From the Desk of Becky Zaist, Executive Director Did you know that the Senior Center of Jackson Hole is not a government organization? In many communities senior services are provided by the town or county. Here in Jackson, the Senior Cen-ter, a private 501(c)3 organization, provides these services through a private/public partnership. Federal and State grants support our services paying for about 43% of our program costs. Local Town & County support pays for about 22%. That leaves approx. 35% of our program costs to be raised by client fees and individual donations.
Senior Center programs are for everyone. If someone can’t afford a meal, a ride, an exercise class or in-home services we offer reduced fees and scholarships. The only way that we can do this is through your donations. Please consider helping the Senior Center and your friends and neighbors by making an end of the year donation to the Senior Center. All donations, big and small make a difference!
Congratulations Cindy Knight! 2017 Senior of the Year
Past Seniors of the Year 2007-2017
2017 Cindy Knight 2016 Caludia and Michael Schrotz 2015 Sylvia Raumaker 2014 Ron Stevens 2013 Marlene Lang 2012 Sue Hall 2011 Dorothy Tanner 2010 Judy Basye 2009 Hazel Halling 2008 Virginia Blair and Frances Spencer 2007 Phyllis Greene
Thank you to all who came out to celebrate the 2017 Senior of
the Year Nominees, Jean Day and Cindy Knight. A wonderful time
was had by all and Cindy Knight was named 2017 Senior of the Year.
Cindy can often be found at exercise classes, mahjong, bingo &
lunch at the Senior Center since retiring as Director of Van Vleck
House Group Home in 2015. Cindy is a Wyoming native who
worked with at-risk youth throughout her career. Since retiring she
continues to be involved in the community by volunteering at Teton
Literacy, Vertical Harvest, and Teton County Library. Cindy enjoys
cross-country skiing, hiking, and “anything with friends”. Karen
Swaim nominated Cindy because of “Cindy’s support of the Senior
Center through her participation plus her tireless hours of commu-
nity volunteerism make her an outstanding candidate for Senior of
the Year”.

Did we miss a Birthday? If your annual registration has
expired with the Senior Center, you will not see your birthday
listed. Please stop by to update.
BIRTHDAY LUNCH! December 13, 2017
December Birthdays will receive their lunch
compliments of First Interstate Bank.
If you’re in the market for a car, we hope you’ll Share the Love.
You can help seniors right here in Teton County when you buy or lease a new Subaru during the 2017 Share the Love Event (November 16 – January 2) and select Meals on Wheels as the recipient of a $250 donation from Subaru of America, Inc. “For the past ten years, Subaru of America has partnered alongside the Meals on Wheels network to deliver nutrition, companionship and comfort to our nation’s most vulnerable seniors,” said Ellie Hollander, President and CEO, Meals on Wheels America. “Since 2008, Subaru’s Share the Love Event has
helped deliver more than 1.7 million meals to seniors served by Meals on Wheels. Funds raised through this year’s event will come at a critical time for the Meals on Wheels network, allowing our boots on the ground to deliver even more of these critically needed services.” Each donation helps these programs enable seniors to age with independence and dignity in their own homes, where they want to be. As a provider of Meals on Wheels, the Senior Center is eligible to receive a portion of the funds raised through the Share the Love Event. What a great way to help local seniors! With Thanksgiving having come and gone, we contemplate the concept of gratitude. David Brooks, writing in the New York Times, wrote that our expectations color our capacity for gratitude. He posits that high expectations structure our moods and emotions, especially in the beautiful emotion of grati-tude. Gratitude happens when some kindness exceeds expectations, when it is undeserved. Gratitude is a sort of laughter of the heart that comes about after some surprising kindness. Most people feel grate-ful some of the time, after someone saves you from a mistake or brings you food during an illness. But some people seem grateful regardless of circumstance. They appear thankful practically all of the time. These people may have big ambitions, but they have preserved small anticipations. As most people get on in life and earn more status, they often get used to more respect and nicer treatment. But people with dispositional gratitude take nothing for granted. They take a beginner’s thrill at a word of praise, at another’s good performance or at each sunny day. They are attuned to the gift economy where people are motivated by sympathy as well as self-interest. In the gift economy intention matters. Grateful people feel they have been given much more than they deserve. We’re grateful to people who tried to do us favors even when those favors didn’t work out. We’re grateful because some people showed they care about us more than we thought they did. We’re grateful when others took an imaginative leap and put themselves in our mind, even with no benefit to themselves. We live in a capitalist meritocracy that encourages individualism and utilitarianism, ambi-tion and pride. But this society would fall apart if not for another economy, in which insufficiency is acknowledged and dependence celebrated. Gratitude is the ability to see and appreciate this other al-most magical economy. Gratitude is a form of social glue. A debt of gratitude is repaid forward. In this way each gift ripples out-ward and yokes circles of people in bonds of affection. People with grateful dispositions see their efforts grandly, but not themselves. Life doesn’t surpass their dreams but it nicely surpasses their expectations. In this season of joy and giving, remember, “Thanks are the highest form of thought”
