20 million people watched The Battle of the Somme in 1916, hoping to see a loved one on film. The War Office hoped they would leave the cinema believing the battle was a success.

What impact did the film have on audiences in 1916? What impact does it have now? How does the film try to control our response? Can we trust its depiction of the Battle of the Somme?

WAR REPORTING AND CINEMATOGRAPHY

9:15PM – 9:45PM

The Battle of the Somme brought the realities of war to cinema for the first time, and transformed the reporting of war.

What was the experience of filming The Battle of the Somme? Why did the cameramen use recreations – and what are the consequences? Is The Battle of the Somme a documentary or a drama?

THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME

10PM –11:15PM FILM

Watch The Battle of the Somme, the ground-breaking documentary film shot and screened in 1916, and inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.

The film features the beautiful musical score commissioned by IWM for the 90th anniversary of The Battle of the Somme, composed by Laura Rossi and performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Watch tWWItter – David Tindal’s Story, by Mark Gorton, double award winner at IWM’s 2014 Short Film Festival.

How might the Battle of Somme have been remembered if the men and women who fought and endured it had 21st century technology?

RAISING LAZARUS

8:45PM – 10PM

Charts the true story of Kat’s relative, Private Francois Lazarus from Grenada, who joined the British West Indies Regiment in 1915 to fight for Britain in the First World War. Kat Francois weaves a story of her discovery of her connection to a part of British history that she had previously not thought relevant, and how thousands of black soldiers volunteered for King & Country.

MAGIC LANTERN

TALES 10:45PM – 11:30PM

Using a magic lantern projector, poet & broadcaster Ian McMillan and documentary photographer Ian Beesley tell a story of the First World War from the point of view of men who survived it and of women who worked in the factories that oiled the wheels of war. The show reminds us that war is made by people who each have their own narrative of what happened in the First World War.

– Tickets are free, and are available from the Information Desk (Level 0).
