ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Thanks to all Year 9 and 10 students who have participated in such a studious and dedicated manner this week. Your behaviour and application has been fantastic. The benefit to you might not be realised now, however if you continue to refine your exam preparation processes and use of time in exams you will see much better results. Thank you for rising to the challenge this week. We believe in you. Our Year 10 students continue on to their step up sessions next week. Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th December are planned for introductions to your Year 11 subjects. Please make sure you are there ready to go. Your teachers are planning to ensure you are prepared for Year 11 in 2018. All students will have a received a timetable. Term end dates for the Secondary School are:

Wednesday December 6: Year 10 classes end.

Monday 18 December: Activities Day

Wednesday 20 December: Final Assemblies and 7-9 last day.

Next week our Bands program gets into full swing. Thank you to Graeme Galbraith and all staff who have a supported the Bands program this year. Having programs such as this enables engagement and learning in a different context, stretching student capacity and helping them grow. We look forward to hearing the fruits of 10 months’ work (particularly the staff band). Until next week… Regards, DAN WALKER 7-12 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Assembly Mrs Poustie’s class of Preps did a fantastic job on Friday, despite the PA not working. The students were confident and supportive of each other. Well done! I want to thank all the parents who came along and supported their children. It is always nice to have parents be part of our school and I know our staff and students appreciate the time you give up when possible. Thank you.

Kinder-School Transition The kindergarten children visited the Prep-One classrooms on Monday and worked alongside our current Prep students to complete a range of classroom activities. Both Mrs Krueger and Mrs Poustie were very impressed with the leadership our students displayed in supporting the kinder children. Next Thursday (7th December) our kinder families are welcome to attend a BBQ dinner and information session titled “the Journey Begins”.

State-wide Orientation Day On Tuesday 12th December, all students across the P-12 school will move into their year level and classes, as they will be in 2018. This means we will farewell our Year 6s for the day as they move into Year 7 and welcome our kinder students for their first whole day with us. All other students will move into their classes of next year and spend the day with their 2018 teacher, with the exception of our new staff.

2018 Teachers and P-6 Class lists Next week, a letter will go home to each family informing them of the teachers for 2018 and the class lists. Staff have worked very hard to ensure they are meeting the needs of each student, both on an academic and welfare level. We want to be as transparent as possible with our decisions and if you have any concerns, I encourage you to speak with me. I will also send a message via Compass to let you know when I have released this information.

Day Structure The trial of new bell times last week was very worthwhile. Student feedback was that they liked the one hour sessions but hated eating lunch straight after the recess break. Staff are now looking at different options for next year, given we also need to meet the face-to-face hours as stated in the AEU agreement. It is hoped that I will be able to give you more detail next week.

Bike-Ed The Year 5/6s have started their two week intensive Bike Education Program. Students are learning the correct techniques of scanning, signalling, changing gears and the road safety. The program will culminate with the annual bike ride to Peterborough and back on Friday 8th December. If you are a keen bike rider and would like to be a volunteer parent on the day, please contact Mr Venn.

Year 4 Camp The Year 4s departed this morning for their 3 day urban experience in Melbourne. Students will be visiting the Shrine, the Old Melbourne Gaol, the Zoo, the MCG Sports Museum, IMAX and Science Works. I am sure the students will have a fabulous time and they will have plenty of stories to share when they return. They are at the ACMI – TV and moving imagery. They are standing in front of the Mad Max car.

Made it to the Shrine. Mrs Berry reported it is very hot in Melbourne today.

Our year 10 history students were given a wonderful opportunity when they were visited by two Vietnam War veterans as part of their studies last Wednesday. Robert and Sandy came prepared with a huge array of stories, artefacts, memorabilia and models. Students were invited to take a closer look at the display and took the time to chat with our visitors after their entertaining presentation. Australia’s military involvement in the Vietnam War was the longest in duration of any war in our history. It lasted from August 1962 until May 1975. Our commitment consisted predominantly of army personnel with almost 60,000 Australians serving in Vietnam. Having two of these speak to us with a first-hand account was extremely valuable. A big thank you to our visitors travelling from Ballarat on a very hot day, and to Mrs Deppeler for the organisation of this special event. Denise Murray, Humanities Coordinator

Artisan market On Saturday the school was part of the very successful Timboon Artisan Festival. We sold a range of our lavender products and sold considerable amounts of everything. In fact we sold out of bottled lavender water. We were amazed to discover even more uses for lavender and made some useful contacts for future possible adventures. Thanks to Sean Fitzpatrick for erecting the gazebo (thanks Nigel and Sharon), Denise Murray and Andrea Vallance for helping man the stall and to Sean Lenehan for all the much needed water refreshments. A great experience. Carolyne Wakefield

County Court Judge Visit On Monday 20th f November the Year 11/12 Legal Studies students were lucky enough to have a panel of people form the County Court visit. The County Court sits in Warrnambool several times throughout the year and we were lucky enough to have the team drop in on their way back to Warrnambool for the week. Students were able to hear directly about the experiences and skills of: Judge Mark Taft The Judges Associate and Tipstaff Two staff from the Geelong Crown Prosecutors Office A defence Lawyer. Students were able to learn firsthand the processes that occur in the criminal courtroom which was a great start for Unit 3 in 2018. Thanks to Terang College for joining with us for the event.

Timboon School Parents Association As we are drawing to the end of the year we have two more things on first one is Monday 4th December our breakup Dinner at the Railway View Hotel in Timboon at 7.00pm – we hope to see you there. Please let Sharon Mottram know if you are able to come, on 0408 236 945. Also we would like to say thank you to one of our Mums who is leaving TSPA as her last daughter has just finished Year 12. Jenny Inglis has been part of TSPA for a long time and her support and work has been invaluable. Jenny, you have been such a fantastic help each year with all that you do; we really appreciate it and wish you all the very best and we will miss you.

Also our Icy Pole day will be held on Wednesday 20th December after final assembly – Santa will be there to give icy poles to all Primary students. Many thanks to all of the people who have helped with TSPA this year to raise money to be able to give back to the school to help our teachers and students. ------------------------------------------------------- Walk October This week students have been most fortunate to sample a yummy dish, whisked up by Kylie Treble from ‘The Place of Wonder’ as part of our regional prize awarded for our magnificent efforts practising healthy habits, in walking many daily kilometres during October. Students nominated their favourite vegetable and Kylie made a ‘Vegetable Galette’ using the most popular vegetables. Everyone was given a chance to taste this delight and take the recipe home. We thank Kylie for giving her time to this prize-winning activity and the Corangamite Shire and VicHealth for initiating this fantastic Walk to School program.

BOOK CLUB Book Club orders are now being taken. The last day for orders is Friday, December 1st. LOOP orders will also be closed on that day.

In preparation for the Year 8 Science Cheese Appreciation night students were treated to Cheesemaking 101 introduced by WCB cheese grader Steve Billington. He provided cheeses for the students to the sample and taught them how to articulate the differences between Colby, Extra Tasty and Vintage cheeses and how to use all of their senses to identify different types of cheese by their various attributes. Steve explained the differences in the way that camembert and cheddar are produced and highlighted the differences in the scale and type of production.
