Welcome to LondonThe world has witnessed an incredible

century of science – countless discoveries, inventions and endeavours that would havebeen unimaginable when the ScienceMuseum came into being in 1909. Today,at a time of rapid and radical change forhumankind, the Science Museum iscommitted to becoming the best place inthe world for people to enjoy science, andgain insight and inspiration. Our centenaryis a moment of reflection and celebrationbut is also an opportunity to look towardsthe future.

Museum of the Future is the vision of the Science Museum and incrediblyexciting. As the Science Museum reaches 100 years we aim to celebrate theachievement of this great institution, whilst maintaining our focus on the future:the future of the Science Museum, and the future of Great Britain and the world.Museum of the Future places these three concerns equally at its core. WhenMuseum of the Future becomes a reality the Science Museum will be closerthan ever to achieving its aim of being the best place in the world to enjoyscience, an attractive destination for visitors from across the UK and abroad. As Britain increases investment in 'high tech' industries the importance of theScience Museum will grow as a place to spark the curiosity and creativity of thescientists, engineers and entrepreneurs of the future. And as the world changesever faster, the Science Museum will be relied upon more than ever to tell thecaptivating narratives of past, present and future that our collections embody.

I look forward to seeing you at our Centenary celebrations this summer.

Originally composed for piano in 1874,there have been many orchestrations ofMussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibitionincluding that for brass, wind, organ andeven accordion, but this is believed to bethe first arrangement for strings.Mussorgsky wrote the piece following theposthumous exhibition of over 400 worksof art by his friend Viktor Hartmann, arranged after the artist's death in 1873.The music depicts an imaginary tour ofthe collection with titles of individualmovements alluding to particularcanvases. The piece is multi-faceted;depicting humour, tragedy and a sense ofthe macabre.

Following the tradition of conductorssuch as Stokowski, who regularly wrotearrangements for their orchestras, JacquesCohen, founder and Musical Director ofthe Isis Ensemble, has written thisarrangement to exploit the outstandingvirtuosity of the orchestra’s musicians.Formed in 2005, the Isis Ensemble hasestablished an international reputation for

excellence. Its members are internationalsoloists, high-profile chamber musicians, and experienced orchestral players withcollective experience of virtually everymajor professional orchestra in the UK.

The concert will also feature Elgar'spoignant Summer Serenade as well asVaughan Williams' delightful OboeConcerto. Outstanding oboist EmilyPailthorpe will perform the solo in thispastoral evocation of the traditionalEnglish landscape.

Tickets are £15 and available on thedoor or from 07875 610941. For moreinformation, see www.isisensemble.com

JACQUES COHENLondon-based composer/conductor

Jacques Cohen is the founder andMusical Director of the acclaimed IsisEnsemble. He explains:

‘I started composing at a very youngage. For as long as I can remember, I’vehad music going round in my head – bothmy own and other people's. I had my firstpiece performed when I was just elevenyears old and first conducted at sixteen.I’d written a piece for my youth orchestraand the conductor didn't fancy conductingit himself so he asked if I'd like to do it.

‘I studied at Oxford and the RoyalCollege of Music and since then I’veworked my way around the world. Recentengagements include conductingRomania’s premier orchestra – the GeorgeEnescu Philharmonic – as well Bulgaria’sprestigious ensemble The Sofia Soloists. One of my most enlightening jobs waswith the Bombay Chamber Orchestra.

‘People think conducting is glamorousbut the time spent actually conducting aconcert is only the tip of the iceberg. Mostof the hard work is done in seclusion athome. While an actor, singer orinstrumentalist only has to learn his or herlines, the conductor has to know every partand understand how they all fit together.

‘Running an orchestra can be difficultbecause it’s hard to get funding in thiscountry. We’ve had great reviews for theIsis Ensemble’s debut CD but we had torecord it in a church in freezing conditions.

‘I’m lucky to have a varied career, notjust working in different places but also ina diversity of music: choral, orchestral andopera from the 16th century to today, aswell as jazz bands. The Isis Ensembleplays stunning music from the classicalrepertoire but we’re also very committedto performing new work. I’d like to thinkthat our concerts are never boring!

‘I am one of the few people who reallyis both a composer and a conductor. Mostof my contemporaries are more biasedtowards one discipline or the other. Forme, the idea that a composer doesn'tperform and work with other musicians isa strange one.’ Jacques Cohen

ISIS ENSEMBLE SUMMER SERENADEThe critically acclaimed Isis Ensemble will be performing the

fourth concert in their popular annual Summer Serenade serieson July 9 at 19.30. The stunning St James's Church, Piccadilly, will resonate with Elgar’s Serenade, Vaughan Williams’ OboeConcerto and the world premiere of a new arrangement forstrings of Mussorgsky’sPictures at an Exhibition byJacques Cohen.

The choir was started by Dr Paul Kelly,a medical researcher who lives in Lusaka, and Simon Kalommo, a talented musicianwho was born and bred there. Both menhad a musical history and were involved inat least two choirs each.

One day they were ruminating over howsome wonderfully talented Zambian singershad never heard the great choirs of theworld nor heard a symphony orchestra anddecided to do something about it.

After securing a sponsorship in 2006,the choir was named and formed. Throughtwice weekly rehearsals and fund raisingconcerts, enough money was raised tobring the choir to sing in London for thefirst time in 2007.

An unforgettable experience for all themembers was walking up the back steps ofSt Paul's Cathedral and emerging from thedark stone tunnel into the fantastic space ofthe the amazing cathedral.

The choir comprises students andprofessionals from a variety ofbackgrounds who love singing.

This will be their third tour to Londonand performances will take place atSt John's Smith Square, Ely and BurySt Edmunds.

15‘TIME AND TIDE’ AT HAY HILLGALLERY

‘Time and Tide’ is a joint show of themost recent work by internationallyrecognised London-based Russianphotographers Al Lapkovsky and KatyaEvdokimova. These works will beexhibited alongside seminal works byAuguste Rodin at the Hay Hill Gallery,23 Cork Street from Monday 29 June –Saturday 18 July.

Both Lapkovsky and Evdokimovahave won many photographic awardsincluding Professional Photographer ofthe Year and the InternationalPhotographic Awards and often worktogether. Their clients range from Bosch,The Sunday Times, Vauxhall, TheIndependent and the Royal ShakespeareCompany, and regularly contribute tointernational newspapers and magazines.

Lapkovsky’s collection of works inthis exhibition juxtapose the surreal andthe ordinary enabling the viewer to takea leap of imagination and look at ourordinary lives through the realms offantasy.

The Ghost City Project offers aglimpse of the future that awaits ourfamiliar urban environment, shouldglobal warming continue. This can beseen in ‘London Ghost City 9’, where theiconic image of Big Ben has a surrealdecay about it (pictured).

In his black and white works ‘Project55-5’ and ‘Project 55-2’, the artist’sconcept began with a close up of a violinplayer to illustrate the relationshipbetween the artist and his instrument. This concept was expanded when twoalmost identical images were juxtaposedas a diptych, with vital elements

changed to heighten the play on reality. In ‘Project 55-5’ the piano has beenremoved, so the pianist seems to ‘play’the ‘memory’ of the piano. In the second‘Project 55-2’ image, the artist continuesto play the violin despite being nude, completely altering his personality fromimage to image.

Evdokimova’s series ‘Alter Ego’ on theother hand depict the human body as an artwork, offering the viewer glimpses, viewedthrough a veil of hand-made paper asthough seen through an old and decayedwall, torn to review the naked flesh beneath. The figures are backlit, illustrating hermastery of chiaroscuro, and perhapsreferring back to the Indonesian shadowpuppets and magic lantern shows ofyesterday.

This exhibition offers an unprecentedopportunity to view these works by theseleading contemporary photographers, alongside some 50 of Auguste Rodin’sseminal bronzes. The nude studies of Eve,Age of Bronze and The Thinker all have aresonance with Evdokimova’s studies.

THE OBSERVERAT THE NATIONAL THEATRE

The observer herself is being carefullyobserved in Matt Charman's interestingand, it would seem, well-researched newplay set in a fictitious former colony inWest Africa as preparations are made forits first democratic elections.

The incumbent president is expected toromp home with a resounding victory, butthe initial results prove inconclusive andFiona, deputy chief of the internationalobservation team, becomes aware that byextending the polling hours – and therebyenabling more of the rural population tocast their votes – a change of governmentmight become a possibility. But herposition is meant to be completelyimpartial, and Charman raises importantquestions of whether intervention – withthe best intentions and the most fair-minded of motives – is permissible oreven in the best interests of those it ismeant to benefit.

Anna Chancellor gives a fine, determinedperformance as the hardworking anddedicated Fiona, and is well supported by,amongst others, Chuk Iwuji's localtranslator, Lloyd Hutchinson's cynical BBCjournalist, James Fleet's somewhat seedyForeign Office civil servant (whose covertreports on her activities include interceptedpersonal e-mails to her husband), and CyrilNri in several roles including an intimidatingGeneral.

Richard Eyre's fluent and engrossingproduction makes it clear that what wasmeant to be a free and fair process has beentainted by offstage violence, and designerRob Howell incorporates a tension-boostingticker tape style to monitor the countdown tothe final result.

A VISIONARY NEW PAINTER OFTHE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS

For her second exhibition with theFrancis Kyle Gallery, the Scottish painterWendy Sutherland has assembled abody of paintings completed over sometwo years which explore and articulate avision of landscape in the north-eastHighlands of Scotland as dynamic as itis lyrical. In works which can border onabstraction without losing a crucialsense of place, Sutherland’s‘conversation’ with her canvases chartsher relationship with her naturalsurroundings. While every painting isstill specific to a particular landscape inits genesis, frequently these works takeon a universal dimension where distanceand proximity may fuse, creating abeguiling ambiguity.

‘Each painting,’ Sutherlandcomments, ‘I treat as an individual withits own demands as to what medium itrequires. Pieces will vary from graphiteand oil to a combination of ink andshellac. I try to listen to the subject andallow it to lead me in the direction thatbest reflects the mood or atmosphere’.Concerns such as these indicate anelement of high seriousnessunderpinning all Sutherland’s works.

Wendy Sutherland graduated fromEdinburgh College of Art with FirstClass Honours in 1997 and has gone onto receive some ten major awards for herlandscape work, including JudgesCommendation, Highland Open (1998)and Awards to Artists, Highlands andIslands Arts and Scottish Arts Council(2001), holding seven one-personexhibitions in the United Kingdom andCanada over the past ten years. She hasundertaken several public commissionssince 1999 including EdinburghInternational Conference Centre and UHIMillennium Institute. Still in her earlythirties, Sutherland identified early on asher primary goal an evolvinginterpretation of the landscape of theScottish Highlands today and is alreadyconsidered a leading figure in this field.

Francis Kyle is in Maddox Street, W1.
