FROM THE RECTOR 2 November 2014 Dear Friends, The feasts of All Saints and All Souls are closely related. On All Saints’ Day we remember and thank God for all the saints who have served him down the ages, especially those unknown or unsung men and women who have glorified God by their witness of faithful lives. We also thank God for those who have influenced us for good in our spiritual lives. We recognise that God calls us to be holy and to glorify him. He calls us to be saints. On All Souls we pray for all the faithful departed, giving thanks to God for them, and commending them into God’s loving mercy. God is the giver of life, and he calls us to eternal life with him. This year it is incredibly exciting once again to be celebrating All Souls not just today but with the Fauré Requiem Mass tomorrow night. Please plan to support our musicians and to make welcome visitors who will come, perhaps to hear the music, perhaps to pray for a loved one. By this holy worship, in company with the saints and angels, we give glory to God. With every blessing, Fr Steven Salmon, Rector

PARISH NEWS Happy Birthday: to Margaret Titchen (6th), Janette Thomas (8th)

Music notes for today’s Family Eucharist: The anthem this morning is a setting of the Nunc Dimittis 'Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace' by the English Renaissance composer Thomas Morley (1557/8 - 1602). Morley's setting contrasts plainsong verses with verses for the choir, known as Faux-bourdons: in these verses the melody is sung by the tenor and harmonised by the other voices. The voluntary is Passacaglia in d minor, BuxWV 161 by the German composer Dietrich Buxtehude (1636 - 1707). The Passacaglia is a series of melodic variations over a fixed bass (also known as a Ground Bass or Chaconne) played in the pedals. This work was hugely influential and possibly served as the inspiration for J. S. Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in c minor which is often seen as not only the last word in ground-bass form, but also one of the finest organ pieces ever written.

All Souls: The special commemoration of all the Departed will be held this Monday 3 November at 7:30pm. Once again the setting will be Fauré’s Requiem. Hear it as it was intended — as a musical and religious event. Please bring a plate for supper after Mass on 3 November.

Adult Baptisms will be celebrated at the 10:00am Eucharist next Sunday 9 November. Please pray for Susie and Alistair as they make this important step. Children’s Disco: St John's Playtime is hosting a Children's Disco on Saturday 15 November, 3:00-5:00pm in the Parish Centre. Bring your children or grandchildren along, ages up to seven years old. Come and enjoy watching them having fun dancing to the music. All welcome. Entry $10 per family for the Organ Fund. Contact Lynette Johnson 0408 254 125 if you need more information. People in our prayers: Roz Peterson writes, “The power of prayer has done a wondrous thing in arresting the growth of my sister, Margaret Baker’s cancer. I had a phone call from her telling me that the cancer has stop growing. She still has to have chemotherapy every three weeks to keep it in check and I am so very thankful for all the prayers from our friends at St John’s, especially when she was diagnosed as having terminal cancer.”

FOUR WEEKS TO THE FÊTE Saturday 22 November 8:00am-2:00pm

COLLECTIBLES AND FINE CHINA: Kathe Swales (9982 7072) is on the lookout for items to stock this stall. Please have a look in your cupboards and ask your neighbours too. She can give you advice about whether what you have is suitable. GIFT STALL: Neridah Byrne (9971 8596) needs NEW articles for her gift stall. Perhaps you have unwanted birthday or Christmas gifts you can donate. She has baskets she can give you to make up a gift basket. CHRISTMAS STALL: Good quality Christmas decorations needed Please keep all these donations and books etc. at home until after the Op Shop on Saturday. However, if you must bring them in, please clearly mark them FÊTE. Remembrance Day  this year falls on Tuesday week. Ex-service personnel of the parish are invited to wear medals next Sunday (9 November), being the closest Sunday.

Call for Volunteers: ACT for Peace, the well-known Christmas Bowl Appeal agency (part of the National Council of Churches in Australia), is calling for friends to become volunteers for speaking occasionally (up to four times a year) in support of their work. Training is provided. For information see details on the noticeboard in the lobby.

Defib-for-Life Program: The Parish Council has accepted the supply and installation of a defibrillator unit, purchased under the St John’s Ambulance “Defib-for-Life” program. Initial briefing on its use has been given; it is proposed to schedule a further briefing in the future so that ministry leaders who have not yet been briefed, and any who are interested in or have familiarity with first aid can acquaint themselves with the operation of the unit. To register interest, please contact the Parish Office over the next two weeks. Please understand that we are not expecting first aiders to be rostered or "on duty" at church services or other events.       Relationships Australia is a not-for-profit Australian organisation providing services on referral for individuals, families and communities, including family dispute resolution (mediation), support and education, and will be meeting again this term at St John’s.

Community Groups at St John’s: Please pray for “Relationships Australia”, “Community Connect”, “Cottage Counselling”, “Street Mission”, and other community groups working to help people who in different ways may be “on the outer”, and for friends, musical events and functions supporting these and other ministries such as Bear Cottage.

Christmas Charity Gifts

With Christmas approaching all too quickly, many parishioners are starting to think of gifts for friends and relations, who seem to have everything they need. It is becoming quite popular now to purchase a gift card from a Charity instead of an actual present. Anglicare has gift cards to help families in crisis and charities like Oxfam and Care Australia also have a wide variety. Act for Peace (one of the missions we support) has this year introduced a brand new gift catalogue called “Gifts For Peace”. There are various priced gifts to choose from, for example: a vegetable garden for farmers in Zimbabwe and Myanmar, School supplies for girls in Afghanistan, food for refugees in Myanmar, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, or health care items for mothers and babies in conflict-affected countries. There are gifts ranging from $10 to $450. Once your order is placed you receive a beautiful greeting card with room for a personal message to send to your recipient. The card also contains a personal story so loved ones can see the difference their gift will make to people whose lives have been torn apart by war. Catalogues are available from the office and need to be returned direct to Act for Peace by 13 December.
