EXPLANATION OF RATIOS

RATIOS, RATIOS, RATIOS, what are they and what do they tell me?

Ratios are a way to compare animals within the same group. For example, if you weigh your 20 bull calves on the same day and turn them into the association, they will calculate their adjusted weights to 205 days of age and then ratio them against each other with the average weight of all the bulls being a ratio of 100%. So, a bull with a weaning ratio of 105% is 5% above average for weaning weight within the group he was weighed with. Above average (100%) means more than average and below average (100%) means less than average.

That’s where our minus/plus genetics come in—ratios or birth weights below average are minus while weaning and yearling weights and ratios (and other traits like milk, scrotal, rib eye and marbling) above average are plus—minus where it is good and plus where it is good. Minus/Plus gives you the best of both genetic worlds and ratios identify animals that have done it in the real world.

Flying H Genetics has used ratios and minus/plus for generations to produce cattle that can do it all. Our genetic trends prove it works and our customers agree.

You have seen and read our thoughts about “THE SECRET OF FAT BULLS”. Studying this sale book and looking at the cattle will prove we walk the talk.

To be honest; eliminating the fat makes selling bulls harder. It would be so easy to just make them fat, add 150-200 pounds to their yearling weights, make the scrotals bigger, fill the holes with fat and make them look thicker.

But we can’t do it because it goes against our belief that excess fat is detrimental to both the bulls and our customers. Remember, fat bulls are developed to sell not to work. That is why we developed ROUGHAGE ‘N READY. This bull development system grows the bulls on roughages with a target of 3 pounds gain to allow us to sort and cull them on growth and fleshing ability without making them fat. If a bull gains 3 pounds from the day he is born, he will gain a total of 615 pounds to weaning and 1095 pounds to yearling. You must have 1200 pound yearling weights on the bulls you buy, just ad 160 pounds to the yearling weights listed in the catalog -- this paper fat is no different than real fat since neither changes the bulls genetics for growth. Add 160 pounds to each bulls yearling weight listed in the catalog and WOW, every bull will have 1200+ yearling weights. These paper pounds are equivalent to 1 pound per day more gain from weaning to yearling and a lot of corn. Since we don’t creep feed and growth to weaning is so dependant on rain and grass, the target gain for bulls developed with ROUGHAGE ‘N READY will produce most yearling weights between 1000-1100 pounds. Those weights under this system demonstrate plenty of growth to produce calves that pay the bills and heifers that make it in the real world.

If you must have 1200 pound yearling weights on the bulls you buy, just add 160 pounds of paper fat—it’s no different than real fat since neither changes the bulls genetics for growth—by adding 160 pounds to each bulls weights listed in this book and WOW, every bull listed will have 1200+ pound yearling weights. These paper pounds are the equivalent of 1 pound more gain per day from weaning to yearling and a lot of corn.

Buying bulls that are real and not fat does take effort to retrain the eye. Just remember, they’ll look better after you get them home and they’ll work harder and last longer.

4 Flying H Genetics

Flying H Genetics is retaining 50% semen interest in every bull sold. The buyer receives 100% possession and resale or salvage value and 50% semen interest. - IfFlyingHGeneticschoosestoutilizetheirsemeninterest,theywillcoordinatewiththeownerandpayallexpensesfortheirsemen.Ifasemensalesmarketdevelopsonabull,FlyingHGeneticswillworkwiththeownertopromoteandsellsemensplittingtheexpensesandincome50/50.Again,thissemenreservedoesnotaffectthebuyer’sabilitytohavefulluseofandreceivefullsalepriceforthebullwiththesemenreservefollowingthebulltothenewowner.Weestimatethatthismayonlyaffect1or2bullsperyear.Ifyouhavequestions,pleasevisitwithKyleorDickatanytime.

How Do I Use FHG’s DNA Value Indexes?In our endless goal to provide our customers with the best service available, FHG never stops searching for ways to make bull selection easier & to make the data we collect more valuable. Therefore, we have worked side-by-side with Igenity to design the first ever Profit Driven Dollar Value Indexes that are derived from cutting edge DNA analysis. The indexes that appear in this catalog have been designed using current economic conditions & matching those to traits that are relevant to the profitability of today’s cattlemen. We took into consideration various production costs, such as feed, cow maintenance for a year, the value of a weaned calf, price of beef, etc. These factors and many more are linked directly to your profitability by important genetic traits that can be identified through the power of DNA. An animal’s DNA profile can now be expressed in a language that is easier to understand and more relevant to your bottom line. Let’s take a look!

A Maternal Value IndexThis index focuses on the maternal strength a sire will pass on to his daughters by identifying individuals that are genetically superior for maternal calving ease, fertility, stayablity, & docility. It gives an estimate of the value of her lifetime productivity based on the positive traits her sire possesses. • For example, a cow with a profit value index of $487 will generate $100 more profit in her lifetime than a cow with a profit value index of $387. Now, multiply that times the number of additional daughters that bull may sire in his lifetime and you can begin to see the financial benefit of this index.

B Carcass Value Index:This index focuses on the genetics an individual possesses that may be more profitable if you feed cattle & sell on a grid. Cattle that are superior for this index possess both the genetics for increased marbling & optimum fat thickness (Excessively fat cattle will be discounted in this index). Therefore, they should be genetically equipped to produce calves for a 70/70 target; meaning, 70% choice, 70% yield grade 1 & 2s. • Let’s take a look at two examples. Bull A’s index score is $31.72. Bull B’s index score is $21.72. You can derive that Bull A’s calves should be worth a $10/head premium on the grid versus Bull B’s. Therefore, if Bull A should sire 100 calves over his lifetime that equates to a $1000 carcass premium advantage over the same number of calves sired by Bull B.

C Profit at Weaning Index:This index was generated specifically for the cowman that sells his calves at weaning. We have struggled for quite some time to come up with the “perfect” tool that matches the goals of most of our bull customers. The profit at weaning index was created to reflect the two factors that equate to more pounds from your pastures than any other that can be measured genetically---muscle & growth. • Consider this---Bull A scores $108 value; Bull B scores a $58 value. Bull A can be expected to pass on genes that should produce calves with $50/hd improvement over Bull B at weaning. Now, multiply that times the number of calves he sires in a lifetime (70 – 100) - Bull A could generate a $5000 advantage!

CLAIMSAllclaimsfordeathorinjurymustbereportedtoFlyingHGeneticswithin24hoursofdiscoveryandacompletediagnosisbyalicensedveterinarianmustbereported.

INJUREDIftheinjuryisnotlifethreateningorpermanentandthebullcanbereturnedtoserviceFlyingHGeneticswillworkwiththecustomertosupplyareplacementbulltouseatnocost,untiltheoriginalbullcanbereturnedtoservice.

LOSS DUE TO INJURYIftheinjuryispermanentandpreventsthebullfromreturningtoservice,FlyingHGeneticswillsupplyareplacementbullasclosetotheoriginalbullstypeandqualityaspossibletocompletethefirstbreedingseason.

AttheendofthebreedingseasonthecustomercankeepthebullasthereplacementbullasfulfillmentofthiswarrantyorreturnhimtoFlyingHGeneticsandreceivecreditonareplacementinnextyearssale.Thecreditwillequalthepriceoftheoriginalbullminussalvagevalueifanyfromtheoriginalbull.Thecustomeragreestoprovidehumanecareandobtainmaximumsalvagevaluefromtheinjuredbull.Thisguaranteesthecustomerabulltogettheircowsbredandfullcompensationforthepurchasepriceofthebullthroughareplacementtheygettopickandprice.
