Service of Worship

July 3, 2016 at 10:00 am

Welcome! Thank you for joining us today for worship.

This morning we celebrate the Eucharist (the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, or Holy Communion). We celebrate the Eucharist by intinction (dipping the bread into the cup). We also provide a gluten-free alternative, so that all may freely partake.

After receiving the elements you may come to the railing to receive a blessing from the pastors.

Prayer of Preparation

Open unto me – light for my darkness. Open unto me – courage for my fear. Open unto me – hope for my despair. Open unto me – peace for my turmoil. Open unto me – joy for my sorrow. Open unto me – strength for my weakness. Open unto me – wisdom for my confusion. Open unto me – forgiveness for my sins. Open unto me – love for my hates. Open unto me – thy Self for my self. Lord, Lord, open unto me! Amen.

Howard Thurman (1900-1981)

Welcome

Prelude arr. Michael Hassell “O Beautiful for Spacious Skies”

Greeting Our God with Joy

Call to Worship Elder Todd Webster One: Come, you who thirst for grace. All: Come, you who hunger for justice. One: Come, you who are a stranger in a strange land. All: Come, you who are like a child at home. One: Come, for Christ welcomes you to this time and place. All: We have come to worship God. Then let us worship well!

* Opening Hymn No. 331 “God of the Ages, Whose Almighty Hand”

Renewing Our Relationship with God

Prayer of Confession O God who loves us, hear our prayer. So often we come to you at a loss – at a loss for the right words, the right deeds, the right feelings. We know all is not right, but we cannot say with certainty what is wrong. There are deep divisions between us and others. There are too many who live in poverty and fear. There are too many horrific stories, and not enough hopeful ones. So we pray to you, our Creator and Redeemer, to make things right, and to make us right with you and each other. Turn us around from that which destroys toward that which heals and brings joy. And hear us again, as we offer you our confession in silence.

Time of Silent Confession

Kyrie eleison (Lord, have mercy) John Merbecke Lisa Koops, cantor

Affirming the Good News in Our Lives

Assurance of Pardon

Opening Our Hearts to God’s Word

We Commission the Youth Mission Trip and Send Them Forth

Scripture Lesson 2 Kings 5: 1-14 Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man and in high favor with his master, because by him the Lord had given victory to Aram. The man, though a mighty warrior, suffered from leprosy. Now the Arameans on one of their raids had taken a young girl captive from the land of Israel, and she served Naaman’s wife. She said to her mistress, “If only my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.” So Naaman went in and told his lord just what the girl from the land of Israel had said. And the king of Aram said, “Go then, and I will send along a letter to the king of Israel.” He went, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold,

and ten sets of garments. He brought the letter to the king of Israel, which read, “When this letter reaches you, know that I have sent to you my servant Naaman, that you may cure him of his leprosy.” When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, “Am I God, to give death or life, that this man sends word to me to cure a man of his leprosy? Just look and see how he is trying to pick a quarrel with me.” But when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent a message to the king, “Why have you torn your clothes? Let him come to me, that he may learn that there is a prophet in Israel.”

So Naaman came with his horses and chariots, and halted at the entrance of Elisha’s house. Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, “Go, wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored and you shall be clean.” But Naaman became angry and went away, saying, “I thought that for me he would surely come out, and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, and would wave his hand over the spot, and cure the leprosy! Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them, and be clean?” He turned and went away in a rage. But his servants approached and said to him, “Father, if the prophet had commanded you to do something difficult, would you not have done it? How much more, when all he said to you was, ‘Wash, and be clean’?” So he went down and immersed himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; his flesh was restored like the flesh of a young boy, and he was clean.

After the reading Leader: Hear what the Holy Spirit is telling God’s people. People: Thanks be to God.

Prayers of the People

Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Communion of the People

Music during Communion Jean Sibelius “Song of Peace”

Prayer after Communion Thank you for sharing your life and love with us. Now strengthen us to be your lively and loving people. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit to bring good news to the poor and lift blind eyes to sight, to loose the chains that bind and claim your blessing for all people. In Jesus’ name we pray. AMEN.
