The General English classes at AIS help you improve your English proficiency step by step, using topic-based, modern textbooks and an interactive classroom approach.

Building on the skills learned in the General English class, you’ll have the opportunity to focus on real day-to-day English with topic-based learning and weekly vocabulary and speaking assessments.

HOURS General English: 9.00am - 12.00pm Skills English: 12.30pm - 2.10pm

Full-time: 23 hours and 20 minutes per week Part-time: 15 hours per week

This is a full-time 6 or 12 week course for students who have achieved an Intermediate level of English language proficiency on the IELTS placement test. Entry to the IELTS course is based on an entry test and is at the discretion of the IELTS Coordinator. Class size is limited to a maximum of 14 students.

The course is divided into two modules, General and Skills. During the General sessions students will be trained in interpreting and answering types of IELTS questions. The Skills sessions are topic-based covering the topic areas most often found in IELTS examinations such as health, social issues, technology, education and the environment.

This is a full-time, 12 week course designed specifically to prepare for NZCEL (Level 4). It introduces concepts necessary for success in internally assessed programmes. It includes an introduction to academic-style listening, speaking, writing, research, and presentations. A skills portion concentrates on the reading ability necessary for research assignments and presentations.

Students are assessed weekly and progress is closely monitored and discussed.

Students who are Pre-Intermediate and above, (IELTS 4.5/TEP40) are eligible to enter this course. After successful completion of EAP students will have raised their English proficiency to a level enabling direct entry to NZCEL (Level 4).

A very high level of commitment is required for this course.

The New Zealand Certificate In English Language (NZCEL) (Level 4) is a full-time, 14 week pathway programme designed to help students to achieve success in their tertiary studies. The NZCEL (L4) will equip learners with English language proficiency and the academic skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing to enable them to successfully enter a diploma or bachelor degree level programme of study without having to complete IELTS.

Sara is a 23-year-old marketing specialist from Colombia. She knows her English ability is very important for her future.

“English will help me apply for better jobs and enable me to help my country grow,” she says.

While working in Colombia, Sara decided to improve her English skills. “In my work, English is fundamental. It opens up professional doors, and it also gives me personal satisfaction.”

So Sara came to New Zealand and enrolled at AIS for six months. She chose Auckland because it’s safe and has a great quality of life. There are not many students from Latin America here, so that pushed Sara to become fluent quickly.

“AIS has international vision, academic excellence, a wide cultural mix and good facilities. It has excellent teachers, and provides a good learning environment,” she says.

The English Language Centre offers after-class activities where students practise English by interacting with local people while getting to know the city. “I attended extra listening and pronunciation classes, and went on trips where I practised English, met new people and had unforgettable experiences.”

Sara says her communication skills were poor when she arrived. “I started at elementary level, but with effort and practice, I completed my studies at an advanced level.”

Sara returned to Colombia to look for job opportunities where she can put her skills into practice and contribute to her country’s development.

“I am very happy with my progress, and I thank AIS for their academic support.”

SARA SOFÍA RÍOS LONDOÑO

I was able to improve my English skills and complete my studies at an advanced level.

This is a full-time, 14 week pathway programme designed to help students to achieve success in their tertiary studies. The NZCEL (L5) will equip learners with English language proficiency and the academic skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing to enable them to successfully enter into programmes at the postgraduate level without having to complete IELTS.

NZCEL (L5) is the pathway to postgraduate programmes.

A very high level of commitment is required for this programme.
