Becoming People Manager- Learning from 3-ldiots The intelligent move with which the movie came, led to setting of a new landmark in making people awake wit certain realities which everybody knows but wish not to accept. Irrespective of all goody and the harsh realities that the movie protracted there are many lessons that as a HR manager can be drawn for effective workforce management. The essential qualities for a HR manager (also applicable to other managers) that were reflected from it were as follows - 1) A good planner and a crisis manager in handling people . As an HR manager it is expected from him to be a good planner and resource provider along with being a good forecaster and a analytical visualizer at the time of difficulty. Unlike Rancho who knew how to handle the difficult seniors and a crisis manager not only for self but also for others, it is expected from a HR manager to be a tough master for difficult employees and be exemplary in a way to make people free from boundaries of old taboos and traditions .Thus he is expected to be like a Fresh air and an initiator. 2) Technical mastery, conceptual clarity and practicality· Apart from being a resource generator and a man with multi-facet personality, technical mastery in the subject and clarity in the concepts which could be used in a practical sense .This will help in generating a better direction in goal setting and briefing the role expected from employees. 3) Not be a rule book but a direction setter· The efficiency of a Manger is not defined by the degrees he as, the brand of college he belonged to but the knowledge and utility of that knowledge which can be used in becoming more creative and innovative. Creating knowledge base in the form of intellectual capital by applying innovative ways will result in better shaping of the whole organization and not a particular department. 4) A multi-facet personality- As an HR manager with different roles that he is expected to achieve multifarious roles and so should be the personality to provide completeness. As a team player, a morale booster, a good motivator, an empathetic companion, a soul mate. 5) Humorous and an informal team developer· Irrespective of all hurdles and difficulties an HR manager is expected to be a master of good sense of humor which will help in creating an informal environment which will help in creating a sense of friendliness, ownership and mutuality among each other .An informal environment will also help in generating inter-departmental networking and linkage with each other. This will as a result help in overall development of organization, building 2- way communication among people across department. 6) Generating Creativity and innovation - A good HR manager should be creative enough to generate such innovative and creative ideas which will help in making people innovative, lead to optimal resource allocation , make other like followers also creative enough to generate that extra ordinary that will help in achieving the super ordinate goals. 7) A balanced personality - An effective HR manager is expected to have a balanced personality which should be a better mix of possessing a balanced Happiness Quotient, Emotional quotient by way of which he can judge and control all emotions which is a necessary part in handling of employees. It is the balance of these emotions which the character Rancho as an HR manager reflected by consistently moving successfully towards his goals as well as guiding and helping others to achieve their goals by stabilizing the emotions while directing others, assessing them and also creating an informal environment along with targeting towards future. 8) Future -oriented and long term approach and a good change manager - As a proactive player and good forecaster an HR manager is expected to be targeting all affords for a long term along with taking people together in a participative manner thus generating consensus and benefiting everybody. He should serve as a change agent which can not as a revolution but in an evolutionary way help in bringing change in organization by taking people together. 9) A humanistic approach - An effective HR manager is expected to develop a humanistic approach in handling individuals. Unnecessary pressure creation leads to employees resulting in resignation and looking for other better options. Even if they stay in organization they become unproductive, frustrated and stressed resulting into causing loss to physical, mental and emotional health, thus hampering both self and organization. 10) Ethical and value based· An HR manager is expected to be a value based and practice and preach ethics and moral values .Until and unless such values come to picture. Managing people for long run becomes difficult .Such values help in taking into consideration the technical, conceptual, human and design skills in consideration a and this will also help in practicing justice and equity. Overall, an HR manager has to run his best show with best resource utilization,,making people productive and efficient and making people plan ,lead organize, delegate. He should have the ability to create a productive environment .He should possess good communication skills by way of which he can convey the expressed and unexpressed message .A manager is not only needed to provide role and goal clarity but also should be able to define "Success ", for example goals should be realistic, and select a bottom-up deadline for people. Interaction should be matched up with regular one to one meeting as and session. The character of Rancho thus when analyzed in a managerial way gives so many directions in understanding that how creative, innovative an HR manager can be. This will help not only in making the organization better but also in making individuals the real Leaders. ~
