Building on the skills learned in the General English class, you’ll have the opportunity to focus on real day-to-day English with topic-based learning and weekly vocabulary and speaking assessments.
HOURS General English: 9.00am - 12.00pm Skills English: 12.30pm - 2.10pm
Full-time: 23 hours and 20 minutes per week Part-time: 15 hours per week
This is a full-time 6 or 12 week course for students who have achieved an Intermediate level of English language proficiency on the IELTS placement test. Entry to the IELTS course is based on an entry test and is at the discretion of the IELTS Coordinator. Class size is limited to a maximum of 14 students.
The course is divided into two modules, General and Skills. During the General sessions students will be trained in interpreting and answering types of IELTS questions. The Skills sessions are topic-based covering the topic areas most often found in IELTS examinations such as health, social issues, technology, education and the environment.
This is a full-time, 12 week course designed specifically to prepare for NZCEL (Level 4). It introduces concepts necessary for success in internally assessed programmes. Students are assessed weekly and progress is closely monitored and discussed.

Sara is a 23-year-old marketing specialist from Colombia. She knows her English ability is very important for her future.
“English will help me apply for better jobs and enable me to help my country grow,” she says.
While working in Colombia, Sara decided to improve her English skills. “In my work, English is fundamental. It opens up professional doors, and it also gives me personal satisfaction.”
So Sara came to New Zealand and enrolled at AIS for six months. She chose Auckland because it’s safe and has a great quality of life. There are not many students from Latin America here, so that pushed Sara to become fluent quickly.
“AIS has international vision, academic excellence, a wide cultural mix and good facilities. It has excellent teachers, and provides a good learning environment,” she says.
The English Language Centre offers after-class activities where students practise English by interacting with local people while getting to know the city. “I attended extra listening and pronunciation classes, and went on trips where I practised English, met new people and had unforgettable experiences.”
Sara says her communication skills were poor when she arrived. “I started at elementary level, but with effort and practice, I completed my studies at an advanced level.”
Sara returned to Colombia to look for job opportunities where she can put her skills into practice and contribute to her country’s development.
“I am very happy with my progress, and I thank AIS for their academic support.”
