Living the Liturgy

We all fear losing that which is familiar. We fear dying. When our securities and familiarities are threatened, the anxiety of uncertainty can lead us into fear and despair. We have difficulty believing that new life comes from death. This is the basis of what it means to hope. There are no dead ends or final endings with God. Through his passion and death, Jesus opens up the possibility for new life and new beginnings for all believers. "Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit." As our journey of Lent hastens to an end, the mystery of Christ's passion and death come before us to teach us valuable lessons both for this life and the next.

Gospel Meditation

"Now there were some Greeks among those who had come to worship at the feast. They came to Philip and asked him, 'Sir, we would like to see Jesus.'" It has begun. News of Jesus has spread beyond native-born, Aramaic-speaking Jews. We don't know if the Greeks mentioned here heard of Jesus from fellow travelers or if news of this intriguing rabbi had reached all the way to their home. What we do know is that this interaction spurred an interesting comment from Jesus: "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified." In other words, it has begun. The time has come for the message to move beyond the geographic bounds of Israel. But what does this message require? The Gospel is clear: "he said this indicating the kind of death he would die." A grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies to its life as only a seed. A caterpillar takes on the appearance of temporary death in order to transform into a butterfly. In the Gospels, sacrifice and death are a way of becoming something more than you were before. This Lent, new life can come from our sacrifices. When we enter into the season with Jesus, our difficulties can transform our perspective. "Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit." As we abstain from meat and fast from eating between meals, we can grow in compassion for the hungry. We can give alms of our time, sacrificially spending time with the lonely, the sick, and the marginalized. Our little Lenten "deaths"—death to unnecessary preferences, death to selfish living, death to ignorance of other's pain—can bring new life to the world long after the season is over. This is the invitation this Sunday and every Lenten season, to begin anew from death to life. ___________________________________________________

FAMILY LIFE & SPIRITUALITY

GROWING IN FAITH & FELLOWSHIP

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

Throughout the year, we often offer Children’s Liturgy of the Word during the Sunday morning 9 am Mass. When it happens, children ages 4–9 are invited forward after the opening prayers to go to the John Paul II Room with adult leaders to hear the Liturgy of the Word proclaimed in a way geared towards their comprehension. Children return to the main parish assembly to join their families in time for the Preparation of the Gifts and to participate in the remainder of Mass. Registration is not required to participate in Children’s Liturgy of the Word. If you have any questions about this ministry or would like to help, please contact Gayle Heyman at [email protected] or (858) 483-3032. ___________________________________________________

The Ministry Center is an open space for families with children in Faith Formation Classes to enjoy. Come and finish work, read a book, meet other parents, let younger siblings play (dedicated child area available), pray with others, or talk about the Sunday readings, or just enjoy some quiet space. ___________________________________________________

BECOMING CATHOLIC

SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION

Are you wondering what life is all about, perhaps asking yourself, “What is my purpose,” or “Why am I here?” You are welcome to seek answers with us! While we offer seasonal Connection to Christ groups to all adults, the Rite of Christian initiation of Adults (RCIA) group is the process by which the unbaptized and baptized Christians of other faith traditions, are invited to explore Catholic spirituality in community, deepening our relationship with Jesus Christ. Our group meets weekly on Sunday mornings, year-round. The faith journey is unique to each person, and is often characterized by an awakening, or conversion of the heart, that leads one to desire an authentic life of Christian discipleship. Through the foundational sacraments of initiation—Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist—we encounter and participate fully in the mystery of Jesus Christ’s life, saving death, and Resurrection. God wants us to know His love and fulfilling plan for our lives! We welcome all inquiries and look forward to accompanying you soon. Please email Lee Hulburt, RCIA coordinator, at [email protected] or call her at (858) 483-3030 x117.

Knights of Columbus Thank You

These items can be left in the Parish Office during the week, clearly marked “Neighbors in Need.” Your continued support is greatly appreciated. Our goal is 3,600 dozen cookies to be shared in the three prison yards where we will be ministering this time. Package the cookies in clear, zip-lock freezer bags (quart size or gallon size are ideal). Package no more than one dozen per bag. Please put only cookies in the bags (no tin foil, wire ties, letters, notes, or tracts). The bags will be inspected by the prison personnel. Cookies containing nuts should be labeled on the bag with a Sharpie marker. Sugar free and/or gluten free cookies are also requested and to be labeled. Store the cookies at home for up to a week or freeze for longer.

Cookies will be collected in the Parish Hall on Sunday, March 25, 2018 between 7:30–11 am. Contact Fred Williams at [email protected] for more information.

ACA—We Can Make an Impact!

Many thanks to those of you who have contributed to this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) for the Diocese of San Diego, “Sharing God’s Gifts.” If you have not already done so, we invited you to participate. As disciples, we are called to use the gifts we have received from the Lord in service of others. As Catholics, we are many parts but all one body. The Annual Catholic Appeal provides an opportunity to share our gifts beyond our parish boundaries, in support of programs that serve San Diego and Imperial Counties. United with 96 other parishes throughout the diocese, we can make a tremendous impact as we strive to carry out the mission Jesus entrusted to us. Our parish goal this year is $76,000. We are confident that, with your help, we can exceed our goal! Can you imagine the lives we could touch if every parish household contributed? Regardless of the size of the gift, we urge you to unite with us in spreading God’s love and provision to our local community.

Funds collected beyond our parish goal will go to our new parish young adult ministry endowment fund which will aid in providing outreach, formation, and support to young adults in all stages of their journey—single, engaged, married, and parenting.

Visit www.saintbrigidparish.org/aca for more information about the ministries supported by the ACA and for updates on our progress toward the goal. Thank you for your generosity!
