STUDENT SERVICES VCASS has recently been offered a free workshop promoting good mental health by Entertainment Assist, an organisation dedicated to promoting and facilitating the enhancement of mental health and wellbeing in the Australian entertainment industry. See more: https://www.entertainmentassist.org.au The workshop would run for three hours, potentially in Week 1 or 2 of Term 2 for interested students. Research has found that due to the significant amount of night work, as well as distances travelled, and the insecurity of gaining regular professional employment, many individuals in this industry suffer from anxiety and depression. Considering our students have a goal of working in the entertainment industry it would be a valuable workshop for them to consider. Entertainment Assist has previously successfully offered this workshop at a tertiary level. The workshop itself involves talks / discussions with members of Entertainment Assist (who are experienced entertainers), as well as a psychologist from the Black dog institute: https://www.blackdoginstitute.org.au The session is open to ALL SENIOR STUDENTS and would include discussion, viewing of films, and be interactive, with a focus on the indicators of mental health issues, what you can do if you identify these in yourself and others, and how you can assist yourself and others. If any students are interested in attending this workshop, it will be open to the first 30 students who make contact. Your attendance at the workshop would mean that you would miss some academic or specialist classes on the day of the workshop (TBC). If any parents believe their child may benefit from this workshop, please encourage them to put their name forward. All interested participants can email before me directly via email. The event will only go ahead if we have the numbers. ROSINA GANNON,

I also found the Time Management session with Elevate Education was really beneficial. As soon as I got home I made a study timetable and wrote little notes for myself about the strategies we learned. It has really got me motivated and excited about my study. YSAS was probably one of the best drug and alcohol presentations I've been a part of. The Keys Please and Alcohol Education were good as they gave us a lot of information for things we will be needing quite soon and showed us the dangers and how to avoid them. I thoroughly enjoyed the past three days of the SHAW program, as it had multiple life experiences and things i can take into the world when I finish high school and carry with me for the rest of my life. I think it's great for students to have a break from their studies. It's not only a break for me though. I really found it as a wake up call to many issues like spinal cord injuries, blindness and having to live your life in a completely different way. The SHAW program has offered a lot of fun times to me but it has also made me very grateful. Personally, I think the SHAW program was very worthwhile. Being a new student I found it a great way to meet people across specialty streams that I may not have met otherwise. Even though I was apprehensive about being taken out of my comfort zone with bush dancing, afterwards, I had so much fun! It was a great, beneficial break from our academics. I really liked the martial arts and juggling sessions. Mostly because everyone was so enthusiastic and it was a really great and yum atmosphere, but also be-cause i met and associated myself with people from year 10 that i haven't had the chance to yet. The third year was wonderful and I'm sad it's the last however I feel lucky to have done it for three years. The topics covered are often ones taken for granted so it was lovely to stop and reflect on these topics. ROSINA GANNON, HEAD OF STUDENT SERVICES

SHAW PROGRAM At the start of this month we held our annual SHAW Program for senior students. This is the third year, and as always I like to get direct feedback from students, teachers and parents about the program. I would like to thank all those who took the time to complete the survey. I had a full range of comments passed on to me and shall use this to inform my choices for next year. It was pleasing to see that most respondents to the survey were very appreciative of the program, and what they gained from it. Also, a number of people offered suggestions for the following year which I will definitely look into. It is often difficult making choices to ‘fit’ all individuals; what one student loves, another finds irrelevant, or, sometimes you hit the bulls-eye for all! Ironically, for some, the idea of missing class is stressful but as a school we are committed to health and wellbeing, and I fundamentally believe it is worth while to take some time out and reflect on issues beyond those of our everyday, and also remember to laugh and take the time to deepen our knowledge of ourselves, others and the world around us. We had some amazing presenters and workshops this year, all focused on giving students insight into aspects of health and well-being, as well as assisting them to make greater connections with each other. Thanks to all our students who embrace the program and participate with great interest and openness. Here are some of the responses from students: I absolutely loved Lorin Nicholson's speech! He is such a beautiful man with a big heart and a very strong and positive mind. I was so inspired and reminded of how lucky I am to have all that I do, I felt very grateful after such a speech. It was really good to hear from alumni just because of the fact that they were so relatable. They have been exactly where we are right now and it was great to get some advice and pick their brains. The Family Planning Victoria session on STI's and contraceptives was absolutely fantastic. Our speaker really connected with the entire group and gave us really relevant and important information. I really loved the Spin Chat session with Paul, it was really inspiring and made me want to cherish my life more.

Paul's presentation of his experiences of his injury and adapting to life again, was inspiring and encouraging. The bush dancing was great, I had a really fun time and was able to interact with new students that I hadn't had the chance to in the past and it was also a good workout. I think that this was a good way to meet people in the other specialties.

Harmony Day March 21 We get together on harmony day to celebrate our multicultural society. This year the Junior SRC made posters and brought in some delicious foods from different cultures. Many students came and tried the different foods. Posters promoting harmony day were stuck up on walls around the campus saying hello in different languages. We are all proud of our own individual heritages and backgrounds and we've all learnt and shared something new about everyone else's cultures. CASSIDY TRAN, YEAR 8 STUDENT

GYMNASTICS A few weeks ago we performed at the Gymnastics World Cup at Hisense Arena. We performed for the opening on two days. We were all nervous and excited because we would be performing in front of the world’s best gymnasts includ-ing Ali Raysman the runner up at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. We performed our AGG routine (Astetic Group Gym-nastics) and a fun display called Treasure. Our AGG group is the first AGG team in Australia. We all really enjoyed this experience and hope to do it again one day. RASHELLE FELDMAN, YEAR 9 STUDENT ALISA GINGINA, YEAR 9 STUDENT

Environment Day Last week was the VCASS environment week, and our main

focus was to spread awareness about what we use, and how

we can decrease the amount of waste we produce.

Throughout the week, posters were made for the different

specialist areas about how they can save paper, supplies and

take care of the planet while doing what we love! The senior

SRC created a QR code hunt through the school, which when

scanned, gives a link to a website some students made with

healthy recipes that are vegan or vegetarian, since the

production of meat has a large impact on global warming. If

you haven’t looked at it yet it’s definitely worth it!

On the Friday of Environment Week, we had ‘Green Day’.

During period 2, the school had an earth hour, so if it was

possible classes turned off lights and projectors to save a bit

of energy. The students were also encouraged to bring a

rubbish free lunch, which was actually very difficult and it

opened a lot of our eyes to how much rubbish we produce just

with our school lunches! And of course, VCASS couldn’t have

a green day without wearing green!! The week was a lot of fun

and has hopefully inspired people to love our beautiful planet

just a little bit more.

MUSIC

Our major project for Semester One is the collaboration of our choir and orchestra with the Monash Academy Orchestra. The Monash Academy Orchestra is an audition entry symphony orchestra based on the Clayton campus of Monash University consisting of students from the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and musicians from across the wider Monash campuses and community. The orchestra is committed to performing the works of Australian composers and we were delighted to have been invited last year to take part in the second of their 2017 Concert Series titled, “Vine Choral Symphony” conducted by Warwick Stengards. Program: Peter Sculthorpe’s "Earth Cry" Nigel Westlake’s "Out of the Blue" Graeme Koehne’s "Powerhouse" Carl Vine’s "Choral Symphony" Venue: Robert Blackwood Hall Date: Saturday 13

th May, 7:30pm

Admission: FREE, bookings now open via the Monash website: https://mapa.monash.edu/event/monash-academy-orchestra vine-chorale-symphony/ The VCASS choir and orchestra are involved in the Vine Symphony and the VCASS Orchestra in the Koehne and Sculthorpe works. The conductor, Warwick Stengards has extensive experience working with professional opera companies, choral groups and orchestras both in Australia and Europe. Last year Warwick conducted the VCASS orchestra to much acclaim for our “Rhapsody’ concert at the Melbourne Recital Centre. His training, guidance and care of young players are world’s best practice and we are greatly looking forward to working with him again. The cost of the project is $25 per student. Please complete the consent and medical forms. All these documents, including the rehearsal schedule, are posted on COMPASS in Community> School Documentation> Music dept. There are some rehearsals at VCASS and some at Monash University. Students are required to bring their own food and water to all rehearsals including evenings. There will be two microwaves and a fridge accessible to the students in the Green Room. Between the seating call and the concert on Saturday 13th May, Monash University will provide sandwiches and a drink to all VCASS students. We have hired coaches to transport students from VCASS to Monash University and back to VCASS on weeknights, however, parents may collect their children directly from Monash after these rehearsals if they wish to. We encourage parents to car pool for the two Saturday calls, the 6th and 12th May as there will be no coaches provided on these dates. Coaches and rehearsals will be supervised by VCASS staff. All music students are performing in the Vine “Choral Symphony” and these rehearsals have commenced. The first orchestral rehearsal is Monday 27th March at VCASS.

In addition our major project of the term will be the Monash Academy Orchestra / VCASS project. Or-chestral and choral rehearsals have started with the intense rehearsal period being from the 4

th May until

the concert on the 13th May at Robert Blackwood Hall.

The program is Sculthorpe’s "Earth Cry", Westlake’s "Out of the Blue", Koehne’s "Powerhouse" and ‘Vine’s "Choral Symphony". The VCASS Choir and Orchestra are involved in the Vine Symphony and VCASS Or-chestra involved in the Koehne and Sculthorpe. We ask that parents look carefully at the rehearsal sched-ule and organisations around this event posted on COMPASS under School Documentation. We wish our Chetham Exchange students, Ally Cho and Clare Juan all the very best for their trip to the UK at the start of next term accompanied by Michael Sargeant. We also look forward to the return of Michael Sargeant to his role as Head of Music at the start of week 3. Happy Easter to all our students and families and thank you for the great start to 2017. We reach the end of the term with many events to reflect on with pride and a sense of achievement. These include our Celebration Concert, performances at Top Class Music and the MRC Gala dinner. On 16

th March we welcomed back

alumni students Ziggy and Miles Johnston who presented selections of their Salon concert for our lunchtime concert series. This was followed by a fantastic night at the new Dizzy’s Jazz Café on Monday 20

th March. The Year 11

students performed their fabulous original compositions from the CD. ‘So Far’. These works were recorded over a ten-day period at the end of 2016 and edited and mastered this year. The CD is available for sale from the front office for $10. A great Easter gift!! The night at Dizzy’s continued after the launch of the CD with our senior Jazz Ensembles literally cooking up a storm to a warm and receptive audience. It is wonderful to see how these ensembles have come together after only five weeks. Another one of our VCE Chamber ensembles performed last week. The string quartet of Mia Berlin, Candice Yang, Indyana Kippin and Chang Il Yoo performed the 1

st Movement of

Dvorak’s ‘American Quartet’ at Collins St Baptist Church as part of the “Quartet on Collins” series presented by the Flinder’s Quartet. This week we hosted a very successful Double Bass Workshop directed by MSO members Emma Sullivan, Ben Hanlon and Damien Eckersley. Over 30 students from all over Melbourne and the region arrived to participate in the event. We are very grateful to Emma for her initiative in nurturing the study of this complex and beautiful instrument which is, to quote Emma, “ on the endangered instrument list”. See accompanying photo of the Recital Room with over 30 double basses – an amazing sight.

Our inaugural staff concert was also held this week featuring Dr Julie Haskell on fortepiano and violinist Isin Cakmakcioglu performing sonatas of Mozart and Mendelssohn. We thank them both for presenting this concert and for their fundraising for the ABCs and Rice school we support in Cambodia. The term was rounded off with all the Senior Ensembles presenting in our Chamber Recitals and the second of our Junior Lunchtime Concerts on Thursday. Next term is going to be busy with the Vocal Concert, Yr 7 and 10 Solo Concerts, Winter Concert and the Shepparton Tour.

DANCE

A photo from the past of Irmer and Anca (left) Photo of Anca

Fraenhaeuser (right)

Patrick Harding - Irmer and Anca Frankenhaeuser performed a short sequence of dances for our 10-12 dancers last Monday in our Theatre Studio. It was quite challenging and moving – beautiful too - to watch such mature artists explore their art. I include an email from ex-dancer and renowned theatre director Ariette Taylor. “Hi Tim, the above spelling is right. For your and your students information look them up on AUSTRALIAN DANCE ARTISTS. It is a wonderful website with the company doing the solos and duet that they performed. They work every year with the artist Ken Unsworth, he creates the environment - perhaps call it the design, but it is really an art installation and the 4 dancers work in and around it. Very special and stunning work. You might like to put something of this in the newsletter. It was great that they could perform it is your studio. Love, Ariette”

Arnold Classic

On the weekend (17-19 of March) I competed on the Arnold Classic for Taekwon-do. There were lots of very fit people there and we got to meet the famous man

himself...Arnold Schwarzenegger! It was really exciting to meet Arnold. He had a huge Martial Arts

demonstration just for him.

I had to work there for three days straight for about 10 hours (it was very tiring). I also got to meet my primary school friends from my previous school because they had an excursion. Watching so many events in one place was exciting! You wouldn't believe how many there were.

On Sunday was the day that Taekwon-do was on but we only had one mat to compete on. There were ITF patterns and sparring which are the events I competed in and there were also WTF patterns and sparring. I came second in patterns and second in sparring. It was quite surprising considering the competition was so high.

DANCE Serenade rehearsals over the term 2 holiday break for year 10– 12 dancers We were thrilled to given permission by the George Balanchine Trust to present Balanchine’s acclaimed ballet “Serenade” this year for our annual Malthouse season. One of the provisions given to perform any Balanchine work is that it be taught by a recognised Balanchine repetiteur. Eve Lawson formerly of New York City Ballet and, until recently, a Ballet Mistress of the Australian Ballet, will arrive in Melbourne to commence rehearsals the week of April 24

th.

Ms Lawson’s time with us is limited and we must fit in with her other commitments both here in Australia and in the USA. Therefore all dancers who are cast in Serenade will be required to attend daily rehearsals in the 2

nd week of the Term

2 break, Week July 10 – 14th.

At this stage we would anticipate that it would be mainly girls who are needed with possibly the two principal boys and their second casts. Casting will be finalised the Week 24

th April.

RAD @ VCASS RAD EXAMINATIONS – JUNE SESSION All exam entries must be with the VCASS office by Monday March 27

th. No credit card payments please. Proposed exam

dates are Saturday 10th June OR Saturday 17

th June.

AUTUMN SCHOOL Dates: April 3 – 7 at Dance World Studios South Melbourne. TERM 2 Classes for term will commence Week 17
