Accompanying video

presentations by Alan

McConnell document our

travels in the American

Southwest. A list of the

nine videos appears with

Alan McConnell’s

statement and are

available to view online.

We have traveled from Indiana to explore the American Southwest early

each spring for more than 15 years. The canyons, mountains and

deserts of the Colorado Plateau and surrounding area continue to draw

us back to create images based on these unique western landscapes, and enjoy the

spiritual enrichment and inspiration that we acknowledge in our artwork.

We are following a tradition of American artists

going to the American Southwest to paint and create

images. Artists like Indiana’s modernist painter, Victor

Higgins, Indianapolis born printmaker Garo Antreasian,

and many non-Hoosiers like Georgia O’keefe, Ernest

Blumenschein, Maynard Dixon and Ed Mell, who paints

landscapes in the style of Dixon today.

Our exhibit consists of watercolors, large format

photographs and color drawings. The watercolors were

painted “plein air”. The drawings and of course the

photographs are done on site too, and like the paintings

refined after returning home.

Sometimes long hikes over rough terrain at the edge

of day bring us to amazing places we can only find in Utah,

Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado.

We hope you enjoy our work and find it suitable for

exhibiting.

More time for my creative endeavors

The first time I encountered the

American Southwest, specifically

the Colorado Plateau in the four

corners region, I was knocked

out by the scale, space, light,

color and the fantastic stone

formations that dotted the

horizon. This ever changing

desert landscape along with its

red rock canyons and geologic

monuments has a mystical quality

that is truly beyond imagination.

As an artist and designer I became

obsessed with transferring these

impressions into the medium

of watercolor. Working on site

(plein air) utilizing my skill in

watercolor and drawing from

my background as a graphic

designer I have focused my energy

on producing work somewhere

between documentation and

personal expression. As my

work in the Southwest evolves I

see more expressive watercolor

images surfacing within my

imagination to match the eternal

imagination I see out there across

the shimmering red desert and the

cobalt blue sky.

Photographers Statement

Scenes of the Natural World

My interest in photography started in high school. My first en-

counter with the camera and the associated darkroom procedures

occurred with a two week-long mini-course at my small Midwest-

ern school in the early 70’s. Since then I have gradually refined

my skills and interest. Over time, it became obvious to me that

I loved scenes of the natural world, as well as subjects of histori-

cal significance. If you browse through the collection on my web

site, you will notice that I do not mass-produce a large amount of

images. I prefer a slower, more methodical approach to achieve a

fine art photograph. I place my images into gallery themes that

emulate my way of thinking about the world around us. More

than 80% of my large format images are black and white. I

feel that color can sometimes be a distraction if used in a scene.

Another large format photographer that I admire once said that

black and white brings together a sort of “oneness” of all the

objects in an image. If an individual has a predisposition for a

particular color, it could draw their attention away from what was

intended. The only time I’ll use color is if the color itself is the

main subject.

My color landscape drawings are explorations; making authentic and expressive images on paper that are informed by real land-scapes in the American West. I translate what I see and experi-ence there, and make images that express what I feel about land-scapes of the Colorado Plateau; the canyons, rock formations and deserts. I celebrate these western places because of their unique and spiritual qualities. I utilize a visual vocabulary learned when studying design and fine arts with William Crutchfield, Harry Davis, Sarah Burns, Art Weber and other fine teachers at the Herron School of Art and Design in In-dianapolis, a traditional studio art school. Both my graphic design and fine art work require consideration of the two dimensional space, the scale, color, and ar-rangement of elements. Developing my visual language and shaping a personal content is a primary motivation. I explore technique and work for original-ity in both my design and my fine art work. I want to create images that are unique and memorable.
