LISBONhistorical landmarks and attractions in the area. To the south,Costa da Caparica, a fishing village, also has wonderfulbeaches and allows you to see what a traditional Portuguesefishing village is like.

Historical Background

If you take a long look at Lisbon, you realize that it is differentfrom all other cities. Finding out why wouldn't be a waste oftime. It would involve a voyage between the seven hills onwhich the city is built, and centuries of history in districts suchas Alfama, Castelo and Mouraria. Discovering Lisbon involvestaking some time to notice the small details, the stone pavings, the tiles on the floor, the iron on the verandas and the fountainsfound in the typical gardens. The history of Lisbon can be foundin the views from the majestic castle, and on the brows of eachand every hill. Lisbon is not only about the past, it is also aboutthe here and now. Through its modern business districts, andthe new avenues which are springing up all the time, Lisbonproves that it is a city in constant development.Origins

It is documented that there has been a human presence inLisbon for at least 300,000 years, after remains were foundrecently in this area. It is thought that the early settlers huntedand fished for food, in a completely different ecosystem to theone in place nowadays. Excavations in the Serra de Monsantofound that the settlers already produced pottery, which theytraded, and that they already began to farm the land.

Ulysses and his men saw a flash of lightning fall on the spotwhere Lisbon is now located and start a massive conflagration. On closer inspection they found a fiery sphere, with thefollowing inscription, 'On this foundation, lay the first stone ofmy city'. Ulysses then did as the inscription commanded, andnamed the city Ulisaypo or Olissopo. It is from there, accordingto legend, that Lisbon got its name.

The Mosteiro dos Jeronimos monastery was the biggest

construction made in the era of the discoveries. Built during thereign of Manuel I, nicknamed the 'adventurer' owing to theriches he came by in India, it is a fine example of the'Manueline' style of architecture, which highlighted a maritimetheme. In those days, the banks of the river Tagus were closer, and it was possible to watch the boats coming in to port, ladenwith the spices that brought so much wealth to Portugal.

This enduring structure watches over Lisbon from the highesthill in the city's center. During the Christian Reconquista, thecastle played an important role in reclaiming the country backfrom the Moors. The castle was later dedicated to SaintGeorge, thus earning its name Castelo de S.Jorge.

During those Maritime discoveries, Portugal used its riches toexpand the city, much like many other cities in that time. Aroyal palace was built in the 'Ribeira' and a new thoroughfare;'Rua Nova' was created and quickly became the newcommercial center, now known as the 'Baixa'. The Praa doRossio and the Terreiro do Passo, which became a meetingplace for the locals were also constructed. The 'Casa de India'was founded, and it was here that all the business was takencare of and all along the banks of the river, beautiful homeswere being built for the aristocrats of the time, like themagnificent 'Palacio Corte Real' and the very famous 'Casa dosBicos', built by Afonso de Albuquerque's son.

A number of religious buildings were also constructed, examples being the Jeronimos Convent and the Mother of Godconvents. An urbanization plan was also being considered, thislater became the district of Bairro Alto.

Manuel I continued the development of the city and the Rossioand the Torre de Belem were built between 1515 and 1521.Between 1650 and 1755, the Palace of Necessidades wasconstructed and notably the majestic Aqueduct, built between1713 and 1748, which brought many benefits to the city ofLisbon.

This destructive earthquake, also known as the Great LisbonEarthquake, was one of the most deadly earthquakes that hasever occurred, with its effects killing thousands of people and

Yet it was from theruins of the earthquake that the new Lisbon rose, with newarchitecture as well as new perspectives on science, politics, and philosophy.

Dining & Drinking

Even though Portugal is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, theatmosphere is still typically Mediterranean and the boisterousnightlife is not necessarily surprising, given the Portuguesepenchant for chatting and drinking in bars at any givenopportunity. The real culture of Lisboa is in the streets; thepeople are used to going to bars, drinking and talking until lateat night. But be warned: although clubs don't normally openuntil 11pm, it's best to arrive before midnight as entrance feesincrease with the size of the crowd.

Barrio Alto In Bairro Alto, there is a wide choice of bars andrestaurants. Here, the restaurants are small and welcoming. You can dine in some good restaurants such as Bota Alta. Ifyou want to visit a nightclub with a wide variety of music genresthat you can dance the night away to, Incognito lives up to itsname with its sign-less entrance. There are also more modernclubs such as Fragil which is a fun venue for both gay andstraight revelers.

Alfama/Mouraria In Alfama/Mouraria, the oldest area in Lisbon, you can have dinner and appreciate Fado in restaurants suchas Parreirinha de Alfama. Later at night, you can go to sometaverns or to the rather expensive, very popular, but extremelyselective club, Lux-Fragil, which is rumored to be one of thebest clubs in Lisbon. Parque das Naoes also remains a favoritehaunt.

Rato In Rato, you will find many good restaurants, including theexcellent Conventual, built in an ancient convent, and the Café

Sao Bento. After dinner, if you want to have a drink, it is betterto move on somewhere else.

Parque das Naoes In the eastern part of Lisbon is the Parquedas Naoes, the site upon which the last world exposition of thecentury was held. This spacious place is now full of bars andrestaurants and is another district to visit when you want topaint the town red but on a more casual note than Docas. Fordining, if you're ready to spend more than just a pretty pennyon a meal, Capricciosa is a great choice to try some fineseafood and Italian fare. But if drinking is the main attractionwhen you dine, then Clube Cais has a plethora of beers andhas a great dancing atmosphere. And after dinner, the fun cancontinue because bars and clubs are aplenty.

Campo Pequeno In Campo Pequeno, the restaurants are moremodest but still offer quality food. Our choice would be O Funil.

Alcantara/Avenida 24 de Julho In Alcantara/Avenida 24 deJulho, the atmosphere is quite lively. This area also has manybars and nightclubs. Try Blues Café, or the Speakeasy. If youare a bit peckish after leaving the nightclubs, buy a hot dog inthe caravans that stand along the avenue or enjoy a hotcinnamon bun.

Estoril/Costa do Sol Fifteen miles from Lisbon is the Costa doSol. Cascais, a fishing village which has many goodrestaurants, like Restaurante Visconde da Luz and theCervejaria Luz Mar. In Estoril, you can dine at the Sentinela daNoite. Then, after dinner, try your luck at the Casino Estoril. Inthe summer, you can have a drink in the bars close to thebeach. There is also Nuts Club, the most frequented nightclubin Cascais. In Guincho, three miles from Cascais, you can dinein some luxury restaurants like Portal da Guia or the Fortalezado Guincho.
