SWIMMING CLUB 2018/2019 SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE

The Kondinin Swimming Club entered its second season at the new swimming pool this year, and building

on the success of last season has continued to grow. Over the summer period each Wednesday afternoon

all three groups, the Tadpoles, the Dolphins and the Sharks, were well attended with all the children

showing marked improvements in their confidence, ability, technique and endurance in the water. This was

coupled with time trials on Sunday mornings which was also well supported and assisted the children in

preparing for their swimming carnivals and swim meets. Of particular note, three of our regular swimming

club members, Deacon Blurton, Brock Blurton and Bridie Northey were all age champions at their respective

swimming carnivals and also did very well at swimming meets in both Corrigin and Narembeen, with Deacon

Blurton also winning champion boy for the inter-school swimming championships that were held on the

22nd

March 2019. Well done Deacon.

It was wonderful to see all the children enjoying and participating in swimming club, and it was no easy task

to give the awards for the most improved and most consistent children for each group. This year the awards

went to the following children:

Tadpoles Group

Most Improved – Kieran Blurton

Most Improved – Dane Wilkins

Dolphins Group

Most Improved – Brock Blurton

Most Consistent – David Valenta

Sharks Group

Most Improved – Bridie Northey

Most Consistent – Angela Andrews

A huge thank you to pool Managers Shaun and Ann Franich who were strong supporters of the swimming

club, organising a sausage sizzle for children on Wednesdays and opening the pool early on Sundays for

the time trials. Thank you also to all the parents, grandparents and community members who helped out

each week in running the sessions, time keeping and lap recording and cooking the BBQ, it was all greatly

appreciated.

At the end of the season we were fortunate enough to have Karen Vlastuin the swimming coach from

Boddington Swimming Club meet with the Kondinin Swimming Club to give a stroke technique session to

club members and provide us with some useful pointers on how we can develop our swimming club in the

future. In response to this we are looking to send 3 interested persons to attend a ASCTA Swim Australia

Teacher Competitive Strokes Course in November 2019. If you are interested in this please contact Tory on

0412 913 211 or [email protected].

See you all next season!

THANK YOU, for an amazing

season. See you next

March 28, 2019 WSFR

Media Release - Federal Government $70M Funding Announcement

Wednesday 27th March saw an announcement of the Federal Government’s $70 million commitment through the Roads of Strategic Importance (ROSI) initiative for the Wheatbelt Secondary Freight Route (WSFR). The Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack joined representatives of the WSFR in Bindoon to mark the funding announcement. The Deputy PM, who is also the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, has been very receptive to what the project group is trying to achieve with the WSFR network. This will fund road improvements which will enhance productivity and driver safety across the Wheatbelt. The WSFR encompasses 80 connecting routes with over 4,400km of roads across the Wheatbelt comprising 42 local governments, The WSFR Working Group has been working for the past three years to secure funding for a project of strategic importance for the agricultural and transport sectors. The announcement will bring together the 42 Wheatbelt shires and the Federal Government to identify and prioritise projects across this network in coming months. These roads are local government managed roads, identified as ‘secondary freight routes’ and are essential for supporting key freight supply chains that support grain, mining, general freight and the tourism industry. This means they carry a significant and highly valued freight task but are not located on a state or federal road. ROSI will deliver works such as road realignments, road sealing, strengthening and widening, flood immunity, pavement rehabilitation and bridge and culvert upgrades, creating a more reliable and safer road network and improve access for higher capacity vehicles. The road upgrades are part of the Australian Government’s $3.5 billion nationwide investment over the next decade through ROSI, to ensure the nation's key freight roads efficiently connect agricultural and mining regions to ports, airports and other transport hubs. Cr Ricky Storer, Chair of the WSFR Working Group, said the roads identified for upgrades were essentially the weakest link in the network. “They are no longer fit for purpose and restrict the size and type of vehicle that can be used to carry out the required transport task,” he said. “Further, the burden of managing these roads falls to local governments, and not necessarily in a fair or equitable way. Cr Storer said the safety of road users was always the number one priority of the taskforce and today’s announcement would create a safer environment for all those travelling within the network. The WSFR group’s long-term goal is to secure funding support of approximately $500 million for staged capital works over a 10 to 20-year time frame. It is a great example of collaboration amongst regional local governments who so far have provided in excess of $750K in-kind contribution. The WSFR would like to thank all federal and state members of parliament, 42 local governments, Main Roads WA, RDA Wheatbelt, Wheatbelt Development Commission and WALGA who have assisted the Working Group in the project development process bringing this initial funding to fruition. All enquiries. Chairperson – Ricky Storer (President Shire of Koorda) Deputy Chairperson – Katrina Crute (President Shire of Brookton) Project Manager – Garrick Yandle (CEO Shire of Kulin)

MEDIA RELEASE 02 April 2019 Calling for the Federal Government to increase the Regional Arts Fund Regional Arts Australia, with support from Country Arts WA, has launched a new campaign, VOTE 1 REGIONAL ARTS, in the lead up to the federal election, calling for an increase to the Regional Arts Fund.

The Regional Arts Fund is one of the most successful cultural funding programs supporting arts and culture in regional, remote and rural Australia. Between 2012 and 2016 nationally, the Regional Arts Fund supported 1,458 projects; 3,979,899 participants; 843 professional development opportunities; 1,943 artists and arts workers and 3,015 partnerships. Regional Arts Australia, with support from Country Arts WA, is calling for an increase of at least $2 million per year for four years to the fund. This will restore the Regional Arts Fund to its pre-2010 value by lifting the total value of the fund to $22.5 million over four years, beginning in July 2020. Increasing funding to the Regional Arts Fund will enable more support, better outcomes and stronger communities across Australia. While funding has decreased in recent years, the demand for funding has increased with the number of unsuccessful funding applications for high quality cultural projects approaching 70% in various jurisdictions around Australia. About the campaign, Regional Arts Australia’s Executive Director Ros Abercrombie commented, ‘Regional Arts Australia is proud to be advocating for regional, remote and rural artists and arts organisations nationally. Every day, we see the enormous impact that the Regional Arts Fund has on communities and individuals, and we believe that more artists and arts organisations deserve these opportunities’. A substantial increase in funds would facilitate an expansion of the RAF program with financial support, professional networks and institutional connections across art forms, creative industries and geographic locations. Country Arts WA’s Executive Director Paul MacPhail says, "The Regional Arts Fund helps our regional artists and organisations deliver a range of world-class arts activities and events right across our State – yet we continue to receive many more worthy applications than we can support. An increase in the RAF will assist us to address this unmet need and increase the connectivity and creativity of regional Western Australia. I urge everyone to jump on the RAA website and have your voice heard!” Regional Arts Australia is calling on the public to support their campaign in various ways in the lead up to the fed-eral election. More information can be found on their website: https:/ regionalarts.com.au/regional-arts-fund/vote-1-regional-arts
