General:
Address who counts which team Decide when to do stick checks, who gets whom Decide how to communicate on stalling Who has whistle on Single Side out of bounds. Communicate penalties to partners. Know the time on the game clock:
Before a quarter starts – should read 12:00 Once a quarter starts – it should start on the whistle On time-outs – it should stop when whistle blows On penalties – announce what time penalty will release

Reminders
Hustle to get into the correct position and make the right calls. If a coach asks a question and you cannot stop to talk, let him know that you’ll be back and will
speak with him when you have the chance. When you do engage the coach, listen first and then explain your call. If a coach is just commenting out loud, you may not need to respond. Use the 5-step ladder with coaches:
Provide a verbal warning. Conduct, a technical foul, to take the ball away. Conduct, a 30 sec. technical foul, time serving. Unsportsmanlike Conduct (USC), 1 min., non-releasable. Second USC, 1+ min., non-releasable, coach ejected.Skip steps only when justified should flagrant misconduct occur.
Remember SAO: Safety, Advantage/Disadvantage, and the Obvious. Do not create trouble for yourself or be too good of a referee; you are there to officiate the game,
not to “find” penalties. Grant the timeout if the player had possession when timeout was called, even if it quickly comes
loose. Count the field so neither team starts a man up or down by accident. If you point the wrong way or call the wrong color for possession, notify all of the correct call and
give them time to get the right personnel on the field. Get the call right by talking with your partner. It may look sloppy to change an improper call, but it
is always better to get it right. As always . . . review the rule book, scan the officiating forums, and consult with peers and mentors
on any questions

Pre-faceoff
Bench and Single give “not ready” signal Bench ensures clock set, table ready, sub area
clear before start of each period When ready, Single points toward goal he will
cover After point from Single and when Bench is
ready, Bench points toward goal he will cover After point from Bench, Face-off official starts
face-off (Face-off official need not look at Single)
Positions rotate clockwise to start each period The Referee takes all face-offs in overtime
8
Face-off mechanics
For the opening face-off of period: Bench lines up on bench-side wing line right of midfield Single lines up on the far-side wing line left of midfield Face-off lines up on the same side of the field as Single For other face-offs, Face-off official goes right if the goal was
scored on the right and vice versa On the whistle, both Bench and Single take several steps
toward their goals. Watch wing violation, face-off players, and restraining line
If the ball moves toward Face-off official’s goal, Single must cover that goal until he is verbally called off or until there is a turnover.
Face-off official watches shooter & passer until he takes over goal.
Single has 10 or 20 second count.

Face-off violations
Multiple whistles, Face-off official signals violation quickly
New Lead heads for Goal Line Extended (GLE); Single may need to cover
New Trail gets player to position, starts play quickly, then sweeps sub area
Middies may sub during ensuing dead ball, but attack and defense are not released if foul is technical.
12
Goal scored
Lead runs to crease, signals goal for 2–3 seconds, watches defense, gets ball
Single signals goal only if Lead doesn’t see it Single watches for late hits/post-goal issues, moves into
attack area, watches offense Trail also watches for late hits and monitors the both
teams and the benches Lead gives ball to Single, then goes to the far side to
become Single (not to the left as in two-man) Single becomes Face-off official, goes to the midline and
does not step over; Face-off official holds up ball, puts it down, and stands over it until ready for face
Trail becomes Bench, stays on same side of field, and clicks timer when Face-off official has ball at midfield.

Transition
If defense gains or is awarded possession:Lead Trail Trail Lead Single Single
Trail stays with ball, has 4 second count Lead has quick offside on loose ball but must
beat ball to goal Single gets to cone, has 20-second count, 10-
second count, and primary offside; may need to hustle to help on quick offside to release Lead
Trail has 4-second count, subs, secondary offside, then jogs into play
16
20-second timer mechanics
Single has 20-second timer Trail has 4 second count, if any Trail and Single give “reset” signal Do a hand count for 4-second count Trail stays with the ball during clear When restarting count (play-on, double
change of possession), give “reset” signal
17
Trail sweeping sub area
Trail stops at the first cone and watches subs in transition
When contested subs are completed, Trail sweeps the box and jogs into the play
Trail should take a position 5 yards above and 5 yards in from the corner of the attack area

Trail responsibilities
Trail verbally notifies Lead upon arrival in play Trail should keep a wide view and watch for
late hits and away-from-the-ball fouls except when Trail is “on”
Once in the play, the Trail has count except when the ball comes out in Single’s alley
Trail will call Lead’s sideline, but Lead needs to stay on the GLE and keep play in front, even if Lead has to go to the sideline for the restart

On a contested
end-line play or a shot, the L must

End line coverage
T
S
In this situation, S covers the GLE until L gets back
S can cover the GLE because T has the other goal
T may need to move into box to
help with calls above crease
Positioning the lead on the end line and the single on the goal line is a good mechanic to use during
the last 2 minutes of the game.
25
“On” and “off” officials
The “on” official watches the ball and calls most fouls there (e.g., push, hold, slash, trip, illegal body check)
The “off” official watches everything else (e.g., crease, interference, illegal screen)
When player is in transition from one zone to another, whoever the player is moving toward is the “on” official.

Counts
Single always has the 20-second and first count across midfield
Until Trail is in the play, Single has the count unless the ball comes out in Lead’s alley
Once the Trail is in the play, he has the count unless the ball comes out in the Single’s alley
If you do not have the count and the ball goes into the box in your alley, hand up for 2–3 seconds, then point into box
Switch arms if one count ends and a new count begins Use “reset” signal (twirl finger in the circle overhead) to
indicate new count on changes of possession or after a play-on
Trail has the 4 second goalie count
40
Restarts
The “on” official usually has the restart When the ball is in Lead’s alley and Trail is in
the play, Lead has restart if GLE or below, Trail has restart if above GLE.
Make eye-contact before restart before face-offs and after penalties, timeouts, and out of bounds.
Quick restart on end line out-of-bounds and change-of-possession technical fouls
41
End line out of bounds
Lead covers all contested plays behind the goal; Single covers goal until Lead returns
Lead must chase shots to the end line and has all end line out-of-bounds calls
Play can start inside the attack area for an end line out of bounds if there are no fouls.
Whistle simultaneously with dead-ball signal For a player stepping out on the end line, point to the
end line with a sweeping gesture Point direction of play; don’t point across body Lead must get back to GLE before restarting play unless
there is a contested play on the end line Give Goalie 5 seconds to return Start a 5 second count if no player picks up the ball

Live-ball vs. dead ball fouls(on opposing teams)
For “live-ball, live ball,” you have simultaneous fouls and no free clear (“Live-ball, live-ball, leave it”)
For “live-ball, dead ball,” enforce in the order they occurred and award a free clear (“Live ball, dead ball, dead center”)
In both cases, common penalty time is non-releasable.
