Notes: Three Irish swimmers (Christa Riggins, SamMaxwell and Amywren Miller) competed in the2008 NCAA Women's Swimming and DivingChampionships held at McCorkle Aquatics Pavilionin Columbus, Ohio.
Miller clocked in at 22.73 in the preliminary sessionof the 2008 NCAAs Swimming and DivingChampionships.That time gave the Irish sprinter a24th-place finish in the event. Riggins (23.16) was50th in the same event.
Riggins also represented Notre Dame in the 2007championships, competing in the 50 Free, 100 Free,200 Free, 200 Free Relay, 400 Free Relay, 800 FreeRelay, and 400 Medley Relay. Her highest finishwas a 13th setting in the 800 Free Relay (7:14.91),as she teamed with Katie Carroll, Megan Farrelland Ellen Johnson. She earned automatic bids intothe 2008 meet with a 22.89 in the 50 Free, 49.39 inthe 100 Free, and the fifth-seed in the 200 Free witha mark of 1:44.39.
With an A-cut time of 22.39 in the 50 Free, Millerregistered the nation's 17th-fastest time of the2007-08 season in that event. She was invited tocompete in the 100 Fly with a provisional time of54.88. She turned in one of the top-20 times in thenation in the 100 Free (49.10) to join the final field.
Maxwell's 1:01.68 in the 100 Breast gave her anautomatic bid, and her 2:12.76 in the 200 Breastranked 14th among collegiate swimmers thisseason.
Since the inception of the women's program at NotreDame, 21 individuals representing the Irish haveearned All-American honors at the NCAAs, withCarroll being the most recent with a seventh-placefinish in 2007 with a time of 4:12.37 in the 400 IM.At least one Irish swimmer has garnered All-American recognition in every season since 1996,with Carrie Nixon leading the pack by becoming a12-time honoree from 1999-2002. She posted thehighest finish of any Irish swimmer to compete inthe NCAAs by placing fourth in the 50 Free in2000.
Jeanine Blatt and Betsy Shadley were the program'sfirst All-Americans, claiming the honor in 1979when the Irish competed at the Division III level.
