Yin Yoga Foundations 25 Hours Elective
Dates January 24-26, 2019
Instructors Joe Barnett
Subject Yin Yoga Foundations: Caterpillar & Saddle Archetypes
Duration of Course 3 days
Hours of Course 8:30am-5:30pm
Tuition Elective for the 300 Hour, or A la carte $550
Course Description:
Yin Yoga is a simple practice of surrender. We settle into a posture for 3-7 minutes and slowly
relax our muscles to allow the deeper, drier tissues, the connective tissues (fascia) that wrap
muscles and form joint capsules to be safely and therapeutically stretched, stimulated and
strengthened.
However, leading Yogis toward simplicity and surrender can be challenging. It requires an
appreciation and general understanding of the infinite complexity of human variation. Physically,
mentally and emotionally, every Yogi is unique and requires a unique approach.
Each Foundation Module postulates and dissects three broad principles of practice and
teaching:
#1: Listen to the body and lead it into a shape, a posture, that follows the body’s unique
contours. We will learn how and where to “listen” (i.e. observe) the body and mind’s responses
to effects of poses.
25
#2: Be still and surrender. We will discuss and practice some of the meditative techniques
involved.
#3: Rebound. Passively observe and then actively manipulate the flow of energy (i.e. chi, prana,
“life force”) released on the exit of a Yin pose.
The body-awareness of Principle #1 develops by working and communicating with others. This
is a hands-on training. We will analyze, observe and practice the Yin Yoga Postures in depth.
We will articulate the joints on a plastic skeleton model. We will study slides of real bones
showing a spectrum of typical variations. But more importantly, we will examine and compare
each other, the real flesh and bones, with range of motion (ROM) tests, Assisted Yin Yoga
stretching and other experiential analyses.
As for Principle #2, the practice of stillness and surrender can be difficult enough, let alone while
stretching across wide sheets of stiff fascia and opening deep into the joints. Cultivating skillful
relaxation efforts requires a certain level of observation and discrimination, strengthened by an
anatomical understanding of the ever-changing sensations.
We will study schematics of muscle/fascial lines as well as the corresponding pathways of
subtle energy according to Ancient Yogic and Taoist traditions. We will feel and discuss the
muliti-layered electrical and emotional responses in this practice: i.e. Chi or Prana. It is here we
approach our 3rd principle, The Rebound.
The study culminates in a better appreciation for the endless variety of humankind, and a set of
practical tools to successfully lead a class, as well as dialogue more clearly in brief moments of
one-on-one consultation that sometimes spring up in classes.
26
Yin Yoga Next Level 25 Hours Elective
Dates January 27-29, 2019

Subject Yin Yoga Next Level: Rebounds & Chakras
Duration of Course 3 days
Hours of Course 8:30am-5:30pm
Tuition Elective for the 300 Hour, or A la carte $550
Course Description:
This Next Level study aims deeper than the crude tissues of the Target Area. The Yin practice
releases blocked Chi which has the potential to awaken the spiritual centers of our being, the

practice of Yin Yoga.
“The Modern Meridian Theory” proposes that the physical manifestation of Chi (or Prana) flows
in water patterns, “rivers” or Meridians that run through the Fascia. Restricted tissue, as well as
stagnant and/or deficient Chi flow is corrected and regulated through the proper application of
practices like Yin Yoga.
The release of the posture allows this Chi flow, this “Rebound.” And with a continuously
conscious yet soft focus at the end of each asana, this intelligent vibration can be directed into
the Chakras to reveal everything from suppressed regret and fear, to forgotten joy and
inspiration. Each awakened Chakra is a unique opportunity to examine deeply hidden
27
motivations, an opportunity to choose to release or embrace these previously hidden drives in
order to move toward a higher path.

Tap into the healing and transformative energies of the Deities from the Hindu tradition. Through
storytelling, ancient wisdom, sacred ritual and myth, we learn about energies that live and
breathe in our own existence. These stories, handed down from so many years ago, support us,
humor us and give us a compass to set our dristhi in alignment with.
Our yoga practice reminds us that when we align with this ancient wisdom, we too, can embody
the strength and wisdom of these stories and mythical figures. We will learn about: Ganesh,
Shiva, Shakti, Kali, Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati to name a few. We’ll call on their energies
using meditation, myth, asana, breath work, mantra and mudra. Applying mystical priestess
technologies and divination tools, we’ll hold space for that which we are ready and willing to
transform, transmute, and manifest, as we shift our energy to align with our purpose.

The Yoga Sutras is one of the most revered texts of yoga and is thought to be more than 2,500 years old. These "threads" on yoga or union, are extremely terse, stating concisely and often precisely, essential points or techniques to achieving self-realization. Originally these teachings were passed on in the ancient oral traditions, intimately shared from teacher to student. Even today almost every translation of the sutras includes pages and pages of master commentary deemed useful to impart the correct teachings, methods and sacred wisdom necessary to achieve Yoga. In this workshop Nischala Joy Devi will impart her heart-centered intuitive interpretation of the
Yoga Sutras from her book - The Secret Power of Yoga. Nischala Joy Devi’s is a divinely
feminine perspective of the Yoga Sutras which offers students an opportunity to partake in the
unfathomable sense of peace, emotional and spiritual enlightenment that is our birthright.
