the main control board and the keys, the main control board and the power supply board, the power supply board and the transformer and the

5.3.2 Connection Cables between the Main Control Board and the Alarm Indicators on the Panel

On the main control board, there is one 8PIN connector labeled JT5, which is connected to the four alarm level indicators respectively through one 8PIN connection cable (DKBA04200048ZP). On the 8PIN cable, there are labels denoting the corresponding connection (connected respectively with the four alarm level indicators of EMERGENCY, IMPORTANT, COMMON and NOTIFICATION). While connecting the cables, please note the sequence of the four indicators. From left to right, they are EMERGENCY, IMPORTANT, COMMON and NOTIFICATION. Each indicator should be connected to the two cables with corresponding labels on them. Since the alarm indicators support alternative current (AC), polarity of the connection cables does not need to be considered. The cabling diagram between the main control board and the alarm level indicators on the panel is shown in Figure 5-3.

5.3.3 Connection Cables between the Main Control Board and the Keys

The keys on the alarm box mainly are the alarm level on-off key (SELECT), "Alarm Confirmation" key (ENTER), test key (TEST), which are connected to connectors of the alarm box through 2PIN connection cables (DKBA04200041ZP, DKBA04200042ZP, DKBA04200049ZP) with the corresponding connection labels on them. Since these connection cables are connected to the key switches when leaving the factory, please pay attention to the installation procedure if reinstallation is required. Generally speaking, the installation procedures are:

1) First, please find the connection cables of the relevant position, and remove the knob and gasket from the corresponding key;

2) Then put the connection cables through from the front (SELECT key, ENTER key) or the side (TEST key);

3) After placing the key on the relevant position properly, put it in the gasket and then turn the knob. Turn the knob to fix the key firmly.

Before installing the connection cables of the keys, please check the labels on the main control board and make sure that the keys are installed on the right positions on the main control board. The SELECT key corresponds with the JT4 connector on the main control board; the ENTER key corresponds with the JT2 connector on the main control board; and the TEST key corresponds with the JT1 connector on the main control board. The detailed connection is shown in Figure 5-4 and Figure 5-5.

5.3.4 Connection Cables between the Main Control Board and the Speaker

The alarm tone on the main control board is transmitted by the speaker or the remote alarm sound box. Generally speaking, the alarm box provides two kinds of configurations: connecting two speakers to the panel of the alarm box, or connecting one speaker to the panel and another to remote alarm sound box in the rest room. If the user does not need the remote alarm sound box, the connector for the remote alarm sound box can be used to connect the speaker. In this way, two speakers are placed in the alarm box. The specific schematic connection diagram is shown in Figure 5-6. If the user needs to connect to both the remote alarm sound box and the speaker, then one connection cable is used to connect the earphone jack on the side panel, of which the schematic connection diagram is shown in Figure 5-7. On the main control board, the position to connect the speaker is labeled JT9 and the connection cable is labeled DKBA04200047ZP; on the main control board, the position to connect the earphone jack is labeled JT10 and the connection cable is labeled DKBA04200046ZP.

5.3.5 Connection Cables between the Main Control Board and the Power Supply Board

The main control board and the power supply board are connected through one 8PIN connection cable (DKBA04200043ZP). At each end of the connection cable, there is one 8PIN connector: one connects the connection sockets JT8 on the power supply board and the other connects the connection sockets JT14 on the main control board. The connection is very simple. Since the connection cable has interlock connectors, connection is done by simply plug into the corresponding connection socket. The corresponding connection diagram is as shown in Figure 5-8.

5.4 Setting the Alarm Box

The alarm box is hung on the wall, and it is often in a prominent place in the control room, which is 1.5m above the ground; When installing the alarm box, one should first drill four bottle-gourd shaped holes with a diameter of 6mm on the wall according to the sizes shown in Figure 5-9 that corresponds to the holes in the alarm box, and then insert one 6 %26 plastic expand tube into each holes, and screw four ST4.2%25 self-driving screws into the four tubes respectively. (The screws shouldn't be screwed in the wall completely, but with the heads sticking out for about 6mm.) Finally, one should hang the alarm box on the four self-driving screws and tighten these screws.

5.5 Alarm Box Peripherals Interface Connection

5.5.1 Alarm Box Communication Interface Connection

Universal Alarm Box has 8 serial ports: 4 RS232 serial ports (J4, J5, J6, J7) and 4 RS422 (JT6, JT7, JT8, JT11) serial ports. J4 occupies serial port No. 1, J5 and JT6 port No.2, J6 and JT7 port No.3, JT8 port No.4, and JT11 port No.5. S21 and S22 of DIP switch S2 on the main control board make the choice between RS422 and RS232 in the communication of serial port No.2 and No.3 with the other equipment. J7 is the standby serial port for RS232, currently reserved. Should the alarm box requires more RS232 serial ports, J7 can be used for communication by upgrading the software of the alarm box. The 8 serial ports are all set on the main control board.

RS232 serial port is often used for communication with BAMs, alarm consoles and PC s. When connected to DB25 port of the above mentioned computers, use connecting cable DKBA04060373ZP, when connected to DB9 port, use connecting cable DKBA04060374ZP. The connection of RS232 serial port cable is shown in Figure 5-10.

Notice: Products such as GSN, SGSN and GGSN also communicate with the alarm box through RS232 serial port. Please pay attention to the following matters when connecting the serial port cable: 1) Universal Alarm Box is not connected to BAM or the alarm console, but it is directly connected to RS232 serial port of the OMU of these products. 2) OMU works in active/standby groups, thus a pair of OMU requires two RS232 serial ports. 3) Since the mode of RS232 serial port on the system board is RJ45, the alarm box accessory serial port cables of such products should to be used.

RS422 serial port is often used for communication with the ALM board and is connected with the standard RS422 accessory interface cable of the equipment used. All the serial port cables are plugged into the public connecting slot on the bottom of the alarm box. For the single-mode BSC alarm box, the signal cable is plugged in socket JA19 at the bottom of ALM, for alarm boxes for other use, to pins 17-27 (8 pins kept vacant below). The connecting is shown in Figure 5-14.

If the alarm box is connected to two RS422 serial ports, serial port No.2 and No. 3 of the alarm box will be used for communication with RS422 serial port (i.e. Using JT6 and JT7), and others will be set null. The DIP switch setting is shown in Figure 5-16.

5.5.2 Connection of DY5 Interface

Currently, the DY5 interface can be connected in two modes. In the first mode, all the alarm information will be sent via DY5. In the second mode, alarms are classified into key alarms and non-key alarms and sent to DY5.

If the first mode is adopted, the S23 of the DIP switch S2 should be set to "ON", and S24 of the DIP switch S2 to "OFF". The DY50 interface (J1 connector) is directly connected with the corresponding DY5 alarm box with cable, as shown in Figure 5-19.

If the second mode is adopted, the S23 of the DIP switch S2 should be set to "OFF", and S24 of the DIP switch S2 to "ON". The DY50 interface (J1 connector) and DY51 interface (J1 connector) are connected with relevant DY5 cables respectively, as shown in Figure 5-20.

Note: In the first connection mode, the electronic switch of DY50 interface is located between PIN1 and PIN3. So do the electronic switches of DY50 interface and DY51 interface in the second connection mode. The electronic switch has no direction, i.e. it does not matter which terminal is current source, which one is GND. However, potential difference between them should be less than -48V. When connecting with the unified alarm system of the operator, adopt the connection mode flexibly according to the access request of the unified alarm system. 5.5.3 Connection of Remote Speaker and Remote Confirmation Key

On the side panel, a plug is provided for the remote speaker, to which the active speaker that the user prepares can be connected. The speaker is placed in the remote where monitoring is needed (but within 30m). The interface of the remote confirmation key on the alarm box is marked JT3. The connection mode is shown in Figure 5-21. The effective distance supported for the remote confirmation key currently is 30m, which should be noticed when connecting the cable.

5.5.4 Alarm Box Power Supply Connection

The alarm box supports two kinds of power supplies: DC -48V and AC 110/220V power supply.

When -48V DC power supply is not easily accessed, for instance, it is recommended that the alarm box adopt AC power supply when the alarm box is connected to an alarm console in the remote control room.

The alarm box can only use either DC or AC power supply, i.e. either -48V power supply or 110/220V AC power supply is connected to the alarm box.

The -48V DC power supply of the alarm box is generally led from the Busbar of the Switch, introduced from the private cable slot of the alarm box and runs through a special power supply cable to arrive at the power supply board to be connected to JT3 of GM11APWR. The power supply switch cable (DKBA04200044ZP) is connected to JT6 of the board GM11APWR. Please see Figure 5-22.

The alarm box supports 110V/220V AC power. On the right bottom corner of the alarm box, there is a three-phase socket. The corollary three-phase socket when introducing AC power supply. Connect the power supply cable led by the DIP switch, the power supply switch itself, and the input and output of the transformer respectively to JT2, JT9, JT1, and JT7 of the power supply board. The connection mode is shown in Figure 5-23.

5.6 Alarm Box Lock Installation

The alarm box can be locked with a locking device on the box, and the keys for all alarm boxes are the same. This is very convenient for the users in future operation and maintenance. Install the lock of an alarm box in the following procedure:

1) Remove the nuts and locking bar on the back of the lock;

2) Locate the spot in the alarm box where the lock is to be put as shown in Figure 3-5, and put the lock into the box in the front face of the hole;

3) Install the lock in the sequence of removing the components;

4) Tighten the nuts.

5.7 Setting Alarm Box Volume

The volume of the alarm tone is generally set according to the requirement of the user by installation personnel. The volume is adjusted by the potentiometers (RP1 and RP2) on the boards. RP1 is used to adjust the volume of the speaker connected to JT9. RP2 is used to adjust the volume of the remote small speaker connected to JT10. The volume can be adjusted as follows:

1) Turning up the volume

Use cross screwdriver to adjust RP1 or RP2 anti-clockwise, i.e. from the mark numbered 3 to numbered 1 on the potentiometer. In this way, the volume of the alarm tone will be turned up.

2) Turning down the volume

Use cross screwdriver to adjust RP1 or RP2 clockwise, i.e. from numbered 1 to numbered 3 on the potentiometer. In this way, the volume of the alarm tone will be turned down.

Chapter 6 Debugging of the Alarm Box

6.1 Alarm Box Debugging Conditions

As an alarm equipment, the alarm box needs to be debugged after it is installed. Some conditions should be met before the debugging.

I. Debugging conditions

All the connecting cables and units inside the alarm box are assembled.

The power supply cable of the alarm box is connected, and the DIP switch is set to the correct position.

The power supply switch is already connected to GM11APWR (the connecting cable is plugged in JT6 or JT9) according to the requirements of the power supply cable used, and it is disconnected.

There is at least one RS232 or RS422 serial port cable.

6.2 Test on the Indicator

Power on the alarm box. Press the key TEST on the face of the right side of the alarm box once, and the indicators of the four alarm levels, the five communication status and the four alarm level on/off indicators should be always turned ON. Press the key for another time, all the indicators (alarm level indicators, communication status indicators and alarm level on/off indicators) that are always ON return the original status. If the situation above doesn't occur, please check whether the alarm level and the test key are correctly connected or not.

6.3 Test on the RESET Key

Test on RESET key can be performed as soon as the boards have gone into normal operation. Press the RESET key of the main control board once, then all the flashing and light indicators will turn OFF and the alarm tone stops at the same time, but in a while the alarm box will start to operate normally. If the RESET key fails to work normally, the RESET key on the main control board may have been damaged.

6.4 Test on the Alarm Confirmation Key

In according to the networking diagram, a serial port of the alarm box should be connected with BAM or ALM board through the serial port communication cable so that there is alarm in the alarm box. Try to find out if the alarm box will produce audible and visible alarm of the corresponding level. If there is audible and visible alarm (The alarm tone sounds and the alarm level indicators flashes.), one should press the Alarm Confirmation key ENTER on the panel, and the alarm tone should stop and all the flashing alarm indicators should stop flashing. If nothing happens after the key is pressed, please check if the Alarm Confirmation key is connected correctly with reference to the corresponding installation process in Chapter 5 .

6.5 Test on Turning Off/On the Alarm Tone

Press the alarm tone on/off key SELECT and the lowest of the indicators should be ON, which indicate that the alarm tone of NOTIFICATION alarm is turned off. Press the key for another time, and the indicator above turns ON subsequently, indicating that the alarm tones of COMMON and NOTIFICATION alarm are turned off. Press the key for a third time, and the indicator is still ON subsequently, indicating that the alarm tones of IMPORTANT, COMMON and NOTIFICATION alarm are turned off. Press the key for a fourth time, and all these three indicators turn OFF, indicating that none of the alarm tones is turned off. Press SELECT once again, this cycle will repeat and the indictors turn ON from the bottom up

one after another. If nothing happens after SELECT is pressed, please check if the alarm tone on/off key is connected correctly with reference to the corresponding installation process in Chapter 5 .

For further test, alarm can be kept in the alarm box, and press SELECT to see if the alarm tones of the corresponding level can be turned off. Having confirmed the function is normal, one should restore the turned off alarm tones and see if the alarm tone of the same alarm sent by the communication will be sounded normally.

6.6 Test on DY5 Interface

For the first mode that all the alarms are sent via DY50 interface, when there is alarm in the alarm box, use multimeter to measure the resistance of the PIN1 and PIN3 of J1 connector. Check whether the resistance is 0 ohm or whether the multimeter sends "connected" indication.

For the second mode that key alarms (EMERGENCY alarm and IMPORTANT alarm) are sent via DY50 interface, and non-key alarms (COMMON alarm and NOTIFICATION alarm) are sent via DY51 interface, send a key alarm from BAM to the alarm box to check whether the PIN1 and PIN3 of DY50 interface are connected, and the PIN1 and PIN3 of DY51 interface are disconnected. If the former is connected, and the latter is disconnected, DY50 interface is normal. In the same way, send a non-key alarm to alarm box from BAM. If the former is disconnected and the latter is connected, the DY51 interface is normal.

If the interface is not normal, check the setting of DIP switches and cable connection.

6.7 Test on the Function Related to the Alarm Console

Operate the related functions of the alarm box one by one with reference to the operational descriptions in the User Interface Reference of various products, and observe whether the expected

results are achieved. For the detailed functional descriptions, please refer to OMC relevant function description in Chapter 4 .

6.8 Test on the Remote Speaker and the Confirmation Switch

Test on the remote speaker is similar to that of the speaker, except that the remote speaker is placed in the remote while the speaker is placed inside the alarm box. The remote speaker can be tested in several ways. Here are two examples:

1) Connect the Maintenance console to the alarm box with communication cable and send alarms to the alarm box to make it produce alarm.

2) Set up one DIP switch and specify one serial port for communication without connecting the communication cable. The alarm box will produce audible and visible alarm in 30 seconds due to the interruption of communication. In this case, if the remote speaker is connected to the alarm box through connecting cable, it will also give out EMERGENCY alarm tone.

Test on the remote confirmation key is similar to that of the alarm confirmation key. No further details will be given here because of its easy operations.

7.1 Configuration Classification of Alarm Box

The configuration of alarm box is closely associated with its networking mode. According to the difference in networking modes, the configuration of the alarm box can be classified into the following two types:

1) The alarm box that connects directly to the alarm console;

2) The alarm box that does not connect directly to the alarm console.

7.2 Configuration Principles Applied when the Alarm Box is Connected Directly to the Alarm Console

7.2.1 Products with the Alarm Box Connects Directly to the Alarm Console

Products with the alarm box directly connected to the alarm console can be classified into the following two types according to the difference in the alarm console:

I. Alarm console of particular products

This type of alarm console supports the connection of the alarm box to RS232 serial port of the client-end, but it can only implement the alarm for one NE (Network Element, one piece of communication equipment) of a particular product. For instance, the alarm box connected to the alarm console of M900/M1800 MSC V61 can only

implement the alarm for one piece of M900/M1800 MSC V61 equipment. Even this type of alarm console is connected to OMC and is placed on the remote end, the alarm box on one client-end can only implement the alarm for one network element of the product (i.e. near end alarm). It can't implement the centralized alarm for multiple network elements.

Products of this type of alarm console include M900/M1800 MSC V61.

Notice: In fact, products like M900/M1800 MSC V61 is connected to the alarm box by one independent small program (Server Gateway Tool), which, however, generally operates on the same computer as the alarm console program does.

II. Centralized alarm console of iManager network management series of products

This type of alarm console can be placed in both the near end or the remote equipment room to perform alarm for a certain NE that is connected to the Network Management System (NMS). It can be placed in the central maintenance equipment room to perform centralized alarm for various NEs connect to NMS. The centralized alarm console is also connected to the alarm box through RS232 serial port.

The series of iManager NMS products include N2000, M2000, etc.

7.2.2 Networking Configuration Applied when the Alarm Box is Connected Directly to the Alarm Console

When the alarm box can be connected directly to the alarm console through the serial port, only one alarm box is needed to be connected to the Alarm Console, which is either for the network

management center end or for each remote or near end. AC power supply is recommended since the operation and maintenance equipment such as the alarm box and the alarm console are placed in one equipment room. The 20m accessory serial port cable of the alarm box is sufficient for connecting the alarm box and the alarm console, however, to save trouble, it is still recommended that the actual length be measured before installing the alarm box.

No matter it is on the network management center end or the remote end, the configurations of the alarm box are basically the same. The list is as shown in Table 7-1.

The specific configurations for different networking modes are shown as below:

I. There is only near-end maintenance and no centralized maintenance

This configuration is common. The NMS server (or OMC server), the alarm console and the operation console are all placed in the maintenance room not far from the equipment room as shown in Figure 7-1. In this case, it's enough to install only one alarm box in the maintenance room. Connect the alarm box to the alarm console (client-end) with serial port cable and adopts 220V power supply. The power supply cable is only 6m long. Connector board is used if the cable length is insufficient. -48V power supply can also be used, but this way is not recommended.

I. Products connected to the alarm box through RS232 serial port

Some of these products are connected to the alarm boxes through RS232 serial port on their BAMs, such as M900/M1800 GMSC V35 equipment, while some others are connected directly through RS232 serial port on OMU such as SGSN and GGSN equipment.

Products that are connected to the alarm box through BAM include M900/M1800 GMSC V35, etc.

Products that are connected to the alarm box through OMU include SGSN, GSN, GGSN, etc.

Note: 1) M900/M1800 MSC V61 can also be connected to the alarm box through BAM, but this is not recommended. 2) Since the OMU of products such as SGSN and GGSN are configured in active/standby groups, each pair of the OMUs need to be connected to two RS232 serial ports.

II. Products that are connected to the alarm box through RS422 serial port

A product of this type is connected to the alarm box through the RS422 serial port of its alarm board. However, the actual position for this connection is on the backplane of the main control frame.

Products of this type include M900/M1800 MSC V33, HLR, BSC, etc.

Note: BSC uses two RS422 serial ports, one for BSC alarm and the other BTS alarm.

Universal Alarm Box has several RS232 and RS422 serial ports, and it supports the sharing of the alarm box by several pieces of equipment. However, the quantity and the type of the IMPORTANT equipment the alarm box can be connected to are limited for the corresponding limits on that of the serial ports. Universal Alarm Box is generally used for the products of Huawei, and it mainly consists of the main control board (GM11ALMM) and the power supply board (GM11APWR). To facilitate the users in analyzing and locating the faults, the possible faults of the alarm box are described below.

8.1 Failures in Serial Port Communication

8.1.1 Failures in Serial Port Communication

I. Symptom

The alarm box fails to communicate normally with other equipment at both serial port RS232 and serial port RS422 after it is powered on. (Communication status indicator of the alarm box turns always ON and the speaker gives out alarm tone of EMERGENCY alarm.).

II. Analysis

This kind of failure is rare, but if it does occur, one should check if:

1) DIP switch setting is wrong.

2) Serial port communication cable is out of work.

III. Elimination

1) Check DIP switch setting by referring to Appendix 4.

2) Check serial port communication cable and replace it if it is out of work;

3) Please contact the local Huawei’s engineer if no faults are found with the DIP switch and the communication cable.

8.1.2 Failures in RS232 Serial Ports Communication while no Failures in RS422 Serial Ports

I. Symptom

The alarm box fails to communicate normally with other equipment at RS232 serial port after it is powered on, while RS422 serial port is in its normal service.

II. Analysis

First, please check if the RS232 serial port cable used is intended for this port. RS232 serial port has its specific use. Cables that are not made specifically for circuit connection of this case can't be used here for the communication of the alarm box. Then test with a multi-meter to see if the serial port cable breaks anywhere. If so, the alarm box will fail in its communication.

RS232 serial port of the alarm box is used for connection to BAM or the alarm console. Please check carefully if the host or the OMC software supports an alarm box. If BAM or the alarm console supports an alarm box, and their configuration conforms to the kiting list of the alarm box, then the failure is not caused by software incompatibility.

III. Elimination

1) Check DIP switch setting by referring to Appendix 4;

2) Check if specified serial port cable is used. If no, please replace with the required cable in the kiting list;

3) Check if the serial port cable is broken anywhere. If so, please weld it at the breakpoint;

5) Check if the serial port of BAM or the alarm console is in normal service, and if the software configuration is consistent with the actual connections. If no, please modify them to make them consistent so that the alarm box can communicate normally.

8.1.3 Failure in RS422 Serial Ports Communication Failure but no failure in RS232 Serial Ports

I. Symptom

The alarm box fails to communicate with other equipment at serial port RS422 after it is powered on, while RS232 serial port is in its normal service.

II. Analysis

The RS422 serial ports of the alarm box are connected to the alarm boards such as ALM manufactured by Huawei to implement the differential communication between the alarm box and the host In differential communication mode, different networking mode adopt different DIP switch settings (mainly the difference in baud rate)

First, please check if the RS422 serial port cable used is intended for the alarm box. There are many RS422 serial port cables for an alarm box. Besides, serial port cables differ in their codes for different products. Please check the serial port cables to see if they match the particular product and conform to the kiting list. Test the connecting cable with a multi-meter to see if it breaks anywhere.

III. Eliminating

1) Check DIP switch by referring to Appendix 4.

2) Check if the serial port cables match with the alarm box. If no, please replace with the required cable in the kiting list;

3) Check if the serial port cable is broken anywhere. If so, please weld it at the breakpoints.

4) Check if ALM works normally. If not, replace it. If yes, check if the DIP switch setting on ALM is correct and set accordingly with reference to Appendix 6 at the end of this manual;

5) Check if the connection positions on the backplane are correct by referring to Appendix 5. If no, reset accordingly.

6) Check if the host or OMC software supports an alarm box. If no, please update the software accordingly.

8.1.4 Communication Failure of the First RS232 Serial Port When Used as Debugging Serial Port

I. Symptom

After the alarm box is powered on, RS232 serial port functions normally when it is used as an ordinary port, but it fails when used for debugging.

II. Analysis

RS232 functions normally when used as ordinary serial port, and fails when it is used for debugging. This means the serial port is not damaged. Most probably this failure is caused by the incorrect setting of DIP switch. It is also highly probable that the equipment on the opposite end doesn't support these functions.

III. Eliminating

1) Check the DIP switch setting by referring to Appendix 4.

8.2 Display Failure

8.2.1 Alarms of Alarm Level Indicators Disagree with that of Alarm Tones

I. Symptom

The flashing of the alarm level indicators on the panel of the alarm box is not consistent with that on the actual level of the alarm. For instance, when the alarm box receives an EMERGENCY alarm, the red indicator on the panel should be flashing (indicating an EMERGENCY alarm), but instead the green indicator flashes (indicating a NOTIFICATION), while the speaker gives out the alarm tone of an EMERGENCY alarm.

II. Analysis

This is caused by the inconsistency between alarm tone and the alarm level indicator. The alarm box always indicates the latest and the highest level ones (Refer to 4.1.3 for The Processing Principles of the Audible and Visible Alarm). Test the alarm box according to this feature of the alarm box. Send alarms to the alarm box through the alarm console of OMC, and observe if the alarm tone and the flashing of the alarm level indicators agree with one another.).

III. Eliminating

Check the cable connection of the four alarm level indicators to see if the connecting cables driving the alarm level indicators are

correctly connected Misconnection of these cables very often lead to the failure discussed above.

8.3 Failures in Alarm Tone Sounding

8.3.1 Alarm Indicator Flashes to Give of Alarm, but the Speaker Fails to Sound

I. Symptom

The alarm level indicator flashes, but the speaker fails to sound.

II. Analysis

The alarm level indicator flashes indicating that there are un-eliminated alarms in the alarm box. According to the principles of the alarm box in processing alarms, at least one kind of alarm tone should be sounding at that time (it could be the alarm that is currently indicated by the flashing indicator, or the most EMERGENCY or the latest alarm.). Yet no alarm tone is sounding. In this case, apparently the failure is caused by the alarm tone. The parts that relat to the alarm tone include voice chip, power amplification chip, speaker, etc. Check each of these parts with a multimeter to find out the faulty one.

III. Eliminating

1) Check if the cables connect the speaker and the little remote speaker are broken;

2) Check if the cables connect the speaker and the little remote speaker are correctly connected;

3) Check if the chip related to voice play is burned out;

4) Replace GM11ALMM with a new one and test its operation condition.

8.4 Failure in Keys and Switches

An alarm box has one power supply switch and five keys: confirmation key, test key, reset key, remote confirmation key and alarm level indicator on/off key respectively For thee keys, elasticity or other causes can give rise to problems like loose contact or no response. Below is a detailed description on the key failures.

8.4.1 Failures Caused by Confirmation Key

I. Symptom

There is alarm in the alarm box (alarm tone sounded and indicator flashing). The alarm box still indicates alarms after the confirmation key is pressed and no more alarm is sent to the alarm box.

II. Analysis

This failure often has something to do with the cable connection and the contact performance of the key.

III. Elimination

1) Check if the connecting cable of the confirmation key is broken. If yes, please weld at the breakpoints with an electric iron;

2) Check if the confirmation key is out of work. If yes, replace it;

3) Check the key and its connection cable to see if there is problem of dry joint or loose contact, and repair accordingly or replace the whole key and its connecting cable.

8.4.2 Test Key Failure

I. Analysis

There is alarm in the alarm box (alarm tone sounded and indicator flashing). After the test key is pressed, the indicators on the alarm box (alarm level indicators, communication status indicators, alarm level on/off indicators) are not lit all or ARE lit all, but not all the indicators lit turn OFF when the key is pressed once again.

II. Analysis

This failure often has something to do with the cable connection and the contact performance of the key.

III. Eliminating

1) Check if the connecting cable of the test key is broken. If yes, please weld at the breakpoints with electric iron;

2) Check if the test key is out of work. If yes, replace it; 3) Check the whole key and its connecting cable to see if there

is dry joint or loose contact, and repair accordingly or replace the whole key and its connecting cable.

8.4.3 Reset Key Failure Symptom

When the alarm box needs to be reset because of faults, it fails to reset after the rest key is pressed.

I. Analysis

The reset key is used in coordination with the WATCHDOG circuit. When the reset key is pressed, the WATCHDOG circuit will send one reset pulse to the CPU reset end to reset the CPU.

II. Eliminating

1) Check if the reset key on the board operates normally or if there is loose contracts. If yes replace the unit to eliminate the failure;

2) Check if WATCHDOG circuit operates normally.

8.4.4 Remote Confirmation Key Failure

I. Symptom

There is alarm in the alarm box (alarm tone sounded and indicator flashing). After the remote confirmation key is pressed and no more alarm is sent to the alarm box, the alarm box still indicates alarms

II. Analysis

This failure often has something to do with the cable connection and the contact performance of the key.

III. Eliminating

1) Check if the cable connecting the remote confirmation key is broken. If yes, please weld at the breakpoint with electric iron or replace the key attached with connecting cable;

2) Check if the remote confirmation key is out of work. If yes, please replace the switch of the key.

Notice: Currently the remote key supports only distance within 30m. If the distance exceeds 30m, the alarm box may fail to respond to the remote confirmation key. Please pay attention to this when connecting the cable.

8.4.5 Alarm Level On/Off Indicator Failure

I. Symptom

III. Eliminating

1) Check if the cable connecting the key is broken. If yes, please weld at the breakpoints with electric iron or replace the key attached with connecting cable;

2) Check if the key is out of work. If yes, please replace the switch of the key;

3) Check if the connecting cable and the corresponding connector are correct;

4) Check the connecting cable to see if there are connection failures.

8.4.6 Power Supply Switch Failure

I. Symptom

Close the power supply switch, but the indicators on the power supply fail to turn ON and the whole alarm box fails to operate. The indicators don't respond at all when tested with the test key.

II. Analysis

Currently the alarm box supports only one power supply switch, which can be used as either AC or DC power supply switch. If used as AC power supply switch, it is connected to JT6 on the power supply board; for DC power supply, to JT9.

III. Eliminating

1) Check if the switch is consistent with the corresponding connector according to the type of power supply (-48V DC or 220V/110V AC power supply). If not, correct the cable connecting in accordance to the analysis above;

2) Check if there are breaks for the power supply switch and the connecting cable. If yes, please replace the switch and its connecting cable.

8.5 Failure of Output and the Output Interface

8.5.1 Failure Related to DY5 Interface

I. Symptom

The alarm box has alarm, but the unified alarm system has no alarm.

II. Analysis

If DY5 alarm box should be able to indicate alarm, it should be connected by DY5 interface and connecting cables. If the DY5 alarm box is not faulty itself when it doesn't indicate alarm, then the failure often has something to do with the DY5 interface, the connecting cable and the setting of the corresponding DIP switch.

III. Eliminating

1) Check if the DIP switch setting is correct. Set the DIP switch according to the different networking modes;

2) Check if the cable connection of DY5 interface is correct, especially the correspondence between the electronic switch terminals and the cables. If it is not correct, prepare relevant cables and connect it again.

3) Check if the DY5 interface is faulty. If yes, please replace the DY5 interface or the main control board;

4) Check if there is anything wrong with the connecting cable of the DY5 interface. If yes, please replace it.

8.5.2 Main Control Board and Power Supply Interface Failure

I. Symptom

The indicator on the power supply board is lit, while the main control board fails to operate normally. Test with the test key, none of the indicators of the alarm box is lit, none of the communication status indicators flashes, and no alarm tones are sounded.

II. Analysis

The main control board is connected to the power supply board by one 8PIN cable, through which the latter provides +12V and +5V working voltage for the former. The main control board can't serve normally without working voltage. The above failure often has something to do with the connecting cable and its interface.

III. Eliminating

Check if there are breaks or connection failures on the 8PIN connecting cable; If yes, weld the corresponding connecting cable at the breakpoints with electric iron or replace it.

8.6 Power Supply Failure

8.6.1 Failure Caused by the Incorrect Setting of Power Supply DIP Switch

I. Symptom

When 220V power supply is introduced in the power supply, the fuse of the power supply board is blown and the whole alarm box fails to work.

II. Analysis

When the alarm box is connected to AC power supply, please be sure the DIP switch is correctly set. If 220V AC power supply is inputted externally, while the DIP switch is set for 110V power supply input, the fuse is likely to be burnt by the high current. When the 220V input is imposed. If DIP switch setting is correct and still the fuse is burnt, then please check carefully the power input of the alarm box to see if there is any short circuit.

III. Eliminating

1) First cut off the power supply and check if the AC power supply DIP switch setting is correct. If it doesn't conform to the input of the power supply, please set it correct.

2) Check if there is any short circuit at the input port of the power supply. If yes, please eliminate it;

3) Replace the power supply board.

8.6.2 Display Processing Module Failure Caused by Power Supply Failure

I. Symptom

When the alarm box is alarming, the indicators of alarm level and communication status are sometimes very dim, and sometimes normal.

II. Analysis

The working voltage of the alarm box is provided by the power supply board. If the working voltage decreases for some reason, the situation above will occur. The instability of the voltage is generally caused by lose contact of the connecting cable between the main control board and the power supply board or by the failure of the

power supply board. Please check carefully to see if the connection of the connecting cable is correct.

For the data circuit, when the voltage at the interface point is lower than -3V, the binary data is set "1", and data "0" is set when this voltage is higher than +3V. For the control and timing interface circuits, it is set "ON" when the voltage at the interface point is higher than +3Vand "OFF" when this voltage is lower than -3V. The range between +3V and -3V is stipulated as the jump area. The time for signals to pass through the jump area should not exceed 1ms, or should not exceed 3% of bit code element cycle. IV. Function description

The "Transmitted" and "Received" in the circuit name of DCE-DTE interface definitions are from the angle of DTE. Circuit 103 is the circuit through which DTE sends data to DCE, and is still called the Transmitted Data Circuit on DCE's side, though actually DCE receives data signals from this circuit. Similarly, Data is sent through Circuit 104from DCE to DTE.

The control circuit is set up to meet the requirements of implementing both the communication procedures and test procedures. DCD is used for monitoring communication circuits and the working state of DCE equipment. DSR is used for DCE to inform DTE whether DCE is in the working state (powered-on). DTR is used for DTE to inform DCE whether DTE is in the working state (powered-on). RTS and CTS are used to control the process of starting or ending the data transmission between DTE and DCE. If RTS is set "ON," it indicates that DTE requests to send data. When RTS is set "ON," if DCE agrees to the request of DTE, then CTS can be set "ON" to indicate positive response, so as to prepare DCE for receiving the data sent from DTE.

In the V.24 synchronous communication interface, it is required that the clock signal be provide by DCE and/or DTE. This signal synchronizes with the data circuit to ensure correct identification and receiving of the data. The time sequence of the clock and data in the interface circuit is shown in Figure A1-4.

In general, the V.24 interface does not use the secondary function, and the interface does not provide the blue secondary signal wire described in Table A1-4. The interface with the test function supported by the background need not provide the brown test signal wire described in Table A1-4.

V. V.24 procedure characteristics of the interface

V.24 interface procedure characteristics are defined in the ITU-T V.24 Recommendation. The V.24 interface in Huawei products is designed as the leased line interface. The control signal outputted by the interface is fixedly set "ON".

RS422 standard is only a standard of electrical characteristics without definition of the mechanical characteristics. It is adaptable to the long-distance high-speed communication among multiple sites. Its main features are as follows:

1) Balanced differential interface.

2) Support point to multi-point communication.

3) Can drive 10 loads.

4) Maximum rate is 10Mbit/s.

A1.3.1 The Power Supply Requirements of Alarm Box

I. AC power supply requirements

The alarm box can function directly in the AC power supply environment, i.e., it can function under both 220V and 110V power supplies.

If the alarm box adopts the remote control (the alarm box is not placed together with the switch equipment), it is able to function in this mode.

II. DC power supply requirements

The alarm box also can function in the DC power supply environment, and usually connects with the DC -48V power supply of the switch, with a working voltage range of -45V to -55V.

A1.3.2 Environmental Requirements

The alarm box is placed indoors and cannot be placed outdoors. Its normal working temperature range is 0 to 45 , and the humidity range is 10%RH to 95%RH.

Some products' communication with the alarm box is completed by the ALM board in the main control frame via the RS422 serial port. Currently the most commonly used are the two types of main control frames: CB01MCB and CB02MCB. In this section we provide a brief description of these two types of frames as the reference for installation and maintenance.

A5.1 Overview

The CB01MCB board is used as the backplane of C&C08 B main control frame, in which the MPU board, ALM board and etc. are located. It is one of the most important backplanes in the switch. CB02MCB is the upgraded version of CB01MCB, and it mainly optimizes the internal clock and main control bus of C&C08. At the same time, to differentiate the locations where BSC and BTS connect the alarm box, the serial port of the single module BSC used to connect the alarm box is leaded out to connect to JA19. The single module BSC thereby can directly connect with the alarm box from JA19, while other products such as BTS still connect with the alarm box from the original locations.

A5.2 Description of Main Control Frame Connection Cables

The ALM currently used by Huawei is located in the right bottom of the main control frame (observed from the front of the switch), and is near the PWC power supply board. To improve the signal quality, the CB01TBR board is inserted in the upper slot position of the ALM board at the back of the CB02MCB backplane. And the position on the CB02MCB that connects with the clock frame is also different from that of the CB01MCB board. In addition, a RS422 interface (JA19) is added for the communication between the single module BSC and the

alarm box. This results in that the position for the alarm box to connect with the single module BSC is different from that of other products. Therefore, when using connection cables, it is required to note the connection of the clock wires of the main control frame and the signal wires of the alarm box.

When the product clock frame is the old clock frame (CK2, CK3), there is one communication cable from the C&C08 B main control frame to the clock frame. For the CB01MCB board, the clock wire is inserted into the upper slot positions (1~8) of the ALM board on the back of the backplane, and the alarm box wire is inserted in the No. 19-26 pins (top down) of the lower slot positions, as shown in Appendix E-1. For the CB02MCB board, since CB01TBR is inserted in the upper slot position of the ALM board at the back of backplane, the clock wire (its code is 04024019) must be inserted into the No. 9-16 pins (top down) of the lower slot positions of the ALM board, and the ALM board software version must be 2101/3101 or 2102/3102. For the BTS alarm box, the alarm box wire (its code is 04024535) is inserted into the No. 17-24 pins (top down) of the lower slot positions of the ALM board. For the alarm box of single module BSC, the alarm box cable should be connected to JA19 (the cable code is 04026537), and other alarm boxes have the same connection slot positions as the BTS alarm box, as shown in Figure A5-2.

If the product clock frame is the new one (CKS), there are 2 communication cables from the C&C08 main control frame to the clock frame. When upgrading the main control frame from CB01MCB to CB02MCB, it is required to replace the communication cable connecting the upper slot serial port of ALM board and the clock frame, and the materiel code of the replacing cable is 04025158. The changes of slot positions where the cables are inserted after the replacement are shown in Figure A5-3 and Figure A5-4. The ALM board software version also needs to be upgraded to 2102/3102. A6.1 Board Function Description

CB01ALM0 has diversified usages and is mainly used in C&C08 B and AM32.

The ALM board in C&C08 B also connects with the C&C08 B host via the mailbox, and ALM can simultaneously connect with the alarm box (serial port). When C&C08 B functions as the standalone exchange, ALM is responsible for the communication (via serial port) with the SLT of the clock frame.

The ALM board in AM32 communicates with MCC via the 82525 HDLC link, and the communication mode complies with the general MTCP Link Layer protocols in AM32. And the mailbox is not used. It connects with the alarm box via the serial port.

In addition, ALM can detect the 8 switching variables and report them to the host. The secondary power supply alarm is provided starting from the 2101 and 3101 versions, and the environmental alarm (connecting with ESC and AMD) is also provided starting from the 2102 and 3102 versions, and it is able to drive the row/column alarm indicators according to the host command.
