JUNE 30, 2013 13th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

WORD OF LIFE: It is imperative that the entire Catholic community in the United States come to realize the grave threats to the Church’s public moral witness. … The seriousness of these threats needs to be clearly appreciated at every level of ecclesial life. Of particular concern are certain attempts being made to limit that most cherished of American freedoms, the freedom of religion.

13th Sunday in Ordinary Time“For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather serve one another through love.” (Galatians 5:13)We like to celebrate the fact that we are free to “live the good life.” But Jesus calls us to a different kind of freedom. St. Paul reminds us that Jesus sets us free so that we can serve one another, share our gifts and promote God’s work here on earth to glorify His name and not honor ourselves.

CALL TO PRAYER FOR LIFE, MARRIAGE & RELIGIOUS LIBERTYIn this Year of Faith, the Catholic Bishops of the United States have called for a nationwide effort to advance a movement for Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty through prayer, penance, and sacrifice. Catholics across the nation are being encouraged to pray for rebuilding a culture favorable to life and marriage and for increased protections of religious liberty. This call to prayer is prompted by unprecedented challenges to the Church and the nation, particularly the HHS Mandate and current trends in government and culture toward redefining marriage. The goal of this call to prayer is twofold: (1) to increase awareness of these challenges and (2) to build spiritual stamina and fortitude among the faithful so that we can be effective and joyful witnesses of faith, hope, and charity and agents of the New Evangelization.

WAYS YOU CAN PARTICIPATE: Attend our monthly Eucharistic Adoration Pray the Rosary daily. Fast and abstain from meat on Fridays

Join the movement!Pray for our nation. Pray for life, marriage and religious

liberty.

Marriage: Love and Life In The Divine Plan: A Natural and Spiritual Blessing“While marriage is a special blessing for Christians because of the grace of Christ, marriage is also a natural blessing and gift for everyone in all times and cultures. It is a source of blessing to the couple, to their families, and to society and includes the wondrous gift of co-creating human life.” To read the document go to http://www.usccb.org/loveandlife/.

Quote from Pope Francis:“Today we can ask the Holy Spirit to give us all this Apostolic fervor and to give us the grace to be annoying when things are too quiet in the Church, the grace to go out to the outskirts of life. The Church has so much need of this!…So let us ask the Holy Spirit for this grace of Apostolic zeal, let’s be Christians with apostolic zeal. And if we annoy people, blessed be the Lord.”

This Week’s Reading:Jesus’ message for us in today’s Gospel is a strong one. Following up on last week’s message concerning the cost of discipleship, Jesus is here shown expecting his followers to have a singleness of purpose that not even Elisha had in today’s first reading. How can we be prepared to give up so much to follow Jesus?

Question of the WeekWhat comes first in my heart, love for God’s kingdom or accommodation to the culture? Do my responsibilities to my nearest and dearest ever conflict with mycommitment to Christ?
