It’s exciting to see October get underway at Docklands with a line up of great activities and festivities on the calendar. Docklands is defi nitely the place to be this month with the inaugural Docklands Arts & Laughs Festival set to transform the precinct into a world class entertainment destination, culminating in what is sure to be a toe-tapping Festival Blues Sunday.

For motoring enthusiasts, don’t miss Healey Display Day along NewQuay Promenade where close to 90 road, race and rally Austin Healey vehicles will be on display. Culture is also alive and well in the precinct as the one day event “Sonidos de mi Tierra – Sounds of my land” will showcase cultural diversity from over 22 different Spanish speaking countries through dance, music, food and family fun – read more about this and other local events on page 6.

Docklands is home to some of Melbourne’s forefront entertainment venues including Alumbra at Central Pier which celebrated 10 years recently and continues to provide Melburnians with a unique and premier venue to relax, unwind and enjoy Docklands waterfront and stunning sunsets.

It looks as though the establishment of a Docklands Place of Worship

will be become a reality by 2015 as Planning Minister Matthew Guy formally announced in September, Expressions of Interest are now sought from developers and operators before the closing date on October 11.

3008Docklands would also like to take this opportunity to welcome the newly appointed Docklands Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee and to thank the outgoing Executive Committee for their hard work and dedication in ensuring the growth of businesses in Docklands and for giving them a voice. We look forward to the future and on page 7 we have outlined the vision for the DCC under the direction of the new executive.

Enjoy and celebrate life in Docklands – the place to work, live and play!

The spiritual life of Docklands is about to be enlightened with proposals sought to build the fi rst Place of Worship for the precinct, as announced by Planning Minister Matthew Guy in early September.

Delivering on an election promise, Mr Guy announced that expressions of interest were being sought to develop a site in the northern part of Docklands. “Docklands is now a suburb, and like every suburb, it deserves space for a place of worship,” Matthew Guy said.

In July 2012, Places Victoria in partnership with the City of Melbourne launched the Docklands Community and Place Plan which is a shared vision for the next decade of development in Docklands and details the community infrastructure and services to be delivered. One of 30 projects unveiled in the Docklands Community and Place Plan, the development could also include limited residential or retail uses to support and enhance the role of the centre.

“A new religious centre will provide signifi cant community benefi t bringing faith as well as education and training facilities for the Dockland’s community and emerging businesses,” Mr Guy added.

Religious community leaders have welcomed the recent announcement. Rabbi Shlomo Nathanson of Chabad Jewish Community Centre in Port Melbourne which also comprises the Docklands and South Melbourne Chabad Jewish Communities is in support of a Place of Worship for residents and workers alike in the precinct.

“This is great progress. Religious expression is crucial in every community. People need to know that they have a place where they feel comfortable to worship” said Rabbi Nathanson.

This sentiment is also supported by Minister Guy who added “places of worship play an important role in the spiritual and emotional life

of a community. They can be a critical focal point, particularly for a new suburb such as Docklands, in bringing people together.”

A 5,525 square metre site has been set aside for a Place of Worship on the Footscray Road and Little Docklands Drive intersection at Docklands. It is anticipated that the project will be underway by 2015.

Places Victoria is keen to achieve this objective and has initiated a bid process to attract the broadest possible range of potential developers and operators.“The success of this initiative will be borne out of careful planning and comprehensive community consultation,” Mr Guy said.

Further information is available in the EOI document, which is available on registration of your interest, via www.places.vic.gov.au.

Expressions of Interest close on Thursday 11 October 2012at 3.00pm AEST.

Melbourne’s leading music and culture driven bar and cocktail venue Alumbra was founded in 2002 and celebrates its 10 year anniversary in 2012.

This versatile venue is capable of hosting imaginative corporate functions, world-class DJ events and weekly clubbing nights. Embracing modern and modular design, Alumbra can accommodate up to 750 people across the main bar, event space lounge-style mezzanine level and decking area. Located at the tip of Central Pier, Docklands, Alumbra boasts stunning views of Victoria Harbour and the Bolte Bridge.

Reincarnated from its original South Wharf location, Alumbra brings its trademark global essence to Central Pier.

On Thursday 20th September, Alumbra celebrated past successes and previewed what’s ahead through a celebration with over 500 guests from Melbourne’s largest and most infl uential corporations, charity organisations and sporting clubs.

‘It was a poignant opportunity to remind stakeholders that Alumbra is more than a bar or venue, but a gateway into premier entertainment,’ said Director Simon Digby.

The party was around a Garden of Eden concept. In a fi gurative sense, The Garden of Eden is a place of bliss and paradise. This celebratory party told the story of creation through Alumbra’s theming, which successfully manoeuvred the guests through the extraordinary and captivatingly unique event experiences across venue and menu and culinary presentation.

Director Simon Digby and his management team credit Alumbra’s longevity to a keen focus on long-term business outcomes, benchmarking international best practice, strategic vision and diversifi cation. They also credit Alumbra’s stunning location in a rapidly developing part of Melbourne.

“Our reason for choosing the Central Pier site was two-fold: be the fi rst venue to establish a presence at what we knew would be a growth area for Melbourne, and also capitalise on the goodwill earned with patrons of Alumbra’s previous location in South Wharf,” says Simon Digby.

Since Alumbra opened 10 years ago, the venue has welcomed close to 900,000 guests through the doors and has hosted over 850 functions.

Digby claims the versatility of the brand has been critical to the success of the business: “The venue can be transformed into a range of event spaces upon request, from corporate events and wedding receptions, to daytime BBQ functions and breakfast meetings, to a nightclub and cocktail lounge.

“As well as constantly pushing the boundaries of the space at Alumbra, it has also been important for us to raise the stakes and keep things fresh with complementary business ventures like off-site events across Australia and internationally, CDs, music labels and our differentiated nightclub offerings.”

Over the past decade the venue has hosted international celebrities including Giselle Bunchen, Meryl Streep and Dita Von Teese.

It has also built credibility through a series of industry alliances with brands including Moet Hennessey, Paradise Club Mykonos, Koncrete Agency and Future Entertainment.

The biggest ever function for Alumbra was 2012 New Year’s Day: 3600 patrons came through the doors to see internationally acclaimed DJ’s - Dimitri From Paris (France), John Dahlback (Sweden), The Shapeshifters (UK) and DJ Spen (USA).

Alumbra has also consistently brought to Melbourne some of the most talented dance music artists through its nightclub which operates on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And the most played song by beloved Sunday band, Afrodescia (having been with Alumbra for almost 10 years) is ‘Never too much’ by Luther Vandross.

To date at Central Pier, 520 sunsets have been viewed from the desk by the after work drinks crowd. The solid performance of Alumbra over the last ten years is set to continue, with plans to build the momentum and to explore new developments.

For more information please visit www.alumbra.com.au.

As a founding member Outgoing DCC President Keith Rankin outlined the dedication and commitment of the outgoing Docklands Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee on behalf of himself and Elena Tsapatolis, outgoing Vice President and offered their ongoing support to the incoming committee as continuing members.

The 2012/13 incoming Executive Committee for the Docklands Chamber of Commerce is led by Stephen Clement (ING Real Estate) as President, Joh Maxwell (Tours on Trikes) as Vice President, Rick Deering ( SSKB)continuing in his role as Treasurer with ongoing executive members John McGaw (Destination Melbourne) and Sally Hewitt (Quest 111) now joined by Mark Wilson (3AW), Josephine Tan (Bank Of Queensland), Shane Scanlan (Docklands News) and Bill Reid (Reid Resources).

The newly elected Executive Committee have committed to providing representation for all Docklands businesses and addressing both large and small business issues. They intend

to bring large corporate entities together with small business operators as well as the precinct developers into one medium to represent Docklands effectively.

The new executive promises to work with key stakeholders to provide positive outcomes for the Docklands Business Community and to advocate in their best interests.

Their aim is to work with Destination Docklands and all parties involved in the local media to optimise positive promotional opportunities and drive visitation to the precinct to optimise outcomes for all levels of business.
