PRESENTED BY THE

For thirty years now, lawyers and legal technology enthusiasts just like you have been coming to ABA TECHSHOW to learn how technology helps them work smarter, practice better, and deliver higher quality legal services to clients. Isn’t it incredible to think that someone in 1986 (i.e. 30 years ago) had the forethought to believe that there would be such a convergence of law and technology? Putting this amazing futurism in perspective, in 1986, at ABA TECHSHOW #1, Microsoft first went public at $21.00 per share, MS-DOS 3.2 had just been released, and Apple introduced a revolutionary personal computer called the Macintosh Plus –

that included one single megabyte of RAM! Now, thirty years later, most lawyers can’t conceive of a law practice, legal department, or public law service operating without technology.

Back then, busy attorneys would leave a trail of telephone numbers so our offices could attempt to contact us, we asked for directions over the phone and began to use a new technology called fax machines. Now, our cell phones – to which most of us are tethered day and night – have more computing power than tens of thousands of the first Mac Plus computers. We are constantly in contact with our offices and clients through voice, text, e-mail, and social media. To say things have changed would be a monumental understatement. For 30 years, TECHSHOW has been connecting lawyers and technology. This is why ABA TECHSHOW is a very special conference.

For me, legal technology is my passion. I am proud to have lead an exceptionally talented planning board made up of attorneys, consultants, practice management advisors, and technology professionals who have volunteered days of their time to put together this conference. Over the course of 2½ amazing days in Chicago, we’ve planned eighteen exceptional program tracks including security and encryption, social media, e-discovery, law firm management and marketing, finance, workflows, best practices, and cutting edge technology. We’ve assembled an incredibly distinguished faculty from across the nation who will share their deep knowledge in these areas with you and your fellow attendees.

But – as always with ABA TECHSHOW – there’s more! Our EXPO Hall is filled with hundreds of vendors, specialists in their field, ready to share how they can help you fill needs and solve problems. The TECHSHOW EXPO Hall is an amazing place to see the latest and greatest technology available to our profession! And this year, we’ve extended our EXPO Hall hours, and for the first time ever, you can celebrate our kick-off celebration with the vendors in the EXPO Hall the evening of Wednesday, March 16th.

The TECHSHOW Board is also incredibly proud to announce that Cindy Cohn, of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is our keynote speaker. Cindy is the Executive Director of this very important, non-profit organization dedicated to defending civil rights and liberties in this new, digital world. The EFF champions privacy, free expression, and innovation through impact litigation, policy analysis, grassroots activism, and the development of new technologies. Personally, I cannot wait to hear what Cindy has to share with us!

And, there’s more! In keeping with the theme of digital privacy, this year TECHSHOW is offering TWO plenary sessions. The first will be on Friday, March 18 and will feature four very special speakers, including Ben Wizner, the ACLU lawyer currently representing Edward Snowden. Ben and the exceptional panel he’s assembled will present a fascinating and highly-relevant session, “Can They Hear Me Now? Practicing Law in an Age of Mass Surveillance.” Our second plenary, on Saturday March 19, will be a panel discussion lead by our own TECHSHOW Vice-Chair and legal technology expert, Adriana Linares. Adriana and four Florida lawyers discuss how they each adopted technology in their practices (after resisting technology for years!) and how it made a world of difference for each of them.

And lastly, who wouldn’t want to do a little celebrating on this thirtieth anniversary? On Thursday, March 17, you’re all invited to join us for a very special ABA TECHSHOW anniversary celebration in the Hilton Hotel. Our special celebration sponsor, Thomson Reuters, will provide food, drink, and Las Vegas style gaming tables. The evening will include an introduction of thirty years of past TECHSHOW chairs toasting and roasting the past three decades of TECHSHOW, legal technology, and our profession!

As you can see, this will be a very special ABA TECHSHOW. I look forward to seeing YOU at ABA TECHSHOW’s 30th Anniversary, March 16-19, 2016, at the Chicago Hilton!

Steven J. Best, Esq.2016 ABA TECHSHOW Planning Board Chair

A Message from the ABA TECHSHOW 2016 Chair, Steven Best

Keynote Speaker: Cindy CohnFriday, March 18, 201612:45 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.Sponsored by:

Cindy Cohn is the Executive Director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation. From 2000-2015 she served as EFF’s Legal Director as well as its General Counsel. Ms. Cohn first became involved with EFF in 1993, when EFF asked her to serve as the outside lead attorney in Bernstein v. Dept. of Justice, the successful First Amendment challenge to the U.S. export restrictions on cryptography.

The National Law Journal named Ms. Cohn one of 100 most influential lawyers in America in 2013, noting: “[I]f Big Brother is watching, he better look out for Cindy Cohn.” She was also named in 2006 for “rushing to the barricades wherever freedom and civil liberties are at stake online.” In 2007 the National Law Journal named her one of the 50 most influential women lawyers in America. In 2010 the Intellectual Property Section of the State Bar of California awarded her its Intellectual Property Vanguard Award and in 2012 the Northern California Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists awarded her the James Madison Freedom of Information Award.
