Jesus’ response suggests that worship is of a supreme importance. In fact, it may well be the most important thing we do. In the words of Karl Barth, a 20th Century theologian, “Christian worship is the most momentous, the most urgent, the most glorious action that can take place in human life.” Worship then, is not to be taken lightly. It is not a time for just sitting and receiving. And it is not about what, but Who. It is an intentional, conscious act of giving—an offering of love, adoration, and praise in response to God’s love, presence, and grace. It is both passionate and intensely purposeful. It’s why  we adopted “Open Table” as one of our core values in last year’s re:NEW conversations. And it is clearly the reason your staff and the members of the Worship Committee/Ministry Team  work to make each worship a uniquely, meaningful gift to God. Our intentional design calls the faith community to : Gather for a festival of praise Join in prayer and song Hear and deeply ponder the mystery that is God, in scripture, music, and sermon (a sacrament of word) Celebrate and experience God’s grace in communion. Respond to that grace with gifts of love and resources Depart to share that grace in life, faith, and action. Please know that with this focus, we are hearing your worship concerns and prayerfully working through each. May God bless us as we continue with the most important thing God invites us to do—worship. For most of us the season of Lent brings to mind giving something up - like chocolate! However, this year, we are exploring a Lenten study, “Chocolate for Lent” , that is more than what you give up. Using themes from the film Chocolat, coupled with scriptures, this study creates a space for deeper insights into self-discipline, self-giving, conversion and accepting the stranger. CONNECTION

The Most Important Thing We DoBy Rev. Dr. Jerry Black, Associate Minister

Vol. 4 No. 8 March 1, 2012

It’s Lent and a

focused time

for reflection,

confession,

and renewal;

time to echo

the moments

 Jesus spent in

the wilderness

preparing

for his short, but intense ministry. While

in a state of hunger and focus, Scripture

tells us that the devil met him there in the

wilderness and wanted just one thing:

“All these I will give you, if you will fall

down and worship me.” But the Lord

replied, “You shall worship the Lord your

God and God only shall you serve”(Matt. 4:9,10).

Jesus’ response suggests that worship

is of a supreme importance. In fact, it

may well be the most important thing we

do. In the words of Karl Barth, a 20th

Century theologian, “Christian worship

is the most momentous, the most urgent,

the most glorious action that can take

place in human life.”

Worship then, is not to be taken

lightly. It is not a time for just sitting and

receiving. And it is not about what, but

Who. It is an intentional, conscious act

of giving—an offering of love, adoration,

and praise in response to God’s love,

presence, and grace. It is both passionate

and intensely purposeful. It’s why

we adopted “Open Table” as one of

our core values in last year’s re:NEW

conversations. And it is clearly the

reason your staff and the members of the Worship Committee/Ministry Team

work to make each worship a uniquely,

meaningful gift to God.

Our intentional design calls the faith

community to :

• Gather for a festival of praise

• Join in prayer and song

• Hear and deeply ponder the myste

that is God, in scripture, music, and

sermon (a sacrament of word)

• Celebrate and experience God’s

grace in communion.

• Respond to that grace with gifts of

love and resources

• Depart to share that grace in life,

faith, and action.

Please know that with this focus, we

are hearing your worship concerns and

prayerfully working through each.

May God bless us as we continue w

the most important thing God invites u

to do—worship.

What an incredible experience it was last

summer, to sit together around tables,

sharing good stories, celebrating our gifts

and dreaming of new beginnings! Those

participating in the conversations focusing

on Open Minds, the pursuit of Intentional

Faith Development, recognized not

only the things done well at FCCE,

but also how critical it is to foster faith

development outside of worship.

From the first generation Christiansto our youngest generation today, as

Disciples, we mature in faith by learning

together in community. By studying

together, sharing our experiences and

opening our minds, we let God’s spirit

 work through us.

Through Open Minds, we dreamed of:

• Small Group Studies

• Bible studies for all ages, interests

and faith experiences – Young

 Adult, Couples, Singles, Middle-aged

 Adults, Senior Adults

• Support and maintenance of existing

Sunday School Classes

• Nurturing and training of new Adult

leaders

• New classes designed for new

members and visitors

• Short term topical studies

• Interfaith Development through

discussion and study

• Adult workshops and seminarsSince reNEW, the conversation

has continued among a group of adult

Sunday school leaders. Our discussion

has included the expansion of our

commitment to faith development for

adults, ways to support our existing

classes and add new ones, best practices

in adult education, teacher support, and

the cultivation of new leaders.

Now, it’s time to broaden the

conversation and include you, as we

commit to building an ever-widening

circle of adult faith development ministr

You are invited to join the
