A warm welcome to the ninth Charles Causley Festival. Starting from a tentative day-long festival in 2010 the festival has continued to flourish, with its twin aims of bringing Charles Causley’s poetry to the attention of a wider audience, and offering an opportunity to hear from and meet contemporary poets, writers and artists. The festival is run entirely by a team of volunteers, and we are grateful for support from businesses and other organisations in the town. In 2018 we are offering many more workshops and opportunities to participate in the festival, through art, poetry and stories for children and adults. Please join in, none of the workshops require any previous experience. However, if you prefer to sit and listen this is just fine, there is folk music, jazz, poetry, readings, talks, comedy which just require you to sit back, relax and enjoy.

Watercolour by Gwynngala artist Peg Jarvis

‘From the Underworld’ by Richard Sharland. Terre Verte Gallery.

Charles Causley was born in Launceston in 1917 and is acknowledged as one of the very finest English poets of the twentieth century. He lived in Launceston all his life, apart from six years in the Royal Navy.

After World War II, Charles Causley worked as a teacher in Launceston. He was a popular and admired figure and this admiration is evident in the great affection in which his memory is held today.

Charles Causley was also highly regarded by his fellow poets. Ted Hughes wrote: “Before I was made Poet Laureate, I was asked to name my choice of the best poet for the job. Without hesitation I named Charles Causley... a poet for whom the title might have been invented afresh.”

Charles Causley’s poetic reputation was worldwide and brought him many awards; among them The Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry and The Ingersoll/ TS Eliot Award. He was made a CBE in 1986 and a Royal Society of Literature ‘Companion of Literature’ in 2000. He received an Hon DLitt from the University of Exeter, where his archive is now held.

Charles Causley lived and worked at his house, Cyprus Well, on Ridgegrove Hill. Thanks to grants from Arts Council England and Cornwall Council the house has been renovated and modernised

where necessary, to become a venue for a wide-ranging writer in residence programme with associated community activities. Cyprus Well will be used for some events at this year’s Festival, offering an opportunity to experience the poet’s home very much as he lived there. Cyprus Well is owned by The Charles Causley Trust, and

once again the Trust is grateful to Arts Council England and Cornwall Council for further funding to start a new programme of work called Fuelling the Flame, commencing in March 2018, following the successful two year funding of ‘From Spark to Flame’. Roger McGough withLiTTLe MaCHiNe

Roger McGough’s new show with Walter, Steve and Chris of LiTTLe MaCHiNe features a fine selection of vintage, classic and surprising poems set to music. It’s a gala gig that’s making waves!

Roger McGoughHilarious and surreal, McGough is a poet of many voices. Menace and melancholy there may be, but with plenty of McGough’s characteristic wit and wordplay too. His latest book It Never Rains is a collection of new verses with drawings by the author. President of the Poetry Society, he has been honoured with a CBE for services to literature and the Freedom of the City of Liverpool. Roger presents the long-running Poetry Please on BBC Radio 4. His Molière adaptations travel far and wide with English Touring Theatre. Lily The Pink, the Aintree Iron, Scaffold, GRIMMS, The Mersey Sound with Adrian Henri

and Brian Patten - the beat goes on.

Luke Daniels - PolyphonSuch is Luke Daniels’ unquenchable inquisitiveness that, since his landmark solo statement What’s Here What’s Gone in 2014, he’s put down several more markers on the musical map. Revolve and Rotate had him transporting the 19th century’s closest thing to hi-fi, the giant steel discs of the polyphon, to modern transcription. All of this, as longtime admirers noted,

Talking Town: Charles Causley’s Launceston poems

Rosemary WaltersCharles Causley’s poems which are set in the context of the town of Launceston evoke a unique atmosphere only possible from the intimate knowledge of lifelong residence. In his various collections Causley foregrounds streets, buildings and locations in Launceston to articulate this sense of place. But the poems also blend history, imagination and experience to express his recurrent themes of survivor’s guilt, loss of innocence and the significance of the Christian narrative. Alongside these more serious themes are those poems which reflect his sense of fun and affectionate humour.

Rosemary Walters was born and grew up in Launceston attending Windmill County Primary School and Launceston College. Her parents grew up in the Launceston of the 20s and 30s alongside Charles Causley, and they remained lifelong friends of the poet. In retirement from teaching and lecturing in Canterbury where she now lives, Rosemary completed a Research MA on Causley’s poetry On The Border; she is now a PhD student, focusing on Causley’s poetry and the concept of a common culture.

Expelled from Sierra Leone by the Governor, he spent the rest of his life among the largely pioneering communities of Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio. There he was regarded as one of the finest preachers, evangelists and theological thinkers of his generation. A man

of high principle, he suffered for his commitment to emancipation. In later years he fought, and won, a battle against alcoholism.

Diggory Piper – the worst pirate ever

Little TrebigganChildren’s workshop and performance of Diggory Piper Pirate – Launceston’s very own pirate!

A humble Launceston lad, all he wanted was to play his lute but the lure of adventures on the high seas was too exciting to ignore. Join Diggory Piper as he takes to the seas in his ship The Sweepstake. Will he be victorious in assisting Queen Elizabeth I in her quest to vanquish the Spanish Armada or will his chronic sea sickness win over?

Little Trebiggan bring you this heart warming true story of an Elizabethan Robin Hood that will charm children from 3 upwards and their families.

The performance will be followed by a workshop, suitable for children aged 3+. Children will be able to create works of art using pieces of plastic or drift wood collected from our beautiful beaches. Participants are welcome to bring along small pieces that they have collected to use as well. The workshop will promote the ‘2 minute beach clean’ which is touched on in the performance of Diggory Piper – The Worst Pirate Ever.

Lisa TakahashiLinocut Workshop

Lisa is a very well respected artist whose recent exhibitions include the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, The New English Art Club, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Watercolour Society. Lisa specialises in making linocut prints. The technique involves carving a design into a tile of linoleum, ink is then rolled onto the uncut sections of lino on the tile, and then the inked up tile is put in a press with a piece of paper to make the printed image. Artists have produced linocuts for just over a hundred years, and the medium is popular thanks to its bold, graphic, handmade aesthetic.

In this session participants will be able to select from a number of images available that have been designed in response to a Causley poem, and transfer the image on to lino, prior to carving, inking and printing their very own postcard or greeting card. After the session the lino tiles can be taken away and used to make more prints at home.

Charles Causley – a life through his poems

An illustrated talk by Malcolm and Sylvia WrightCharles Causley famously said of his life – “it’s all in the poems”. In this talk Malcolm Wright, author of the short biography Charles Causley – A Universal Poet examines the aspects of Causley’s life which influenced the poems he wrote – his childhood, war experiences, work as a teacher, spiritual beliefs, his love of Cornwall and Launceston and the years of travel. Sylvia will read the poems, some well-known, some less so, and the talk will be illustrated with photographs, some of which have been rarely seen.

Ex-teacher Rob deals with such important topics as squid, the weather in Scotland, distressed furniture and tuk-tuks. Sweet ‘n’ Sour A team of four comedy performers thrust together as part of their community service. Guaranteed to entertain, delight, and horrify, Sweet ‘n’ Sour is a comedy improvisation group consisting of four top comedy performers from varying disciplines who combine their skills to create spontaneous humour of the very best. Through a series of games, not unlike the popular TV show, Whose Line is it Anyway? they incorporate audience suggestions into an array of scenes that range from high-end humorous wordplay to the blatantly absurd.

David Richey spent much of his childhood with his ear glued to the radio. Eventually, thanks to an industrial solvent and a friend called Ian, he had it removed. But not before he had heard enough to make him fall in love with the magic of both music and the humour of the spoken word. Dave co-founded The House of Fun Theatre with his wife Rachael. Now in its eighteenth year, it keeps him very busy. And when he’s not performing he’s travelling around the country teaching theatre skills to others.

Sam Morgan is a professional actor, comedy writer and character comedian. He trained at Chicago IO (improvisation), London and Bristol. Since 2011, he’s both directed and performed with the improv comedy group Improperly. Sam is also one half of Sam and Dave, a sketch comedy double act which has performed to great acclaim in the South West for over six years, and was lead writer and actor for BBC Radio Devon’s A Comic Review of the Year 2011. His credits include The Comic Strip Presents, Red Top and The Hunt For Tony Blair (2011), BBC Radio plays, numerous TV commercials, a series of award-winning short films and extensive theatre experience. He has worked with a lot of famous people but chooses not to drop names as he wants to work with them again one day!

Teresa Holcomb has been doing comedy for way too long - frankly she should be much funnier by now. An American in Cornwall, she regales tales from her past and her homeland, weaving this into clever quips concerning her move to Great Britain, her ideas on what’s different and why. Owl SenseMiriam DarlingtonOwl Sense is a captivating study of one of our most charismatic and elusive birds. Miriam Darlington’s journey begins with wild encounters in the British Isles, on the walks she takes with her teenage son Benji. From here, she seeks to identify every European species of owl, on a journey that will take her from southern Spain through France, Serbia and Finland, and to the frosted borders of the Arctic. In her watching and deep listening to owls in the natural world, Darlington cleaves myth from reality and brings the strangeness and magnificence of these creatures to life. Owl Sense was a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week in February 2018.

‘A beautiful book; wise and sharp-eared as its subject.’ Robert MacFarlane

Edge of the Depths: Poetry Workshop

Anne-Marie Fyfe’s first home was on the edge of the legendary Sea of Moyle on the Antrim Coast. While always engaged with the contemporary, with love, loss, life, and the journey, her writing has always echoed the rush of tide, the North Channel waves, the sounds of fishing boats, the shifting boundaries, real and metaphorical, between land and sea, between headland and deep.

Discover the poetic fascination of raging seas, of Force-9s and undercurrents, of tidal pull, hidden depths, unknown treasures, and uncertain homecomings; of the sense (literal, metaphorical, emotional...) of stepping off terra firma into the unknown, the elemental, the unfathomable. Not just poems about seaside days and safe harbours, but the real oceanic deal, the seven seas that cover two-thirds of our world’s surface.

Experience the creativity of Anne-Marie Fyfe’s workshop where tasks and talk, led exercises and sources of inspiration will fire your poetic imagination and have you producing real results in terms of finished poems and drafts (and a head fizzing with new ideas, new directions!) ... as well as time for read-back to, and positive feed-back from, energised fellow-poets.

Anne-Marie FyfeAnne-Marie Fyfe’s fifth poetry collection is House of Small Absences (Seren Books, 2015). Born in Cushendall, Co. Antrim, Ireland, Anne-Marie lives in London where she works as an arts organiser. She has run Coffee-House Poetry’s readings and classes at London’s leading live literature venue, the Troubadour, since 1997, is Poetry Co-ordinator for the annual John Hewitt International Summer School in Co Antrim Northern Ireland, and is a former chair of the UK’s Poetry Society.

THE CHARLES CAUSLEY TRUST YOUNG PEOPLE'S POETRY PRIZES 2018

Sponsored by Patrick Gale Often described as 'the greatest poet laureate we never had’, Charles Causley was a poet of place and people. He spent most of his writing life among the scenes of his childhood in and around the small Cornish town of Launceston where he was born. Known for clarity and a penchant for rhymes, his poems were popular with a huge and varied readership making him, in the words of his friend and fellow poet Ted Hughes, ‘one of the best-loved and most needed’ poets of the last 50 years.
