Leading this mission to India, together with Deputy DG Foreign Economic Relations (DG BEB) Marten van den Berg, is a great pleasure. I am proud to introduce a Dutch business delegation representing expertise and know-how in various sectors, including agri-food and life sciences & health. In these sectors, Dutch businesses are looking forward to establish valuable partnerships with Indian counterparts.

The importance of the relations between The Netherlands and India is underlined and confirmed with the economic ties. We are one of India’s five largest trading partners, and the trade volume has more than tripled in the past decade to approximately 6 billion euro in 2013. This strong increase is indicative of the future potential to further broaden and strengthen our economic links.

The high economic growth in India is driven by its strong economic fundamentals: high saving and investment rates, rapid growth of the population and workforce, a quickly expanding middle class and a shift from low-productivity agriculture to higher-productivity manufacturing.

The Dutch agricultural sector and our top-class healthcare system will present itself during this economic mission in order to foster these strong economic fundamentals.

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs contributes to business development by organising regular economic missions. The principles of corporate social responsibility (CSR) are a crucial component of these efforts. On this occasion our focus will be on New Delhi and Mumbai. I am convinced that our mission will have important added value for all the participants. Some are already operating successfully in India, while others are considering entering this exciting market. This visit provides an excellent opportunity to assist our companies in doing business with India. Furthermore, it is a chance for me to meet with my Indian colleagues and discuss our countries’ bilateral relations.

I have every confidence that the Dutch business delegation will acquire a host of new networks and business contacts in India.

I look forward to a successful and enjoyable mission,

Introducing the Netherlands

A country that was in need of more land for agriculture… Where land was reclaimed from the sea and kept dry: the famous ‘polders’. A country supposedly too cold to grow certain vegetables and flowers... Where greenhouses were invented as a solution to this problem. Where Dutch farmers now produce 2.5 times more food per acre than EU farmers produce on average… We know food & flowers.

A country that the Dutch created in the delta of three large rivers, flowing into the North Sea… Where two thirds of GDP are earned below sea level… Where there used to be a lake almost two million acres wide where Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is today… Where innovative and daring solutions for water control protect half of the country against the risk of being flooded. It earned us a worldwide reputation… We know water.

A country that is the gateway to Europe… Connecting nearly half a billion consumers in the European hinterland to the world’s producers… Thanks to the world-class Port of Rotterdam, the internationally praised Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, an extensive network of waterways, Europe’s strongest road transport sector and an extensive network of rail links… We know logistics.

A country with an open and cooperative attitude… Whose residents have always felt the need to explore what lies beyond its borders... Where the world’s first multinational corporation originated in the 17th century. A country where, today, more than 80% of people who are 15 years or older speak English… We know international business.

Until recently, aggregate/collective epidemiology models were used extensively to understand the spatio-temporal diffusion of disease through populations. These models can neither capture the complexity of human interactions that serve as a major transmission mechanism for infectious disease, nor provide any causal explanation. It is our intent to apply a stochastic, individual-based disaggregate simulation approach which has been shown to be scalable to large populations.

Modern electronic trace data creates possibilities on which to base dynamic, disaggregate models and theory appropriate for Indian situations. It is our intent to tap into the high penetration of mobile phone usage in India even among the poorest citizens, as a unique source of data on regional population scale mobility patterns. Where feasible our research will also involve fusion of server-side mobile phone data with synergetic data sources.

Service2Fruit is a Dutch-European enterprise having its roots in the agricultural sector. The independent company Service2Fruit provides a global and transparent market place that uses internet technology to allow easy and worldwide access to agricultural products and commodities for all businesses. Since 2011, the year in which we started, Service2Fruit has proven that, contrary to the traditional way of trading in the agricultural sector, it is possible to realise clear, fair and competitive prices for various agricultural products, commodities and related services. In 2013 we started expanding to other (European) countries and up-to-date we have already established local Service2Fruit companies in Belgium and Poland. Since very recently we are exploring Hungary, Austria, Spain, India and Chile to determine in which country we should establish the next local Service2Fruit company.

Besides offering direct internet trading services, Service2Fruit is able to provide worldwide payment and delivery securities and guarantees that allow for a carefree global trading process in order to keep focus on what it is all about: buying and selling the right products for the right price!Product quality is not an issue with us either. Quality on our platform means strict and precise definitions and agreements on what is sold or bought. Being precise is the only way to get certainty on quality: parties obtain what they agreed to deliver to each other.

Our platform is open to all businesses in a country but local involvement is key in our approach. This requires strong and involved local partners. These partners become shareholders in the local Service2Fruit company in their country. We want our local partners to benefit from their efforts when a local Service2Fruit company is established and share in the revenues generated by the local Service2Fruit company in their country.

UNICEF is the driving force that helps build a world where the rights of every child are realized. We have the global authority to influence decision-makers, and the variety of partners at grassroots level to turn the most innovative ideas into reality. That makes us unique among world organizations, and unique among those working with the young. We believe that nurturing and caring for children are the cornerstones of human progress. UNICEF was created with this purpose in mind – to work with others to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child’s path. We believe that we can, together, advance the cause of humanity. We advocate for measures to give children the best start in life, because proper care at the youngest age forms the strongest foundation for a person’s future. UNICEF & CSRThe business sector has an impact on every aspects of society and has huge potential to be either a positive force for reinforcing human rights or have a negative impact on the well-being of people and the environment. UNICEF seeks to shape the CSR and child rights agenda by promoting child rights as a core topic within the business and human rights agenda. Within the UNICEF Strategic Framework for Partnerships and Collaborative Relationships, public-private sector cooperation is deemed as integral to addressing the Millennium Development Goals. UNICEF recognises that partnerships are needed in order to realise children’s rights, and business can play a strong role in helping to advance child rights and help achieve the UNICEF Medium Terms Strategic Plan targets.

WASTE is non-governmental-organisation specialised in creating cleaner and healthier cities, which contribute to alleviating poverty in low and middle income countries. With an extensive track record of improving sanitation in over 34 developing countries for over 30 years, WASTE gained a thorough understanding of all aspects of the sanitation markets and the context. They believe that truly sustainable solutions to developing world problems can only be achieved by taking a business approach, creating opportunities for private sector activity rather than by simply giving hand-outs. To accelerate innovation in sanitation markets ‘SAWI’ (short for Sanitation Window) was established.

SAWI is a social venture that improves sanitation for people in developing countries, by adapting Western technologies and developing viable business models for developing countries. At the moment we offer two services: • Aserviceforgovernments,NGOsorbusinessesindeveloping

countries: Scouting for suitable and scalable Western technologies which can be adapted to meet local sanitation needs.

• AserviceforWesterncompanies:Identifyingnewbusinessopportunities for supplying sanitation technologies in developing countries, and helping them take advantage of these.

FINISH (Financial INclusion Improves Sanitation and Health) is implemented since 2009 by an Indian-Dutch consortium comprising banks, insurance companies, NGOs and academic and government institutions from the two countries. Under FINISH, life and health micro-insurance packages and credits are implemented to give incentives to households for their investment towards toilets. Nowadays, the FINISH is responsible for a toilet being build every 3 seconds, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year!

We are scooting for Dutch and Indian SME’s, holding innovative technologies in the agricultural food processing or health sector, who are interested in doing business together in India. Our focus is on technologies which could improve sanitation- or solid-waste-management situations in (peri)-urban India.
